Ohio State Wrestling (2015/2017/2018 B1G Champs, 2015 National Champs, 2019 National Runners-up)

Saw on You Tube that the scoring system for College Wrestling has been changed quite a bit this off-season. A takedown will now be worth 3 pts.and so will a near fall. Also the {infamous) ankle ride will now be illegal and if it is re-used will be a stalling call. How you guys feel about these ? I assume they will be enforced this coming season but I haven't had time to search into it yet.

I have not reviewed the new rules, but heard about the 3 point takedown. If that summary is accurate, I personally love it. Takedowns are tough to come by and should be rewarded. 3 point near falls for 2-4 swipes is questionable only because the 2 swipes can be very difficult to call and we already increased to 4 points for 5 swipes or more, so maybe that's not needed. But the part I love is taking out the ankle ride, I always though it was textbook stalling and to award a wrestler riding time on that tactic was BS imo.

For better or for worse, you're going to see way more bonus point victories. For us, probably for the worse if we don't get more aggressive...PSU and Iowa will likely be the main beneficiaries in our conference of those changes. That said, I think aggressive wrestling should be rewarded, so we just need to improve on that.

One thing for sure is that these changes would prompt MAJOR changes in the practice room and the coaching along with it. Hopefully Ryan can quickly adapt.

We are of the same mind re: the ankle ride, I expect the next step will be doing away with riding time altogether. The suits want to see more bonus points (as you say) and falls and less riding out the clock. Even Coach Ryan says the sport needs more high scoring to keep the casual fans interested.

Mendez is crushing it at U20, just made the finals and that is a very, very hard thing to do. Bouzakis will have the same shot at 61kg, I like his chances to get to the finals as well though.

I know I'm a broken record, but those two are going to be so fun to watch back to back. I like the future lineup as a whole, but these guys are going to be a murderer's row at 133/141 next season (to add to Sasso at 149 of course). This team should make a run if healthy.

Sonofabitch I just saw this updated on the sports networks. It's hard to imagine why this happened but it's certainly a sketchy part of the campus area. Anything south of Clintonville I'm always head on a swivel and even then I'm never all that comfortable. Hope it wasnt something where they actually knew Sammy and intentionally shot him. Back in the 90's and before that I'm sure, this was the decent or safer area but they have been building up the south. Hell I don't really know if any area is all that safe anymore. :grr:

Just after college me and a couple mates were getting damn good at martial arts... to the point of cocky... Instructor stops class... "Trash dudes don't care about a fair fight.. if it gets out you're good, you'll get a board to the back of your head... or a gun.. and none of you can beat a bullet to the corner"... life lesson .. and maybe germane... prayers for the young man...

Sorry for the language, but this fucking sucks. I hope he is ok and recovers regardless of wrestling obviously. I went to that grocery many times in undergrad and it is definitely sketchy, but no more than any other around the area. That is just a freak incident I would think, that area is not safe at all now. Hope he heals up quick, awful news.

Edit: Just got word he will make a full recovery and there should be no issues wrestling again. Didn't get a timeline but that is great news.

From Flo..
Big news coming out of Iowa...several Iowa wrestlers apparently suspended for the season due to gambling (I assume on sports) and today
the names were released...Tony Cassioppi, Nelson Brands, Abe Assad, and Cobe Siebrecht. All have been suspended for this coming season.
Others receiving partial year suspensions include Cullen Schreiver and Patrick Kennedy. Explains why Brands is throwing a ton of cash at Gable Steveson to get him at Iowa since he's leaving WWE. Cassioppi taking an Olympic redshirt trying to circumvent his punishment and if successful
the others probably join him if legally allowed to.

To me that narrows it down to OSU and PSU for the title, so huge news. If no Sasso, then probably PSU again. But obviously understand if he can't go this year...then again, we attached Haskell Garrett do it some to aplomb.

Probably a topic for another thread, but how can the university not make the campus area somewhat safer? I know they can't control everything and in a big city things happen, plus it can happen anywhere. But when I went there about 50%+ of my time was being worried about my personal safety. Meanwhile all cops cared about was busting underage drinking while students were getting mugged or shot. Not on The Oval or main campus area, but anything one block off High we would always have to walk in big groups to feel safe. I only bring it up because Sammy is a good kid and that shit happens to him just minding his own business, Garrett same deal and was just being a good Samaritan.

Ok, diatribe over. It's just upsetting to see this happen and I think the university can do more to help students in that area, while recognizing they can't outright prevent anything like this happening.
