Ohio State Wrestling (2015/2017/2018 B1G Champs, 2015 National Champs, 2019 National Runners-up)

Thought Wilcox did a great job - dominated until late. Tough spot for Shumate - he had been wrestling 184 last time out. Tate was extremely disappointing - still unsure how he was an upgrade from Traub.

He's not an upgrade over Traub is the answer, wish Gastank Gary was still here. Tate can win a big match, hell he was an AA. But he can get lazy and Traub was never that. But agreed on Wilcox, great win. Hope Gallagher shakes the rust off.

Has Stillwater been an elite HS program? I know OK State has a historic program but I didn't know the local HS program was that good.

Not historically, but recently they are. Almost a feeder to OK State now. @Akron Rick pointed out they recruited two Ohio guys to their program that are big time. Outside of Blair and St. Ed's, no staples anymore really...said sadly as a St. Paris Graham alum.

141.. #16 Dylan D'Emilio vs. Devon Britton
149.. #3 Sammy Sasso vs. Anthony White
157.. #21 Paddy Gallagher vs. Andrew Clark
165.. #8 Carson Kharchla OR Isaac Wilcox (IMO it will be Wilcox) vs. Robert Kanniard or Connor O'Neill
174... #8 Ethan Smith vs. Jackson Turley

197.. Gavin Hoffman vs. Billy Janzer

Relatively easy dual win today but now the schedule ramps up the rest of the month with the "3Ms" (Md.,UM,and MSU and then PSU in Feb. Final score today was 27-12 but that included OSU forfeiting 174 " so Eric Smith could rest"! Okay...

184..#5 Kaleb Romero lived up to his ranking with his 2nd straight fall, this one coming when opponent Saldano turned the wrong
direction and found himself on his back late in the 3rd.
197.. Hoffman looked to be in trouble from the jump when Janzer got to his leg but he hopped around the mat for over a minute w/o
giving up a point. He went on to get a couple tds and take an 8-3 dec.
Hwt...Tater totally outclassed opponent O'Donnell with a cradle near fall in the 1st per. and went on to tech him in the 3rd.
125.. Buckeyes got their first loss as sub Andre Gonzalez gave a good effort but lost a 6-4 dec. to #13 Peterson.
133..Good match between #15 Mendez and #14 Heilmann that Mendez won with a td,a reversal, and over 2 min.riding 5-1

141..D'Emilio got a bad break when he got a 3rd period td that would've won it overturned after the Rutgers coach threw out the foam
block. Then he lost in Sudden Victory.
149..Sasso took a 11-2 major over White and is looking like the old Sasso.
157 .. Paddy had a td and 2 escapes to beat Clark. Best news is he looked strong and in shape today.
165..In a battle of subs Wilcox won his 2nd straight 3-2 over O'Neill. Kharchla will be back soon.
174.. there was no match as Coach Ryan felt it was unnecessary to let fans see another match. At least we fans who watched on Big Ten
Plus. I hope there were more JV -type matches for the paying crowd!

Sounds like Romero is wrestling his best lately, hoping he can keep the momentum going soon against a guy like Finesilver.

How does Romero match up against Brooks? Not sure what their history looks like but #184 seems pretty open this year?

Brooks defeated Romero 13-2 in the NCAA quarters in 2021. They did not wrestle in 2022 in the regular season as Rocky Jordan was at 184 at that time.

Yeah Brooks is not getting beat this year barring a miracle. Romero is wrestling very well though, I expect him to be on the podium in March.

Good dual win against a quality team, especially with a forfeit giving up 6 automatic points. Good wins for a lot of guys but especially impressed with Mendez and Paddy...great performances there. Hopefully we peak at the tourney and have some momentum going into next season. At this point I am not really concerned with W's and L's in our dual meets, we have some tough ones coming and I would expect L's against scUM and PSU...that's fine this year, I just want to keep seeing improvement.

The announcers mentioned (either they heard or were guessing) that the Rutgers coach got the match started at 184 because of his belief that the freshman Saldano could handle Romero thus inspiring the others to go above and beyond their talent levels and take the dual.
What a disappointment it must've been when the kid's shoulders hit the mat!

Ohio State (8-0, 2-0 in Big Ten, ranked #7) visiting #23 Maryland on Saturday at 7pm EST. Streamed on Big Ten Plus.
Here are the "likely" lineups..

125.. #9 Malik Heinselman or Andre Gonzalez vs. #18 Braxton Brown
133.. #9 Jesse Mendez vs. Jackson Cockrell or Conner Quinn
141..#18 Dylan D'Emilio vs. Kal Miller
149.. #3 Sammy Sasso vs. #18 Ethen Miller
157.. #22 Paddy Gallagher vs. Michael North
165.. #8 Carson Kharchla or Isaac Wilcox vs. John Martin Best or Lucas Corio
174.. #8 Ethan Smith vs. Dominic Solis
184.. #5 Kaleb Romero vs.Chase Mielnik
197.. #23 Gavin Hoffman vs. #16 Jaxon Smith
285.. #16 Tate Orndorff vs. Jaron Smith

Best match should be at 197. The Md. wrestler was 23-6 last year and is 13-5 this year with a pin over the #11 wrestler at 197. Hopeful that Malik goes at 125 because that also would be a good match.

