Game Thread Ohio 14, Ohio State 26 (Sept. 6)

Just got back from the game. Hell of a game played by both teams.

Interesting, I think you mean. No way in hell could that be considered a "good game" by tOSU. If Ohio State had played a good game, it would've been over going into the second quarter.

One more thing, this team came out flat. We won on depth and talent today. And you can bet that Lil' Animal, Boone, Malcom, Marcus, and Robo sure as fuck didn't come back for their senior season to play half assed football. This team is going to be JACKED come next saturday. If we play up to our potential, USC should get the hardest fought game this side of Texas '05. I have a feeling James wasn't fucking around when he talked about coming back, in part, because of the love he feels from the fans. These guys are not going to let us down, they're not going to let EACH OTHER down. Have some faith, and as always, TRUST THE COACHES.

This was the game I thought Troy would be. Team was uninterersted. Wonder how they will play AFTER USC? :(

Troy is much more the giantkiller than OU, which scares me a little bit. However, I'm not too worried. We have a tendency to look ahead more than have letdowns. Although, as much as I think our players do a good job at respecting lesser opponents, I sometimes wonder if the seniors especially don't just think, "Been there, done that, bought the T-shirt. Bring on the W..."

I have a question for a real football guy like LJB, Grad21, or of that ilk. I'm watching OU vs UC game. I notice how often these and other teams get guys wide open. Like the only think near them is grass open. You watch Florida too, and they are good players but Tebow gets to throw a ball to a guy so wide open. What is the difference between these schemes and the Buckeye schemes where our recievers must actually beat a man on every play it seems. Can't we get guys wide open like that? Convince me again that I shouldn't be jealous.

Interesting? No, that's not what I meant. It was a good football game where both defenses came to play. It shows how you can't overlook any team.

Next Saturday night should be an epic fight. Need to get the players healthy. Need Beanie.

Not trying to be a dick, but if tOSU holds USC to 14, would you favorably compare their offense to OU's?

We played horrible today, I think Spielman said it best when he said that we played "down to the competition's level." This is not a knock on how well Ohio played today, as they gave us a very real scare, but if we played like a real #3 team, it would have been another repeat of the YSU game.

I'm not completely scared. I don't believe USC is "chomping at the bit," if their players are anything like their true fans, they'll recognize the talent and depth on Ohio State and not be ready for a steam-roll. I don't believe our play this week will be indicative of our play next week, last year, WV lost to Pitt (for what would have been their chance to secure a spot in the MNC game) and then beat Oklahoma the next week, we had uninspired scares in 2002 before playing a fantastic game against a (IMO) more talented Miami team in the 2003 NC game, you aren't going to be playing at your peak against "cupcake" teams. I'm not a big fan of Lou Holtz in his football analysis, but he seems to be the only member of the ESPN media that realizes this fact. I love how Mark May,

I have three worry spots for the USC game though:
1. Todd Boeckman - his passes were average, but he got happy feet in the pocket again. In the first half especially, it seemed he would think there is some pressure and would run around like an idiot only to get tackled at the line. He's too damn indecisive, he's not a fluid QB that can run. One play in particular, he could have ripped off at least a 5 yard running gain, he sits in the pocket, tucks the ball, takes one step, stutter steps, tries to pump-fake, takes another step and gets sacked from behind. If you're thinking about running, it probably isn't a good idea to stand at the edge of the pocket.

2. Running through the middle. All of Mo Wells big yardage came from running off-tackle, opposite direction of the blitz. When we had to run through the middle, it was only when the OL was beating up on a exhuasted Ohio line that Herron finally had some holes to run through. We aren't going to have this luxury for USC and it really shows how big of a piece Beanie is to our offense.

3. CBs cheating on their coverage, to leave a man wide-open in the zone between the CB and Safety. How many times did we see Boo Jackson escape a would-be sack/loss of yards, throw up a prayer and the only person within 5 yards was their WR? Chekwa especially. We did this in the YSU game and it has to be something we correct before we play USC.

No slants or crossing patterns all day. Very vanilla game plan.

There was one play where they ran a crossing pattern (I think the TEs). However, Boeckman panicked and threw a fade in the corner. If he had waited one more second and looked to the right, one of the TEs was wide open. Not one of the Ohio's 11 D players were near him.

Guys, you have to remember we played uninspired football in the first half and didn't wake up till late in the 3rd. Take away the fumble recovery in the end zone and we win the half 20-0.
I used to live in Omaha and Solich is a good coach. Remember he took Nebbie to a championship game and was part of Osbourne's staff when they won back to back in the '90's. Solich and his staff did a great job scheming this game........
