Ohio State Wrestling (2015/2017/2018 B1G Champs, 2015 National Champs, 2019 National Runners-up)

#5 Ohio State (9-1, 3-0 in Big 10) at #7 TTUN (8-1, 3-1 in Big 10) on Friday the 27th @ 6pm EST on the BTN.
Here are the "likely" lineups..

125.. #10 Malik Heinselman (or Andre Gonzalez) vs.#20 Jack Medley
133.. #9 Jesse Mendez vs. #12 Dylan Ragusin
141.. #18 Dylan D'Emilio vs. #23 Cole Mattin
149..#3 Sammy Sasso vs.#21 Chance Lamer (or Fidel Mayora)
157..#23 Paddy Gallagher vs.#10 Will Lewan
165..# Carson Kharchla (or Isaac Wilcox) vs.#6 Cameron Amine
174..#8 Ethan Smith vs. Max Maylor (or Joseph Walker)
184..#5 Kaleb Romero vs.#14 Layne Malczewski
197..#21 Gavin Hoffman vs. #14 Cameron Caffey
Hwt..#16 Tate Orndorff vs. Ryan Vasbinder

Smith is expected to go and they need Heinselman and Kharchla too. Looking forward to 133 and 141 for good matches and
also if Sasso and the heavyweights can pile up some bonus points to secure the win!

They certainly did by a final score of 23-15, winning 7 of the 10 matches. Bout time OSU got a win up there!
125... Heinselman returned and the rust was showing in the 1st per. But he got a rd in the 2nd and a reversal in the 3rd to put the Bucks up 3-0.
133...Great match that was 1-1 going into sudden victory when Mendez hit a single leg td on Ragusin for the win.
141... Another nailbiter between D'Emilio and Mattin. Dylan had 3 tds in the match with the last one coming in SV to make it 3 straight decisions.
149... Finally I could exhale as Sasso teched some sub (7tds and a near fall) to win 20-6.
157... The season isn't half over yet but I know who the Most Improved Wrestler is already..It's Paddy Gallagher and yes he lost to highly
Ranked Lewan (6-4 in SV) but he took the fight to the highly ranked Lewan and it took an overturned call at the end of regulation for him to lose in SV.
165...Kharchla vs. the A-A Amine. Another great effort, 1-1 going into SV. Kharchla had what looked like a td on a situation very similar to the one
they gave to Lewan in the 157 match. It was waved off and on the re-start he got caught and pinned. It's OK because him and Paddy are
back and they're gonna make some noise.
174... Smith had 4 tds and a reversal in a 11-6 dec. over Maylor
184... Romero had 3 tds and an escape and all Finesilver could muster was 4 escapes in a 7-4 dec.
197... Hoffman took a workmanlike 5-3 dec overa sub named Rogers.
285... Mason Parris...that's all I need to say ! Poor Hogan Swenski in his 1st varsity match was no match. Final score 23-15 good guys.

“Poor Hogan Swenski” is right! he fought like hell to avoid the pin, but Parris is absurd.

Right back at it tomorrow in the Covelli as MSU comes to grapple. Ipm EST on Big Ten Plus.
Here are the (likely) lineups...

125...#10 Malik Heinselman vs. Tristan Lujan (or Benny Gomez) ...Malik shook off some rust Friday and needs to take another step in
this contest.
133...#9 Jesse Mendez vs.#18 Rayvon Foley...ranking seems kinda low for Foley. Hope Mendez can handle the long, lanky type.
141...#18 Dylan D'Emilio vs. Jordan Hamdan
149...#3 Sammy Sasso vs. Peyton Omania (or Braden Stauffenberg)
157...#23 Paddy Gallagher vs. #13 Chase Saldate...another tough opponent for Paddy. He needs to beat one of these ranked guys.
165...#9 Carson Kharchla (or Isaac Wilcox) vs.Caleb Fish...I'm thinking they may rest Carson, we'll see.
174...#8 Ethan Smith vs. Ceasar Garza
184...#5 Kaleb Romero vs. #14 Layne Malczewski...should be another great matchup.
197...#21 Gavin Hoffman vs. #14 Cameron Caffey... see above
285...#16 Tate Orndorff vs. Ryan Vasbinder.... Tate definitely the favorite here.

