Official Bengals Draft Thread

I wonder how many of the top players found on Jerry Jones' Drugstore list (cited in the above article) have those red flag issues?

Of that list #37-Brandon Meriweather-gunplay at Da U',
#48 Marcus Thomas-his senior year at FSU was Cheech n' Chongville,
#60 Rufus Alexander-read about a fight in the Bengals article,
#95 Eric Wright-transferred to UNLV from USC b/c of ecstasy-might have been another Trojan DB tho
#200 Ryan Moore-headcase at Da U'-suspeneded for violating team rules
#248 Ramonce Taylor-weed-pounds- w/ the Longhorns

These are the guys I know of off the top of my head, I'm sure there are others that din't get much national publicity.

Good post stx. And you are right on with the last part, I am sure there are many others who make that list for some reason or another. Those are just the public things, it's things like bad teammate, complains a lot (see Odell Therman), argues with coaches (Tab Perry), etc I bet coach Lewis will prefer to avoid.

On the Bengals Web Site

Good read on what we are looking for at the combine.

SLaRon LandryLSU6-0191Long gone before Bengals pick
CBLeon HallMichigan5-10195Could use a fast 40 time to get Ted Ginn?s burn marks off his back
CBDarrelle RevisPittsburgh5-11194Junior who can hit but can he run? How good of a returner?
SReggie NelsonFlorida6-0195One-year wonder or a big Bob Sanders?
SMichael GriffinTexas6-0208A walking turnover machine like Ed Reed?
CBDaymeion HughesCalifornia5-11185Instinctive, great numbers but is a 4.5 guy who bowed out of Sr. Bowl with hamstring pull and needs to run fast
CBTanard JacksonSyracuse5-11190Safety type who can cover and likes to hit. A sleeper first rounder.

My top 10 list (based on team needs, players who should fit our D and this is despite what position they will likely fall in the draft):

1: Laron Landry, S, LSU
2: Alan Branch, DT, Michigan
3: Reggie Nelson, S, Florida
4: Omobi Okoye, DT, Lousiville
5: Gains Adams, DE, Clemson
6: Darrelle Revis, CB, Pitt
7: Jamaal Anderson, DE, Arkansas
8: Aaron Ross, CB, Texas
9: Patrick Willis, ILB, Mississippi
10: Leon Hall, CB, Michigan

IMHO, I'd be estatic if either of the top S or DT fell to us. Any of those 4 would be big upgrades to our run stopping. There seems to be a big gap between 1/2 and 3 or below at both those positions (third ranked are Tank Tylor (DT) and Michael Griffin (S)). With Justin Smith in the fold for another year, I don't see DE as a real need, however if Adams or Anderson dropped to us, that would free us up to persue free agents in 2008. Revis and Ross rate about the same to me, both ahead of Hall despite what the "experts" say. Willis is known for his character as well as being the top LB in the draft.

Great read (after the T.J. stuff) about the draft and Bengals draft trends.

?This organization is at a point where we can still draft the best player,? Bresnahan said. ?But do we have needs? Of course. We have to look at a corner; we have to look at a defensive tackle. We have to look at a linebacker. And to me it could be a safety if he?s the best player.?

. . . . . . .

The Bengals would love a D-tackle in the first round, but is Louisville?s Amobi Okoye too small after playing the Senior Bowl at 287 pounds? And Florida?s Marcus Thomas may be the best one out there, but he has to be off their board.

A little draft talk in this read...

About the possibility of a late round QB. . . .

So others Cincinnati may possibly consider as late-rounders are Matt Gutierrez from Lewis? alma mater of Idaho State, and BYU?s John Beck. NFL.com draft analyst Gil Brandt pegs Stanford?s Trent Edwards as a guy on the rise. ?He?s got Jay Cutler kind of talent,? Brandt said of the Broncos rookie. ?He did a lot of good things on a bad team. He?s got a lot of upside.?

The bulk of the story is about individual Defenders who Coach Lewis says needs to improve thier productions.

Info on Nelson and Hughes

also, more names for the latter rounds.

40 CHECK: With the Bengals maybe looking for a speed running back on the second day of the draft, here are some 40-yard times from Sunday by guys who have been projected to be around there: Hampton?s Alonzo Coleman ran 4.49 seconds, Florida?s DeShawn Wynn 4.48, Arizona?s Chris Henry 4.40, Texas? Ramonce Taylor 4.50.
By the way, the 5-10, 230-pound Wynn is a Cincinnati kid out of Reading High School. His agent, David Canter, who also represents Bengals linebacker Rashad Jeanty, had an extremely tough day at the combine Sunday.

The CW is that Bengals backup safety Kevin Kaesviharn likely joins Brian Simmons in New Orleans, although there was no deal in place late Thursday?

Losing KK would put us in a real pinch. We are going to have to address Safety and MLB in the draft unless we hit a goldmine in FA. We always year draft the most talented player, but I doubt we'll have that luxery. It looks to me like we have 2 very important poistions of need to address.

I usually hate the idea, but this would be a good chance for us to move down in the draft. I'd be happy to have 3 picks in the second round vs. a 1 and 2. The players who fit our needs are better values in round 2 than in round 1 unless someone really slides down to us (like Landry)
