Ohio State Wrestling (2015/2017/2018 B1G Champs, 2015 National Champs, 2019 National Runners-up)

Mendez loses and finishes 6th - fantastic finish for the true fresh, can't wait for what next year brings and invaluable experience here

Romero goes out like a boss, wins his 3rd place match over the #2 Hidlay with a last second takedown in SV

Last match for OSU is tonight with Sasso vs Yianni as Yianni goes for his 4th title and become I believe the 5th ever to do it.

Was having trouble finding a clear summary for tonight, best I found was below;

Lee was up 5-4 and tried for a takedown at the edge of the mat with about 1 minute left in the 3rd. His foot was off the mat and outside the circle before he extended it back to touch the line; the refs were in perfect position and correctly called it out of bounds and the Iowa coaches tossed the brick in. Watching the replay, everybody agreed that it was not a takedown, except for the ref in the video booth, who reversed the decision and made it 7-4, Lee. Reminded me of a ref in Birmingham - yeah, too soon.

The over 2-minute delay seemed to refresh Ramos, who got an escape and then a takedown to tie the match with about 20 seconds left. Then he got himself around both of Lee’s arms and turned him onto his back, getting what would have been 4 points - but they were never awarded cause he improved his position with a few seconds to go and got the fall with 1 second left with the score officially still 7-7, but he had it won without the pin.

Reminiscent of Dan Gable’s loss to Larry Owings in 1970, but that was in the final.

upset

I had Gable in mind specifically on that loss, not identical but just a guy that is maybe one of the greatest wrestlers in college history to not win 4 titles. I did not see that coming at all. Lee seems like a good kid, so I take no pleasure in seeing the loss honestly, though it was intense to watch.

A 4th place at nationals though exceeded my expectations from a team perspective. Does Mendez ever move up to 141 or unlikely?
IMO yes he does, but not the 23-24 season. I think next season will see 127 -Vinny Kilkeary, 133-Nic Bouzakis and 141-Dylan D'Emilio
with Mendez redshirting primarily to build up his body for 141 in 24-25 season. Just my opinion.
BTW, tonight at the Pittsburgh Wrestling Classic Kilkeary won 5-2 over PSU commit Davies and Welch won in OT 3-1 over PSU commit Barr.

For you diehards who have followed longer than I have....have you ever seen a wrestler more talented than Sasso not win a natty while at OSU? That loss to O'Connor in 2021 still hurts.

Sasso is certainly up there...the O'Connor loss sucks because that was his year to do it. He wrestled Yianni really well but that's just a darn near impossible feat to beat him right now. But I would throw Luke Pletcher and Kollin Moore out there, though they had the caveat of not being able to win a title because the Tourney was cancelled...I was pretty confident one of them would win it and really for both. Then Bo Jordan, Joey McKenna, Lance Palmer (probably Palmer is my pick in that category), and JD Bergman. List was longer than I expected, lots of great wrestlers without titles.

4th at NCAA's exceeded my expectations by a mile, our guys did a great job wrestling back in consi's. That is some really nice momentum heading into next year, where I think we have a true shot at a title. Mendez could move up to 141 and is probably more likely to than Bouzakis. I don't see a Mendez RS next year if we have a real shot to win it all, but if it looks unlikely I could see going with D'Emilio and Bouzakis can take the 133 spot (see below).

I definitely see Kilkeary at 125 and frankly he will probably be an improvement. 133 I think Bouzakis is the guy, with Mendez wrestling 141 if we can win the team title...if not, then D'Emilio wrestles 141 and he is an AA, and I have always been a fan of his with how hard and aggressive he wrestles. 149 I have no idea except maybe incoming frosh Brock Herman, who is highly ranked. 157 will be Paddy most likely and hopefully he is improved. 165 is likely Kharchla. 174 might be Hepner if he can move up (or Kharchla). 184 I am thinking Rocco Welsh, 165-184 is likely a combo of Hepner, Kharchla and Welsh. 197 I really don't know unless we have a transfer. HWT is Feldman without a doubt. Young roster, but should be fun to watch.

I think Sasso may remain at 49 for his final season if he can hold the weight because that weight should be fairly wide open at the national level.
Agree on Paddy but he may go 65 if they do move Kharchla up. Not in favor of that move but I've heard rumors and even some think he may take a red shirt and strengthen that bum knee. Also heard Hoffman still has eligibility IF he wants to use it which would open the door for Welsh
to redshirt. HWT I hope Feldman's neck allows him to train this summer so he can go in the fall cause otherwise it's a "black hole" at HWT.
Maybe Hoffman could go there?

Does Sasso have eligibility left? I see him as a RS Senior, but the COVID year is a variable so I don't know where he sits. I was operating under the assumption that he had no eligibility left. If Sasso wrestles next year, that is a game changer. If he is eligible, he would be the favorite at 149 for sure and would be huge for making a run at a title.

On Hoffman, I also thought he had no eligibility back. If he does, then he is probably 197 and Welsh takes a RS. As to HWT, I had presumed Feldman there but didn't know about the injury. Without Feldman it is likely a black hole, I don't think Hoffman could be competitive at HWT. Lots of time to figure that part out though.

Can't find it now, but I did see on Twitter that Real Woods/Shane Griffith/Sammy Sasso were returning for a 6th season. I haven't seen it confirmed by Sasso/OSU though.