I'm closely watching how much energy the guys have after the big win Friday and then traveling home. Looking forward to 133,157, and 184.

Today's results (also known as "easy ones are now over")... Final Score OSU 36 MSU 3

125...Heinselman wrestled a taller opponent which became a recurrent theme through the majority of matches.Big reversal in 3rd to win 3-2.
133...Mendez with a takedown clinic against the veteran Foley with 4 tds and a 10-2 major decision.
141... D'Emilio and Hamdan had a spirited 1st per that ended 0-0. I thought it would be a close one but Dylan hit him with 2 double leg blasts in 2nd and then a fall in 3rd.
149...Sasso bettered D'Emilio with a fall at 4:23 of the 2nd over Omaya.
157...Gallagher was the 1st to wrestle a higher ranked guy and once again gave a good accounting of himself in a 5-4 loss.
165... Kharchla and Fish butted heads 15 seconds in and there was a long delay for concussion protocol but both were ok. Kharchla had a reversal and near fall in the 2nd and took a 7-2 dec.
174...No Ethan Smith again so super-sub Wilcox took down Garza in OT to win it.
184...sometimes when Romero wrestles you need a calculator..7tds,1 4pt. near fall, 1 2pt. near, and 1escape for a 21-6 Tech Fall.
197... Hoffman vs.higher ranked Caffey was a good, tight match that Hoff won when he escaped in the 3rd. 3-2 final score.
HWT...Orndorff vs. Vasbinder, who was a small college Nat.Champ at 197 but probably never wrestled a massive man like Tater who won 6-3 using that heavy chest to ride him out.

Great to see the Buckeyes get a win up north, especially with all of the guys battling and some dominating.

Had a busy weekend and just watched the replay, thank god we got those skunk weasels back on the mat. After the Bengals game yesterday, I need that to cheer me up. What a gutsy performance in a hostile atmosphere for our Buckeyes, beyond impressed with that performance on the road.

My thoughts:

125 - Malik wrestled a really good match and very smart, quality win on the road to get us started.
133 - Mendez also with a really good win against Medley, clutch single leg and quick finish in SV. I think he is right on the point of turning the corner for a tourney run.
141 - Freaking epic shot to win the match before the buzzer for D'Emilio, beautifully done and Mattin is tough. Getting a win like that in the third match was crucial.
149 - Nice win and really liked how physical he was on top. I think of Sasso as more of a finesse wrestler mostly, but lots of brutal bow and arrows and arm bars. More of that please, had his guy whooped.
157 - Paddy looked ready for his breakthrough moment and is so talented, but just didn't pull it off. Hopefully he gets another shot though because I think he will get Lewan next time.
165 - I can't stand any of the Amine wrestlers, super dirty hand fights to the face from neutral and this was no exception...worse than the rest of his family in this match. I think Camerine Amine thought he was in a boxing match. I appreciate an official warning someone and the officiating in this match was very good imo, great really, but Amine was throwing haymakers and should have got dinged. Then he fakes an injury to avoid a takedown, and somehow gets rewarded with a lucky pin. Maybe Harbaugh gave him some advice on how to take something in the face of inevitable defeat. He's the biggest bitch I have ever seen wrestle, he should have lost that match and I will actively root against him in any match he wrestles in...not because he is from scUM, but because of that ridiculous conduct that has no place in the sport.
174 - Another match where a scUM wrestler basically tries to break Smith's knee in a scramble, what the hell kind of shit is either being told by the coaches to the wrestlers, or what are the wrestlers trying to do at that point? Watched the 1:20 mark(ish) and tell me that Maylor didn't intentionally do that. For anyone that knows wrestling, you know that is illegal and was done to avoid another takedown and perhaps to intentionally injure the other wrestler, to wit not ok either way. To make matters worse, it was on the knee of Smith that is wrapped up and obviously hurt... then he tried to pull his knee again literally 30 seconds later but failed despite his best efforts. Maylor won't amount to anything, but add him to my most hated list with Amine for that stunt. And that is not just me, Ryan and the staff were going off on it for good reason. That aside, Smith is hurt and that much was clear...I'm worried he won't even be able to go at the Tourney. His toughness can't be questioned, but he can't put any weight on his leg in critical positions. Hope I am wrong there obviously.
184 - Romero is incredible with his double legs....to the point of a one-trick pony, but he's so good with it I don't care haha. But he also showed a really nice low single to a quick finish that he needs to bring out more often. Proud of Kaleb on that one.
197 - Nice match for Hoffman, he knew the situation and just got the job done. Love it.
HWT - That match never happened I think? Already had the win and no reason to throw out Tate there.

