Official Bengals Draft Thread

Enquirer's take on DL possibilities. Nothing new on here, but all in a nice, neat package.

Read on Branch

New names at CB (possible 2nd round selection from Kent) and QB (possible free agent signing after the draft).

Bengals.com mock (to 18). Not a bad mock really.

Interview with coach Lewis. He insists we will not draft for need as he doesn't see a situation where any player drafted will be an imediate starter.

Enjoy all,
O1B

P.S. Please, post your opinions, who your draft preferences are for the bengals, trade possibilities, etc. Let's get the Bengals chatter up and going between now and the draft.

Well, if Marvin Lewis has taught me anything, it is to never try and guess who the first round pick might be. It usually seems that the guy we take is the only guy that no mock draft had us taking.

In seriousness, I would like to see Reggie Nelson at 18, and I wouldn't mind Houston there as well. There are inklings as well that Jamaal Anderson could fall that far, and I think he would be hard to pass up on (not to mention that could open the door to a Justin Smith trade).

The dark horse IMO, is Ted Ginn, Jr. Marvin Lewis himself attended his workout, and they could use him to take on the return game and cover for Henry's suspension. It would not surprise me at all and I wouldn't mind that pick as much as other fans might.

Right on the money with the Ginn stuff. It has been floated out there a few times on the tube. I wouldn't mind the pick at all. He could be a threat for years to come and we all love him. Nelson ranks high on my list as well (which I will finalize and post in the days to come). Even beyond Smith I think we are too deep at DE to use our first round selection there (this assumes Frostee Rucker is healthy and ready to play this season and beyond), but he is a top 12 talent who could fall becuase of the extreme depth at the position.

Nfl draft
Bolstering secondary is Bengals' primary concern

Tuesday, April 24, 2007 3:35 AM
By Bill Rabinowitz

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

It took the Bengals 38 years to draft a cornerback with their first-round pick.

Last year, Cincinnati took Johnathan Joseph with the 24th overall pick in the NFL draft.
Nobody should be shocked if the Bengals take another cornerback with the 18th selection Saturday.
Cincinnati treats the draft as if its preferences were classified government information. Marvin Lewis will preside over a news conference today with the goal -- barring an unexpected onset of candor -- of using as few words as possible to say as close to nothing as possible.

Ross could provide return on investment
Bengals draft: Cornerback
BY MARK CURNUTTE | [email protected]

Aaron Ross is dating Sanya Richards, gold medalist in the 4x400 meter relay in the Athens Olympics.
The Texas cornerback, a possible selection by the Bengals with the 18th overall pick Saturday in the NFL Draft, does not shy from the question of who's the better athlete.
"She is," he said in February at the scouting combine.

Bengals might go for safety
Top talent may slip to 18th pick
BY MARK CURNUTTE | [email protected]

The Bengals traditionally don't select safeties early in the NFL Draft.
The organization has placed a premium on cornerbacks - in terms of both draft status and financial commitment.
But with a run on defensive ends and offensive players expected before the Bengals pick at No. 18, a top safety could be available.

Griffin can play safety position and special teams
BY MARK CURNUTTE | [email protected]

Marvin Lewis said it himself Tuesday: The players the Bengals draft throughout the seven rounds Saturday and Sunday will help their cause if they also "light it up on special teams."
The Bengals, who are thin at safety, especially behind their starters, like at least three safeties in the draft.
One is Michael Griffin of Texas, who could be an instant playmaker for a special teams unit poised for an infusion of new talent.

Very interesting read about the Bengals past drafts from the team site. Take the time to read this one.

ESPN once called the Bengals? first draft pick the funniest 15 minutes in TV. But you wonder that while the Bengals have stopped laughing, why does everybody keep using the same lines?
Put the blindfold on and name this team:
It has drafted nine of its 11 projected offensive starters. As many as six or seven draftees could start on defense. In the last five years, during which said team has won a division, maintained a top 10 offense, and is one of five teams without a losing record in the last four years, it has retained the highest amount of drafted players in the NFL on its roster as well as drafting the second fewest that are no longer in the NFL. Told that team is the Cincinnati Bengals of Mike Brown and Marvin Lewis, a board of experts couldn?t hide their surprise. . . .

And coach Lewis says as much.
