Notre Dame (football only discussion)

But, their "friends" at OSHA are most likely going to be hitting ND with a HUGE (as in well into 6 figures) fine. And while they are there to investigate the death OSHA always looks for, and finds, other workplace violations. Most insurance policies do not cover such fines.

I think OSHA announced their investigation within a couple of hours of the tragedy hitting the news.

Jim Tressel on Tuesday afternoon (just hours before the accident at Notre Dame):

"I think we're going to move practice inside today. I worry about the safety of our camera guys up there 50 feet in the air, I'm worried about that."

"You win with people", as Hayes famously coined. People includes everyone involved, and you have to think about everyones safety not just the players. If Jim Tressel, head coach of a Top Ten team that has BCS hopes and a litany of things they need to work on can still think about everyone involved then there's no excuse for any staff not to.

Thor's Hammer needs to be dropped on this insufferably arrogant institution, whether it's state criminal charges, a massive civil suit, a good thorough OSHA enema or a combination of the above, Notre Dame needs to suffer.

They need to be figuratively handcuffed to a NYC police station toilet and plunger raped.

It's strange that the camera guy was filming that day. From what I've heard the team practiced the day before inside. Dunno if they practiced outside because they thought the wind would persist till Saturday and they wanted to prepare for it, who knows. In any case, someone should have made the call to cancel filming or film from a safer location.

This is a little distasteful after an accident like this. Not saying someone shouldn't be punished, but I think the ND family is "suffering" enough after this tragic accident.

It's distasteful that a student died for a dumb reason. I see no problem with talking legal ramifications at this point.

It's distasteful that they put this kid up into a scissors lift rated for 25mph winds in 51 mph winds, and he died....dead. That's distasteful, not expecting that the individual(s) and instution responsible for this deadly lack of judgment be held liable for those actions.

What would be distasteful (and tragic) is if this whole thing is swept under the rug (or bought off) and neither the institution nor any culpable individuals are ever held to answer for their decisions that day.

And by the way, it's not the "Notre Dame family" who's suffering tonight. It's this kid's family--his REAL family who is suffering because key individuals within the Notre Dame family showed grievously bad judgment and sent this kid to his death.

Perhaps, they'll just quietly transfer them to another parish. Wouldn't exactly set a new precedent.

And what about the students he was friends with? The professors that have come to know Sullivan over the last 3 years? I'm not slighting his immediate family here, they're included...I was just saying that theres lots of people affected by this. My cousin wasn't familar with him, but she has friends that were well acquainted and are devastated by this.

As I said, I'm sure someone is going to be punished for this, and they should. Just felt your statement was a little harsh given the timing.

not even close. a kid needlessly died because your institution failed to care for its own. if you think that notre dame has "suffered enough" already, then you clearly don't grasp the gravity of this unfortunate situation.

i'm happy that i am a fan of a program headed by someone who understands that the welfare of those well "beneath" him should be at the fore of his considerations.

They've been that for years so the benefit of the doubt is not forthcoming from me, either. They love to claim to be "different", and they're right, but for the wrong reasons.

To suffer and to be punished are two different things. The statement I had a problem with is that "Notre Dame needs to suffer." As I pointed out in my original post, I feel they are suffering enough, yet someone should be punished. I also had a problem with ORD's statement that follows...but thats beside the point.