The oddest football to wrestling parallel I have here is the year we played scUM and they came out obviously planning to rip of Dontre Wilson's helmet on the kickoff (leading to Marcus Hall flipping off the stadium), other than it didn't start off in the beginning of the dual. It just came when scUM got desperate and knew they were losing. Hopefully it was just two random wrestlers that are dirty, but back-to-back at that moment deserves review to me. It was in two matches, but that is concerning. But to end on a high note, great job boys! Beat that team up north and with an explanation point.

Re: The 3,700 seat arena will serve as home to seven varsity sports: volleyball, gymnastics, fencing and wrestling. In addition, it will serve as the occasional venue for women’s basketball as well as serving as the host site for local tournaments and camps

Former Buckeye wrestler and 2015 NCAA champ Nate Tomasello has accepted a position at the Cliff Keen RTC in Ann Arbor.
He will wrestle at 61 kg. No word on his position as assistant wrestling coach at his alma mater CVCA.

In other news, former Buckeye wrestler Kollin Moore just won the gold medal at a tournament in Croatia at 92 kg.
With this achievement Kollin is now firmly in the mix for a spot on the USA World Team at 92 kg.

Welp... I shoud've turned it off after Malik pinned his man, but I kept watching . Final score was 29-9 Nits. Heres the post-mortem...
125,,, Dare I say Malik wrestled like a Nittany Lion? Pinned Steen early in the 2nd.
133...Mendez was only down 2-1 half way through rhe match but Bravo-Young was the bigger and stronger wrestler and
gradually wore him down. Jesse could only muster 2 escapes and lost an 8-2 dec.
141...D'Emilio wrestled tough against Bartlett but again it looked like our guys are all wrestling up as they are all outsized. Final was 4- 3 but only because Bartlett gave up a stalling point (Penn St. does this a lot but also gets away with it a lot).
149... Sasso beat Van Ness 6-3 in our last win of the match. Almost had the cradle but couldn't hold it.
157... I keep thinking Paddy is due but tonight sure wasn't the night as Haines had his way 13-2 major dec.
165... Good match. Should've been 1-0 Facunda after 2 but ref called hands to the face (like every wrestler doesn't do it!). Final was 4-1
174...Maybe the best effort of the night by Ethan Smith who lost to the great Starocci 11-5 but scored the 1st td the guy has given up all year.
184... Another good effort by Romero who lost a tight well-wrestled match 3-2. Brooks had tugged on Kaleb's jersey just before the final horn as he tried a last second td but the ref again favored the Nits in spite of tv evidence.
197... 0-0 after 1st, disputed td by Dean in 2nd (recurring theme) that was not changed, and then a late 2nd per. fall for Dean.
HWT... No contest...yeah they wrestled, but believe me it was no contest.

Oh well...on to Northwestern!
