Well, mine wasn’t a gunshot wound but I spent this summer doing the “learning to walk after severe nerve damage” thing. Still doing it, really. Went from a walker…to a cane…to now moving unassisted.

Sending him positive thoughts - it is possible. I’ve done it myself. It’s a pain in the ass, frustrating and physically and mentally grueling. He has age, athletic ability and a competitive spirit that will do wonders in his recovery.

Hoping for the best out of tragic situation.

Well, that's the opposite of what I was hearing in terms of recovery at first. What a terrible turn. But I guess you don't know at first.

To echo @Bestbuck36, I'm tired of this shit as well. As an alum, I'm getting legit pissed at the university. Turning staples of the campus into admin buildings, not creating a safe environment for students while gouging them at every corner on fees...again, not like the university can be at the Kroger to monitor activity 24/7, but there needs to be a better concerted effort with the CPD and the university to create a safer environment for students. It was sorely lacking when I went there, and it needs to get better for all students. Parents are nervous to send their kids to OSU and that's no joke.

Back to the subject at hand, get better my man Sammy. You didn't deserve this.

I was legit scared to even walk a well lit, well trafficked High St between anywhere south of Clintonville and above the Short North in 1995, and that was even walking with a crew. The main High St drag has been bad for 30 years if you’re in the wrong place/wrong time/after 10pm (cue Jim Tressel). The adjacent alleys are even worse. Knew it was a problem when Obie Stillwell got shot in the buttocks at Faze 2 in 1993 and a distraught Jayson Gwinn died later that night in a car crash right near the Woody.

Same in 2007-2011 really. Get off High very far without friends and you're asking for trouble, North or South Campus. Even with friends, could be dangerous. I had a friend get mugged at like 3 in the afternoon a block off High. Just was walking home.

Problem is you have a kid minding his own business at a grocery right off of a main street and this happens. Haskell, same deal and he tries to help some girl. There's way more instances. Not pretending to know the answer, but we need to do better so students can go to school and/or participate in athletics without fearing for their lives.

Just hope for Sammy that he can heal up and be able to do what he loves again. He's worked so hard.

Agree with all above. Cringe when daughter and her friend go to the Short North for dinner and adult beverages. "Text us when you get home, please" is always our telephone closer. Even when I walked/drove that area, going to the Bier Stube mostly, kept head on a swivel. And that was the seventies. Police forces are simply not manned to cover everywhere at all times. Cost to put a uniform on the street is huge, and cities don't fund police at a high enough officer to population ratio. And that doesn't account for the stupid cities that 'defund police' (I'm looking at you, Chicago, Portland, Minneapolis...). Also hope that Sammy recovers. Hopefully he can regain his very high level athleticism that he had previous to this incident. Nevertheless, glad that he's alive. It does seem like when the police are assigned to 'step up' coverage in a specific area because of the number of reports spikes, that the crime element drifts elsewhere, as into the void elsewhere left by the shifting of police coverages.....

You know how many times I've used the Kroger there? Too many to count. And people want to take away our 2A rights? Fuck that. I'd trade places with Sammy any day if I could but a car jacker would be lying in a pool of his own right now. Sorry to get off on a polarizing subject but I'm mad as hell right now.

Police: 2 teens charged in shooting of Ohio State wrestler Sammy Sasso

Two teenagers were arrested in connection to the shooting of Ohio State wrestler Sammy Sasso nearly three weeks ago, according to the Columbus Division of Police.

Sasso was shot during a carjacking on the evening of Aug. 18. on North High Street near the University District.

Sasso was found in an alley near campus and taken to The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center in serious condition.

According to an incident report from Columbus police, witnesses say the incident started as a carjacking. Sasso stopped and got out of his car along North High Street. That's when two suspects came up to Sasso, pulled out a handgun and demanded his car before shooting him.

The suspects drove away from the scene.

Columbus police confirmed to 10TV's Lacey Crisp that two juveniles, a 15-year-old girl and a 16-year-old boy, were arrested this week.

The 15-year-old suspect is charged with two counts of aggravated robbery and one count each of felonious assault, theft and weapon under disability. The 16-year-old suspect is charged with two counts of aggravated robbery and one count each of felonious assault and theft.

The juveniles are scheduled to appear in court Tuesday afternoon.

Fucking teenagers?!?!? Honestly I'd hang them. There's no excuse for young people like this committing these kinds of crimes. It's not as if they are stealing to provide for their kids or some shit. All over the country this shit is happening, and example needs to be made and it needs to be a hard one. Otherwise, it'll keep on happening. I'm disgusted

Don't fool yourself; they probably won't be tried as an adult, won't go to prison, and will have the felonies expunged from their record after a few years.

