Losing Tate & The Emu is a blow, but I still think Kelly's good for 3-4 more wins than Fat Bastard would have pulled out.

Here Come The Irish........to the gator bowl.

It is clear that there are mixed opinions regarding Kelly. Some are questioning his character and coaching style while others are defending him.

Well, you apologists need to get it out of your system. Once Kelly signs on the dotted line he becomes a first class prick. Defending him after that point is akin to calling Osama Bin Laden a patriot.

We have absolutely no obligation to treat ND football objectively.

Michael Floyd stands a good chance of being #2 next year.

The kid has to stay healthy first :) Very talented though, hopefully an injury free year next year. We'll see how much Kelly will throw the ball with Crist at QB. He moved the ball well against Purdue, but it was Purdue.

Notre Dame Rethinking Its Football Independence - NYTimes.com

Irish Rethinking Football Independence

By PETE THAMEL

Calling the state of college sports the most unstable he has seen in 29 years, Notre Dame Athletic Director Jack Swarbrick said Tuesday that the Irish were considering giving up their football independence.
Although Swarbrick stressed that Notre Dame was "trying like hell" to keep its unique independence, he said the potential for "seismic change" in conference alignments was forcing him to spend 50 percent of his time making sure Notre Dame is prepared.

Swarbrick said that he and Notre Dame?s president, the Rev. John I. Jenkins, have been discussing situations that could affect the university.
"I believe we?re at a point right now where the changes could be relatively small or they could be seismic," Swarbrick said. ?The landscape could look completely different. What I have to do along with Father Jenkins is try and figure out where those pieces are falling and how the landscape is changing."

Notre Dame is the only independent team with an affiliation with the Bowl Championship Series. Most of its other sports are members of the Big East.
Swarbrick said that the decision to look at alternatives, the most likely of which would be joining the Big Ten Conference, stemmed from external factors. He said that the Southeastern Conference and the Big Ten had separated themselves from the other four major conferences - the Pacific-10, Big 12, Big East and Atlantic Coast Conference - because of their lucrative television agreements...

I dunno -- Purdue could be 50 - 50
Michigan is a must win for RR or there will be lynch mobs forming on the Quad.
Michigan State might well depend on how the first two go -- come into East Lansing with confidence and win or come in unsettled and get blown out.
Stanford -- when was the last time Stanford had back to back wins over the Irish? Right. And it ain't gonna happen now.
BC - they're in which conference? Right. Now seriously...
Utah could be interesting and who knows what the situation will be in LA, kinda depends upon wether the NCAA has a pair or needs the LA tv money.

I could see the Irish with 6 wins in as much as there are 3 gimmees on the sked. I could also see them being 11 and 2 and signing Kelly to a ten year contract.

Some good points there. It's really impossible to tell how much impact Kelly will have in the first year. I think long term the change will be positive over Weis. The only thing Weis achieved was ending the bowl streak with a forgettable Hawaii win, and he brought the recruiting level back up. However, he did a horrible job developing the defense as a whole, and the offense was either really good at times or really bad. Heres my guesses:

I'm thinking 8-4/7-5 with losses to USC, Pitt, Boston College, and either Michigan State or Utah. Utah will depend on if Notre Dame is healthy, the offense is executing, and if Utah's defense is going to give up 50+ like they did against TCU. Michigan State has the Irish's number more times than not the last decade, and the same is said for Boston College no matter how they're playing against other opponents.

7-5 is probably a better prediction, although a lot will depend on the health of Floyd, Kyle Rudolpf, Armando Allen, and Dayne Crist. All had injury prone 2009 years, and they'll be the ones driving the offense. I think Crist will do well, despite having playing limited time spelling Jimmy for quarters during the turf toe. Injuries aside, this should be an interesting year as the last few coaches to come to ND have started strong out of the box, and then faltered as time went on. I think Kelly has a better chance to exceed expectations over the last few coaches though because he has been successful at the college level and is known for motivating and developing players.

If you need a good laugh, check out their "defense" from the spring game. I don't think you can legally call that playing football.

Given what we've seen in the Spring, I'm once again looking forward to the Ntre Ame/ Mich1gAAn game.
