Official Bengals Draft Thread

I haven't read much about any of the top players, but does anyone know if Okoye is related to Christian? I'm not sure if their names are even spelled the same.

I've never heard that he was, but I only saw a couple Louisville games.

Link to Christian Okoye profile

Link to Amobi $$

Doesn't say anything about being Christian's son.

(Edit: Thanks for the info Sandgk)

If they do indeed look at a QB, which I am somewhat skeptical of, I would assume we would be talking 6th or 7th round here. Still a little too early to tell if these guys would go sooner in the draft than that, but possibilities that I wouldn't mind would be Kevin Kolb, John Beck, or even Drew Stanton.

Kiper's Latest Mock $$

This would be a nightmare pick. #18 overall, Leon Hall.

Fans of other teams, insert joke here!

This Mock is basically a worst case for us. All the top DL and DE we've had our eyes on move in front of us including Anderson, Okoye, Tyler, Branch and Johnson. Still on the board and much better selections, DE from Nebraska, Adam Carriker and S from Florida Reggie Nelson (assuming we move Medieu to CB).

Bengals Web Site

Interesting talk in here about franchising Justin Smith. I am not sure if that would change the need for another DE in the draft (I would still expect Justin to be gone by 2008 so I would think DE would still be a need and there is a lot of talent at DE in this draft) and how that would effect a possible switch to the 3-4 and what type player we would need to add.

Marvin Lewis Interview

Coach talks about staying the the 3-4, letting Torry James go, if Deltha and Odell will return, the advantage of resigning own players vs. FA, drafting mostly D (and the old character issues in the draft) and more.

The more I read, the more I seem to think the Bengals are going to bring back Justin Smith and think a long term contract is a possibility.

I don't like the idea of signing Justin Smith long term, especially for the amount of money he will command. We know what we have with him and it hasn't really helped the defense as a whole over the last five years. The Bengals could just as easily sign another defensive end that will over-pursue plays just like he does for half the price. Save the money for other free agents and get some young blood on the line to pair with Geathers.

Just my two cents.....

It seemed to me like JS finally came into his own last season. How much of that was growth and development and how much was contract year motivation? I know he is likely to be one of the most sought after FA in a weak class (after the big salary cap increase last year) should we let him go. But, DE is one of the highest $$ positions to franchise and it seems like there is a lot of talent at DE in the draft. I know Marvin's plan it to sign as many of our own players as possible because it is easier to keep them in the system than introduce FA to the system.

Interesting, I could really see it both ways. I'd hate to bring in another DE that takes 5 years to fully develop when we need all the help on the D side right now. But, it is at a high tag. Good points Bearonu.

Latest McShay Mock $$

Darrelle Revis, DC/RS, Pittsburgh

Interesting choice here. CB is an obvious area of need. And return specialist is another. Fills 2 voids. McShay ranks him as the highest player on the D side of the ball left on the board. Aaron Ross and Adam Carriker are still on the board here also, but as I stated before I doubt DE will be a draft need if they plan on a long-term contract with Mr. Traps (Justin Smith).

Revis would not be a bad choice-I haven't seen him play, but he has to better than Hall...shudder....
At www.nfldraftcountdown.com -my favorite site, they had the Bengals taking Adam Carriker of Nebraska-who could play end in either a 4-3 or a 3-4, and would be a logical replacement for Smith. Carriker is not a hugely dynamic pass rusher, he would probably play on the strong side. Now they have them taking Revis.

My choices

1-Okoye
2-Reggie Nelson-if Williams moves to CB
3-Revis-1st two will probably be gone
4-Tank Tyler
5-Jarvis Moss-if the above 4 are gone, Moss could play DE or OLB in a 3-4

As Bengal fans are no doubt aware, the team tagged Justin Smith as their Franchise Player this year.

One obvious upshot is that Smith now gets a healthy contract near the top of average in league for his position. Another is that Left Guard becomes a priority on the O-line - likely switching to Whitworth.