As an adult in juvenile court there are five (5) levels of felony charges: felonies of the first, second, third, fourth and fifth degree felonies, all of which carry the possibility of being incarcerated. In Ohio, juvenile felonies of the first and second degree carry the maximum penalty of one (1) year, up to your twenty-first (21st) birthday at the Ohio Department of Youth Services, or ODYS, Felonies of the third, fourth and fifth degree carry the maximum penalty of six (6) months up to your twenty-first (21st) birthday at ODYS. This means that unlike any adult sentence, juvenile commitments are indefinite. A child who is placed at ODYS will come up for review after they have served the minimum period of time. Based on their performance, the underlying crime, and a variety of other factors, a judge can choose whether or not to release the child or to set another review date.
However, if a child is found to be delinquent and to have committed a felony, a jurist does not have to send them to ODYS. Like with misdemeanors, the child can be committed to the detention center for up to ninety (90) days, placed in a less restrictive setting, such as Shelter Care, or even placed on probation or community control.

A juvenile record can be expunged any time after it is sealed. If a person does not apply for expungement after sealing a juvenile record, expungement will occur automatically 5 years after the record was sealed or when the person is 23 years old (whichever happens first).

Dear lord, that is the weakest sentencing standards I have ever seen, even for a juvenile. Out in my neck of the woods, you can't get anything expunged whatsoever and even though you wouldn't try them as an adult, the results will be roughly equivalent.

I get lighter sentencing guidelines on something like a misdemeanor petit theft, DUI, etc for a young kid that made a mistake...but trying to carjack someone and shoot them? I truly hope that is incorrect because that would be a horrible way to prosecute crimes like these in terms of both the sentencing and expungement.

These kids need the hammer dropped on them for this and I would say that on anyone they committed the crime on, not just an OSU athlete. As said above, send a big message. And if that is the biggest message that can be sent, then change legislation in Ohio to allow more appropriate sentencing for violent crimes.

SASSO'S RETURN TO THE MAT. After he was shot on Aug. 18, Ohio State wrestler Sammy Sasso has a "long road ahead" before he returns to the mat, Buckeyes head coach Tom Ryan told WSYX ABC 6 in Columbus on Tuesday.

"He's battling. His family is beside him at every step. (He has a) deep desire to wrestle again. Not this year, but hopefully next. A long road ahead. Mindset is strong and good. ... Once his stomach wounds heal, he will be able to focus on his movement. He’s in good spirits. There were some setbacks, but he’s overcome them. Things can change fast though. ... He met with a few recruits this weekend too in his hospital room. Was really special moment. He told them he washed his hair and cleaned up because he couldn’t wait to be with them. It was really moving. He loves this place.”
A four-time All-American, two-time Big Ten champion and two-time NCAA runner-up at 149 pounds, Sasso was set to wrestle in his final season with the Buckeyes in 2023-24. However, based on Ryan's comment, the Nazareth, Pennsylvania, native will look to complete his decorated collegiate career in 2024-25.

The loss of Sasso deals an incredible blow to Ohio State's Big Ten and NCAA championship hopes, as he was supposed to headline a 10-man roster that returns All-Americans Jesse Mendez (133 pounds), Dylan D'Emilio (141), Carson Kharchla (165) and Gavin Hoffman (197).

Unfortunately, Sasso is now – at least temporarily – in the same category as Malik Heinselman (125), Ethan Smith (174), Kaleb Romero (184) and Tate Orndorff (HWT), who have graduated and moved on from the program after leading the Buckeyes to fourth-place finishes at the Big Ten and NCAA championships last season.

As much as I want Sammy to be able to get back on the mat eventually for his sake since I know he loves the sport, I am just glad he survived and should be able to walk again, and seems to be in good spirits and trying to help the team to the extent possible. He'll always have the support of Buckeye wrestling nation no matter what.

US wrestling team cleaning up at the World Championships so far. David Taylor beats Yaz from Iran (his biggest competitor and great wrestler) 9-3, dominant performance...3x World champ, so impressive. Arujau wins 61kg while still in college somehow. Retherford won at 70kg. Mason Paris gets bronze at 125kg. Dake is in the finals and could win it all at 74kg.

Plus we have way more room to earn medals and points, including Kyle Snyder. Great time to be a US wrestling fan, we are stacked.
