Notre Dame (football only discussion)

I still think that the conference should just freeze them out. If they don't want to join the conference, then they should go play some Big East or MAC teams. You'd see them change their tune in about 5 seconds if they stopped getting exceptional treatment that they haven't earned.

Highly placed people at Notre Dame have told me that they would move only if the Big Ten refused to schedule them until they joined the conference. As it is, the Big Ten actually feeds their "we're America's favorite team" by bowing to their "independence".

They are not independent. They need the Big Ten. The Big Ten does not need them. Say all you want about Paterno, but I'm also told that he has sent them that message loud and clear and refused to schedule any more games with them. TSUN, Sparty, and Purdue need to do the same.

The Notre Dame administration get it. It's the fans and their endowments that don't. Sending such a message would bring them down to earth very quickly.

Texas to play Notre Dame in 2015

AUSTIN, Texas (AP)—Texas and Notre Dame have agreed to a four-game series starting in 2015 that brings together two of the most successful and storied programs in college football.

The Longhorns are scheduled to play in South Bend on Sept. 5, 2015. The Fighting Irish are slated to play in Austin on Sept. 3, 2016, and again on Aug. 31, 2019.

The Longhorns return to South Bend on Sept. 12, 2020.

Texas is No. 2 in NCAA history with 845 wins. Notre Dame is third with 837.

They have played 10 times, with the Fighting Irish winning eight. The last time the Longhorns beat Notre Dame was in the 1970 Cotton Bowl. The victory capped off Texas’ national championship season. The Irish and Longhorns last played in 1996 at Austin.

Kelly said when he took the job at ND he would push for reinstating some of the old rivalries like Miami and playing bigger name opponents like they used to. Nice to see they'll play Texas again, although who knows if the team will be competitive by the time they play. For all we know, Notre Dame could have another coach again by the time they play in 2015. Regardless, I think I would rather see them play lousy or mediocre against a tougher opponent than eeking out victories and overtime losses to cupcakes like Syracuse. At least they're supposed to lose to a team like Texas.

I really don't like ND. But when I think forward to Saturday, the thought of Kelly calling routes for Crist throwing to Floyd, Rudolph, etc. against the TSUN defense, one word comes to mind:

...and watching them try to defend "shoelaces" should be equally as fun. It's going to be like watching a pinball machine.

Their defense looked pretty decent against Purdont. I think if Diaco lays off the blitz they should be alright. I think ND only allowed one play of over 16 yards in that game.

Well, at the very least, their DL is a big step up from the mess that UConn threw out there...so that's a start. UConn had pretty good LBs, but they were so out of position most of the time trying to compensate for how their DL was getting mauled that shoelaces just jogged by them. Shoelaces might be even more slight than tater, so if he takes some shots, they're in trouble. Gardner looked lost out there when he came in.

I really dislike the Domers, but I will say this-this is the first time they have had a real defense and running game since Davie was there. Robinson made a killing off of broken plays and if the defense I saw last week is the reak ND defense I dont see them providing enough opportunities for Robinson to go off. And you are correct, he is going yo get killed running the way he does.

FWIW - UCONN lost its defensive coordinator at the end of last year. Georgia stole him and brought him in to coach our secondary in our new 3-4 system. Thus far - he's been pretty good. Scott Lakatos is his name.
