Ohio State Wrestling (2015/2017/2018 B1G Champs, 2015 National Champs, 2019 National Runners-up)

Valencia got bronze at 92kg with a tech fall, great performance for him. Unfortunately Snyder got teched in quarterfinals (there goes the thought of improving working out at PSU), hopefully he can fight back to medal....needs two wins in repechage to get bronze. To Kyle's credit, the guy from Bahrain that beat him followed it up by beating Sadulaev 9-2 (Russian that Kyle is always going for gold against), so the dude must be a stud or just on fire right now.

Currently USA is up 125 points in first to Iran at 102, so it is locked up because I don't think Iran has anyone left that can score for them unless I am missing someone. Retherford and Taylor both beat Iranians that were favored in the finals, so extra huge performances by both of those guys...they all matter, but that sealed it. Really a dominant performance by the US.

US team wins by 40 points over second place Iran (148-108). To those who don't closely follow international wrestling, that is absolute dominance at the world level. We're in a golden era of US wrestling.

Snyder fought back to take bronze, great for him. That Bahrain dude that beat Snyder smashed his opponent in the finals, so I would expect him to be top 5 P4P overall after that.

Final wrestle offs are today at 7pm at the Covelli Center, admission is free for anyone who wants to see it. Also being broadcasted on B1G+ but after a pretty awful experience with that service last year, I am not getting that subscription again. Below are the matchups listed on the official site.

Surprised Gonzales is at 133, really need him down at 125 or we have nothing there...maybe he wants his shot at Bouzakis and will slide back down before the season starts. 133 - 174 should shake out to be Bouzakis, Mendez, D'Emilio, Paddy, Wilcox/Hepner, and Kharchla. 184 I would think is Shumate but if Gavin Bell is healthy he could make a run. Then 197 will be Hoffman and Feldman at HWT. So I don't see much suspense in the wrestle offs, but you never know.

125 - Brendan McCrone (R-So.) vs. Peyton Fenton (Fr.)
133 - Andre Gonzales (R-So.) vs. No. 9 Nic Bouzakis (R-Fr.)
141 - No. 8 Jesse Mendez (So.) vs. Brandon Cannon (Fr.)
149 - Gavin Brown (R-Fr.) vs. No. 6 Dylan D'Emilio (R-Sr.)
157 - No. 16 Paddy Gallagher (R-So.) vs. TJ Schierl (Fr.)
165 - Issac Wilcox (Sr.) vs. Carter Chase (R-Fr.)
184 - No. 22 Seth Shumate (R-Fr.) vs. Ryder Rogotzke (Fr.)
197 - Mike Misita (R-So.) vs. Luke Geog (R-Fr.)
HWT - Hogan Swenski (R-So.) vs. No. 20 Nick Feldman (R-Fr.)

FLO says Hoffman is dropping to 184 for his final season. Jaggers says the same. I think Hoffman feels he has a better shot
against Shumate than against Geog. Jaggers says Hoffman has already cut weight and with those long arms and legs will
give opponents an unusual look at '84.

That is not surprising to me really, Hoffman never seemed to have the firepower at 197 to get to a takedown in terms of strength. I think he will be more effective at 184.

Thoughts from the Wrestle-Offs ....
Most Dominant Wrestlers...1. Paddy Gallagher. wrestled TJ Schierl ( brother of former Buckeye Fritz Schierl) and threw him around like a
ragdoll. Ref stopped it early in the 2nd.
2. Nick Feldman. Finally got to see Feldman on the mat. Opponent Hogan Swenski was totally overmatched in another match that was stopped early, Nick looks ready to go.
3. D'Emilio also had little trouble with freshman Gavin Brown.
Couple other freshmen that looked good in their matches were Brandon Cannon and Ryder Rogotzke. Cannon gave Mendez all he could handle
for 2 periods and had a chance to pull the upset as did Rogotze against Shumate. Ryder has an unusual style that made it difficult for Seth to ride him but Shumate did get the win. All told the freshman were fairly impressive and soph Gonzalez actually pulled the upset on Nic Bouzakis.

New commitment from Hwt. Carter Neves who recently de-committed from Stanford. He's ranked as #4 Hwt. in
the class of 2024. He visited the Buckeyes recently along with 125# stud Leo Deluca who actually was the only person
to defeat Marcus Blaze in high school. Deluca and Neves are rumored to be pretty good buds and may both end up with
OSU. (from 247 Sports)

like hearing that!

