Ohio State Wrestling (2015/2017/2018 B1G Champs, 2015 National Champs, 2019 National Runners-up)

Honestly I'm awfully proud with how we wrestled with 3 All Americans out and a key backup at 165. Everyone fought really hard, especially D'Emilio and Paddy who wrestled very close matches to higher ranked guys and lost heartbreakers. D'Emilio I never can quite get, he goes so hard and has excellent technique but can never quite turn the corner. Paddy had his best match of the year and I think should've got the call for danger at the end and won the match. Mendez was on fire and super aggressive, more of that please.

Even though it was Senior Night and our last home dual against a fairly evenly matched opponent, Ryan did the right thing by preserving guys that need to be at their peak for conference and national championships. There's a good reason they didn't wrestle, even though it led to a disappointing result in this dual.

Spartan Classic today

#4 Cornell vs #6 Ohio State @ 1PM

125 #21 Brett Ungar (14-10) #10 Malik Heinselman (19-4)
133 #3 Vito Arujau (14-1) #8 Jesse Melendez (13-2)
141 #17 Vince Cornella (16-4) or Ethan Fernandez (9-3) #19 Dylan Emilio (12-9)
149 #1 Yianni Diakomihalis (11-1) #3 Sammy Sasso (21-2)
157 Cole Handlovic (8-6) #24 Paddy Gallagher (9-6)
165 #8 Julian Ramirez (19-3) #12 Carson Kharchla (9-3)
174 #4 Chris Foca (21-1) #5 Ethan Smith (15-5)
184 Ethan Hatcher (1-7) #5 Kaleb Romero (19-4)
197 #15 Jacob Cardenas (11-3) #18 Gavin Hoffman (15-5)
285 #28 Brendan Furman (6-5) #17 Tate Orndorff (10-5)

Obviously 149 is the main event, but excited to see how Jesse holds up
Potentially 8 ranked matchups, should be a fun one....I have no idea what to expect, but this seems like a damn good Cornell squad.

If someone was able to watch today's match on FLO and wants to post their observations I would like to read them.
What I'm putting on here I did not watch but am paraphrasing from someone on the Bucknuts website. For me personally I love Ohio State Wrestling but am not about to fork over what FLO demands to watch it. Anyway here is basically what happened...

141 ... Match started at this weight I assume because there was a substantial buzz around 133 so they held it for last.
D'Emilio on the strength of 2 tds beat Fernandez 6-1.
149 ... Sasso vs.Sal Jones as Yianni took the day off. It was Sammy taking him down and letting him loose and taking him down, etc. until Jones
pulled his hammy and had to default.
157 ... Paddy Gallagher for most improved wrestler!! He dominated Handlovic winning a 14-6 major decision.
165 ... Klay Reeves filling in for Kharchla made it to the 3rd before succumbing to Ramirez in a tech fall.
174 ... Isaac Wilcox filling in for Ethan Smith against Hansen. Wilcox had knee surgery a couple weeks ago but still was game. He took
Hansen to the wire before being taken down in Sudden Victory.
184 ... Gavin Bell filling in for Kaleb Romero took on Ethan Hatcher and it was a snooze fest until the 3rd period when Bell worked
the cradle for a 4 pt. near fall to go ahead then barely held on to win a 10-9 dec.
197 ... Luke Geog vs. Cardenas. Was not a good day for Big Luke as he fell 7-1 getting taken down and rode out almost the whole
1st and then penalized for stalling in the 2nd. But he did keep from getting majored.
HWT. ..At 16-11 OSU it was still anyone's match and Tater needed to come through which he did with a 3-1 dec.
125 ... Heinselman wrestled a backup and took care of business with a 8-1 dec.
133 ... the match of the day..or so we thought. Vito Arajau had other ideas. Mendez was taken down in the 1st, let Vito escape quickly in the 2nd
and finally escaped late in the 3rd only to be taken down again in a 6-1 loss (with riding time).

So it was a match with bright spots (Paddy, D'Emilio, Gavin Bell) and dark spots ( Wilcox losing in SV, Jones from Cornell injured)
but hey a win to get them ready for the Big Tens.

Bummer to see that many of the big names weren't out there and the big matchups didn't happen - understandable to get healthy for the conference tourney but still a bummer.

Yeah they need to have duals like this earlier in the year, at this point you're trying to avoid injuries with the championships almost here. But a hell of a great win over Cornell even with the guys that didn't wrestle (us included, missing most of our starters from 165 - 197 is tough). Paddy really seems to be coming along, hopefully he is peaking at the right time, he's really fun to watch when he's on. Awesome way to end the dual season.

Geesh the Big10s are going to be insane. I'm watching the B1G Today and they're going class by class and it is going to be war this year. I haven't watched this tournament in a long time but I'll be tuned in this weekend. Got my sports room already set up with multiple screens

Indeed. B1G could end up with national champs at 125 (practically guaranteed with Lee), RBY at 133, Woods at 141, Gomez or Sasso at 149 (though it will likely be Yianni), Robb at 157, Starocci at 174 (almost a given), Brooks at 184 (again, almost a given), Dean at 197 (not the favorite, but could very well do it) and probably one of Parris, Kerkvliet or Cassiopi wins at heavy. Plus you are going to have likely over half the podium at almost every weight be B1G guys.

