Game Thread Ohio 14, Ohio State 26 (Sept. 6)

You live to fight another day....plain and simple. Today was a flat, uninspired brand of football. What worried me the most is the fact that our defense seems to be going through the motions. No emotion... Sure, they had some turnovers, but most were gifts. No clear leader has emerged on that side of the ball. JL is a nice talent, but I think he needs to take his game to a new level. He gets caught up too much in traffic, especially for an all American. I want to see more hooting and hollering. Play with an attitude, scare the shit out of the opposing offense.........

On the offensive side of the ball it's pretty apparent who the leader is.....and it was pretty evident that he wasn't playing today.

You will see a completely different team next week, they were looking ahead today. Hats off to OU, they played a clean, efficient game.

Still can't figure out why Tress tried the long ball instead of the first down early in the 4th qtr. Also, why don't we use our 6'5" QB for a sneak on a 4th and 1 situation instead of running a predictable run from the I formation. If Boeckman falls forward he gets almost a yard.

Yikes! I wonder how this dismal performance will affect our ranking? Do you think we will be bumped down, or because we won do you think we remain at number 3?

With the recent rankings, its up in the air. I know majority of the posters would find a #1 USC vs. #3 OSU a prettier match up than #1 USC vs #6 OSU. If Georgia falls today, good change we move to #2 and set up for a blockbuster event ala Michigan/OSU in 2007 or Texas/OSU in 2006.

Where is the nastiness on D? I will sacrifice some athleticism on D if I can get a guy like Schlegal or Nickey. It was very disconcerting seeing Laurinaitis being blocked 7 yards off the line of scrimmage.

Man, I completely agree. This is why I would love to see Campbell be romanced now. Not that I don't like our DL-men, but we need some big, nasty, wide body on the DL in the middle to eat up blockers so that OL-men aren't constantly getting on our LBs.

I'll bet we get bumped down but considering we were picked to win by over 30 pts and were down for over half the game what can we expect?

Should be a good wake up call.

I figured you guys could appreciate this. My girlfriend is in her second year of real Buckeye fandom, since it's her second year here at the university. So, needless to say, she doesn't know the workings of football as well as I, let alone most of you. Some of the basic things that a football newbie picked out during the game:

1. "Mo Wells needs to go on the outside, not up the middle. He's fast and shakey."

2. "Herron should have had the ball [on the 4th and 1] because he does the best in the middle."

3. "Why are we throwing so many passes so short? Their guys are just waiting for short passes."

4. (After Boom led the drive down for the TD) "Herron should stay in, he's really owning right now. What? They took him out? Ugh!"

5. "We're making their QB run a lot, its too bad he's throwing so well." Then the picks started coming.

Just kinda shows how...insightful...the announcers are compared to a 19 year old girl whose football knowledge comes from just growing up with a dad.

My own thoughts though, we didn't make very many adjustments to the game itself. I've always winced when Mo takes a handoff for a dive or a power play. Mo's a good back, but he's a speedy little scatback, not a power guy, and we should never use him as a power back when we have Boom on the sideline. Mo is dynamite in space. And I was getting frustrated with Tressel doing his west-coast style dink-and-dunk plays that just weren't working with Ohio in a man coverage with the corners up. Ohio did a lot of great things to stay in the game, and we certainly did not help ourselves by coming out flat and not even really trying.

That said, hats off to the coaching staff for whatever they told the guys to get them to turn around so fast. I thought for sure after 3 quarters we'd have a real last-minute nailbiter, with Ohio so close in it. But when Herron took over the game, and I mean Boom took that drive OVER, it just took the wind out of Ohio's sails. Beanie was pumped for him, I have a feeling Beanie must have told him, "Look man, we need you to grind out the tough yards and help Todd out." It was almost Beanie-esque.

The defense was tough all game and gave up a heartbreaker of a TD. But that was no surprise after they gave up a couple of tough 3rd down conversions. It looked like after Todd gave up his TD to put OU up 14-6 that the defense went off. They were flying to the ball harder, and while the DL was getting pressure all game, the Animal and Kurt Coleman and especially Jenkins were really playing passionate, angry football. It's no surprise that two of those three are verbal leaders and also leaders by example.

That's what I think will define this team in Los Angeles and beyond. Adversity, it's tough going, but the fiery, passionate leadership from some guys you really do not want to get angry will help us out.