Buckeyes with another blowout, this time over Maryland 35-6. Some matches followed the script(no, not the WWE-type script!) and some were "different" so read on..
149.. #3 Sasso vs. #18 Miller sounded like a good matchup but Sasso rolled to a 11-1 major and nearly pinned him.
157.. Gallagher again looked like the high school Gallagher with a dominant tech fall in the 2nd period by a 22-5 score. Keep it up Paddy!
165.. Guess who? it's Carson Kharchla who had a workmanlike 7-2 decision over Best.
174.. Match of the night was Wilcox wrestling up 2 weights filling in for Ethan Smith against Solis who is an All-American in Greco-Roman. Match started off slow with 0-0 1st per. and 1-0 Solis after 2nd. Wilcox tied it up and it looked like he got a winning td at the buzzer but Md. coach threw the brick and after a 5 min. deliberation the refs agreed they had erred. So now Coach Ryan throws his brick saying Wilcox had control before the buzzer, and back to the tape they go only to decide in the Terps' favor once again. So on to sudden victory and a pissed Wilcox immediately hit a double leg to finally get his win.
184.. Kaleb Romero had 8 tds and a near fall to beat Mialnik 22-7.
197.. Easy-peezy for Gavin Hoffman as Md. forfeited
285.. Orndorff got a 3rd per. td and stall point to decision Smith 5-2.
125.. Brendan McCrone (?) filled in and wrestled #18 Brandon Brown. For about 2 minutes...then he got pinned.
133..Mendez made up for the Terp pin by getting one of his own over Quinn at 29 sec. of the 1st. This guy is gonna do great things at OSU.
141.. D'Emilio ended festivities with a 6-3 dec.over Miller. Rivalry vs. TTUN up next!

#5 Ohio State (9-1, 3-0 in Big 10) at #7 TTUN (8-1, 3-1 in Big 10) on Friday the 27th @ 6pm EST on the BTN.
Here are the "likely" lineups..

125.. #10 Malik Heinselman (or Andre Gonzalez) vs.#20 Jack Medley
133.. #9 Jesse Mendez vs. #12 Dylan Ragusin
141.. #18 Dylan D'Emilio vs. #23 Cole Mattin
149..#3 Sammy Sasso vs.#21 Chance Lamer (or Fidel Mayora)
157..#23 Paddy Gallagher vs.#10 Will Lewan
165..# Carson Kharchla (or Isaac Wilcox) vs.#6 Cameron Amine
174..#8 Ethan Smith vs. Max Maylor (or Joseph Walker)
184..#5 Kaleb Romero vs.#14 Layne Malczewski
197..#21 Gavin Hoffman vs. #14 Cameron Caffey
Hwt..#16 Tate Orndorff vs. Ryan Vasbinder

Smith is expected to go and they need Heinselman and Kharchla too. Looking forward to 133 and 141 for good matches and
also if Sasso and the heavyweights can pile up some bonus points to secure the win!
Bucks clinch the road win versus TSUN!
They certainly did by a final score of 23-15, winning 7 of the 10 matches. Bout time OSU got a win up there!
125... Heinselman returned and the rust was showing in the 1st per. But he got a rd in the 2nd and a reversal in the 3rd to put the Bucks up 3-0.
133...Great match that was 1-1 going into sudden victory when Mendez hit a single leg td on Ragusin for the win.
141... Another nailbiter between D'Emilio and Mattin. Dylan had 3 tds in the match with the last one coming in SV to make it 3 straight decisions.
149... Finally I could exhale as Sasso teched some sub (7tds and a near fall) to win 20-6.
157... The season isn't half over yet but I know who the Most Improved Wrestler is already..It's Paddy Gallagher and yes he lost to highly
Ranked Lewan (6-4 in SV) but he took the fight to the highly ranked Lewan and it took an overturned call at the end of regulation for him to lose in SV.
165...Kharchla vs. the A-A Amine. Another great effort, 1-1 going into SV. Kharchla had what looked like a td on a situation very similar to the one
they gave to Lewan in the 157 match. It was waved off and on the re-start he got caught and pinned. It's OK because him and Paddy are
back and they're gonna make some noise.
174... Smith had 4 tds and a reversal in a 11-6 dec. over Maylor
184... Romero had 3 tds and an escape and all Finesilver could muster was 4 escapes in a 7-4 dec.
197... Hoffman took a workmanlike 5-3 dec overa sub named Rogers.
285... Mason Parris...that's all I need to say ! Poor Hogan Swenski in his 1st varsity match was no match. Final score 23-15 good guys.