Obviously upsets can happen and not every weight will shake out that way in all likelihood, but the conference is even deeper than usual somehow. At the B1G championships, we may very well not have a champion this year...really the only chance is Sasso and Gomez seems to have his number. Regardless, it should be a very fun tourney to watch.

Onward we march to the B1G Championships in the biggest whore of the state/town known to man (I reserve my filthy language for when it is truly necessary)...going to be a brutally tough field, but what is new right? Anyways, we have the seeding and brackets, but some unfortunate news at 125 (see below):

125: MH is out for the season with an injury...hate to see his career end that way but for the team looking forward to next year, it may be a net positive to have Gonzales get the experience, though the overall team standing at nationals will likely take a hit...though I am like Ricky Bobby, if you aren't first you're last, so lets try to look at the brightside.
133: Mendez with the #2 seed, that is nice. Now make your way to finals and give RBY all he can handle this time...last time Mendez got beat down, but I think he will narrow the gap.
141: D'Emilio at #9...a tad surprised he is that low, though he hasn't had a banner season. I think he will finish much higher than that seed regardless.
149: Sasso at #1, no surprise. Gigantic matchup in the finals likely looming with Gomez, needs to figure him out and beat him this time.
157: Gallagher at...#12...wtf? No idea how he is that low. I didn't expect top 5 or anything but yikes. That is a tall order for that weight but I would say he ends up top 6 when the dust settles, possibly upsets some people to get to semis.
165: Kharchla at #5, that seems fair since he has been out injured for awhile and didn't have the best year. Can't tell you what to expect there, he could win the tourney if healthy, but that "if" is a huge one. Cautiously optimistic.
174: Ethan Smith at #3, that's fair. He won't beat Starocci but beating Labriola in semis is possible. Hoping he does to stay out of Starocci's side of the bracket at nationals until the finals if he can get there.
184: Romero at #2...like it, but a tad surprised since he hasn't wrestled much lately. Obviously I will take it though, and really in terms of talent he is the #2 behind Brooks. Hopefully he gets to the finals and earns a high seed so he can get a good shot to get to the finals.
197: Hoffman at #7...not great, but I do think his AA appearance may be a flash in the pan and I don't see it happening again, particularly since he has not been healthy. Hope I am wrong, that is just my take.
Hwt: Tater at #7 as well. Not expecting much there but he has put out enough surprising results to know a high placing (somewhere above #7 but below #3 given the field) is possible. That said, probably #6 is his cap this year.

In any event, it will be fun to watch. With how good the B1G is in wrestling, it is pretty much the national championship and this year is no exception.

I guess Malik now joins Pletcher and K.Moore as guys who were denied by fate from finishing outstanding seasons too early.

Yeah it's a shame for sure, though I think Pletcher and Moore were likely to win titles in that covid year. Nobody will come close to Lee. Regardless, hate that MH can't finish the season, great kid that was a battler.

Tomorrow is a all day affair on BTN. I'll take it

I thought it was on my DVR and it isn't, a little ticked off on that one. So I am scrolling through brackets and getting caught up. To bring us to present moment from what I can tell:

125: Gonzales got smoked and I doubt qualifies. Didn't expect him to be Malik's equivalent, but it looks like we may need another answer at 125 next year or else that will just be a weak link.
133: Mendez out to the semis with a nice win over Heilman. Byrd got upset by a Minnesota kid, so I would near bet the farm that Mendez will be in the finals against RBY.
141: D'Emilio loses a tough one to Filius, now has Mattin in consi's...really hoping he can pull that one off heading into the tourney even though I believe he is guaranteed a spot with 9 in from the B1G automatically (plus it is scUM, always want to win that one)
149: Sasso with a MD heading into semis, has a tough one with Murin next round. Gotta win that one and hopefully knock off Gomez to get the #2 seed at the Tourney locked up...don't want to see Yianni before finals.
157: Paddy got destroyed by his Iowa guy, such a mixed bag in his first year. Talent is there, but consistency is not close to where it needs to be. He might get in regardless with 10 spots at 157, but needs to win a couple in B1G to build up his resume.
165: Kharchle with a TF to head into quarters, nice. Tough match with Facundo, but one he needs to win and think he will.
174: Ethan with an 11-6 decision, not exactly the performance you would like but I would expect him to win his next match and rematch with Labriola in the semis. Just advance, we know Ethan is legit.
184: Romero had a bye, should beat his guy to get into the semis...I expect him to be in the finals against Brooks if he's truly healthy.
197: Hoffman with a solid 6-3 decision, and a chance for a big win against Allred next...would be a really big win for him since he has missed a bunch of matches due to injury. Getting on the podium previously definitely helps, but getting to the semis would be huge for his seed at NCAA's.
Hwt: Tater won his first match 2-0 and faces an almost assured loss from Kerkvliet in the quarters. But with 9 spots he is in the Tourney and we will see what happens after that.

- Overall a good start, though with a ton of wrestling left.