Neves is a really nice pickup, always get a Blair stud when we can, huge pipeline wrestling program every year. He will have plenty of time to develop behind Feldman, he took out the top HWT in the nation last January. Looked Deluca up and he is also a Blair product...need to get him him too, 125 really needs addressed.

I hadn't looked at recruiting or the rankings in a bit, but this year and next we have really gotta make a push even with what happened to Sammy. Looking at Flo's P4P rankings, Penn State has SEVEN of the top 25 overall guys committed and all but one are seniors...that is unreal and frankly going to be difficult for everyone to compete with. Now we do have the #4 overall P4P in Davino at 132, Neves is a big pickup at HWT, Deluca is #23 at 120 (likely 125 in college) if we land him, and Blaze is #7 P4P from Ohio at 126 (likely future 133/141) that we should look good for. There is also Henckel from Blair at 160 if we could get in on him...just sweep the Blair kids and try to stay in the arms race.

I'll put my preseason prediction in another post since this is geared towards recruiting.

Here is my preseason breakdown of the team and where I think we end up, both as a team and individually:

125: McCrone looks like the starter if Gonzales can't get down to 125. If possible without risking health of course, Gonzales needs to get down to 125 or else we won't have a qualifier at this weight.
133: Bouzakis narrowly defeated Gonzales 7-6 according to the official site. @Akron Rick I couldn't watch the match, is that wrong? Kind of a nightmare scenario if Bouzakis lost, we need Gonzales at 125, Bouzakis at 133 and Mendez at 141. If we have that, I like the start to our lineup.
141: Mendez is a stud, he can make a run at the title if he makes that next step. Talent is there to win it from here on out (same goes for Bouzakis btw).
149: D'Emilio is a stud and thankfully can step in here for Sammy more than admirably. I would predict him somewhere between #2-6 on the podium this year with the field he has. Best guess is #3 and that would be a great season.
157: Gallagher I have no clue on...he is immensely talented, but the results so far are all over the place...but obviously super early, so hopefully talent and hard work meet here. Destroyed a decent opponent in wrestle offs and hopefully he is fully healthy. Paddy can fight his way to finals, or not win a match at NCAA's from what I have seen so far. My gut says if he is healthy, then he gets somewhere between #5-8 on the podium.
165: Looks like Wilcox at 165, maybe Hepner (not sure if he is healthy?). He will have a winning record and qualify, likely will not be on the podium.
174: Kharchla is immensely talented and I hope he stays healthy. He will not beat Starocci or Griffith, and there are a few others that would take the perfect match. So I would say somewhere between #3-7, my best guess being #4.
184: Shumate could be a good wrestler here, I think he will turn some heads this year. Kind of reminds me of Kollin Moore really with his style and that he could be an underrated kid that does really well. This year, I see him qualifying and winning 2-3 matches at NCAA's.
197: Hoffman is a complete wildcard that I don't think is going to AA again unless he really steps it up. I see about 3 wins at NCAA's and narrowly missing AA, but I hope he gets back on the podium to finish out. I do think he will take runner-up at B1G's.
HWT: I have been the biggest proponent of Feldman after he committed and still am...he has the goods. Just really tough to forecast a young HWT like that. I will take a bold prediction on the optimistic side and say he takes third at NCAA's. He has the ability to win it though, or possibly not place if the physical development to wrestle as an undersized HWT is not there, so it could go either way.

Overall: Without Sammy as a potential champ, we are probably looking at #4-8 overall team finish unless all of Bouzakis, Mendez, Gallagher, Kharchla, Hoffman and Feldman wrestle to the level they were ranked at coming into our program. That is possible on each front, but every single guy was ranked #1 at their weight coming in and have to compete like that...PSU rarely gets a #1 guy that doesn't win a title. After the Sasso news, I had trouble making a prediction because there are so many variables at just about every weight. Hoping for the best of those variables to work out!

Speaking of Sammy...he showed up at a practice last week to wish the guys well and someone asked him
if he'd be back next season . Don't have the exact quote but in typical Sammy bravado he said something like
"I'll be back next year even if I have to wrestle on my knees".
Yeah I goofed on the Bouzakis match, he did win 7-6 over Gonzales. Last second TD if I recall correctly. I'm pretty sure
both him and Mendez held back a bit to get their work in.
