Notre Dame (football only discussion)

Report: Notre Dame Fighting Irish, Miami Hurricanes discuss 2012 football game - ESPN

The Catholics vs. Convicts era is over, but one of the great college football rivalries of the 1980s might be resurrected.
Notre Dame and Miami are in discussions to play at least one game at Soldier Field in Chicago, the Chicago Tribune reported Thursday night.
The contest would be played in 2012, and according to the newspaper's source, the deal hasn't been completed because the schools are trying to work out a series of meetings.
Notre Dame and Miami last played each other in 1990, completing a series of passionate and competitive games.
Lou Holtz and the Fighting Irish beat then-No. 1 Miami 31-30 in October 1988 on the way to the national championship.
The Hurricanes returned the favor in November 1989, routing the No. 1 Irish 27-10 before going on to win their own title.
Notre Dame has played one game at a neutral site every year. This fall, the Irish will face Army at Yankee Stadium.

Damn, didn't see that it was added to the Miami thread until later. Looks like Kelly is standing by his word that he wants to play the more competitive teams and renew some old rivalries, rather than neutral sites against some head scratchers like Washington State. I'm glad its a neutral site though, bad things happened last time the Irish went to Miami, the fans were horrible.

One of my earliest college football memories was beating #1 Miami in '88. Can't stand Jimmy Johnson or Miami, this was enjoyable.

Love Jimmy Johnson getting pissed at the 7 minute mark when the game had already been over essentially. He had a scowl on his face for the rest of the clip.

Thinking about why Notre Dame refuses to join the Big Ten. If they think they're the "America's Team" of college football or they're too good for the Big Ten, let's look at their record against Big Ten opponents, specifically the three they play the most:

Michigan ..... 15-21-1
Michigan St .. 45-27-1
Purdue ....... 53-26-2

While they've done well against MSU and PU (98-53-3), they've been owned by Michigan. Against the other big two teams in the Big Ten:

Ohio State ... 2-3
Penn State ... 9-9-1 (1-1 since PSU joined the Big Ten)

That's 11-12-1, not even a wining record. Combining that with their record against Michigan, they've gone 26-33-4 against the best of the conference (18-25-1 if you only count their record against PSU since PSU joined).

You can see why Notre Dame balks at joining, seeing as they're pretty much guaranteed two conference losses a year as a minimum...

I don't think this has anything to do with Notre Dame thinking they're "too good" for the Big 10 or anyone else. Notre Dame is synonymous with independence...well, in football anyway :wink2: I'm pretty sure alumni would riot if they joined any conference, most ND fans I've talked to want nothing to do with a conference.

If they were to join a conference in football, I'd personally hope they'd join Big 10 and not Big East or anyone else, but conferences aside I like where they're at. If they were to join a conference, no matter where they go theres a chance that one of their old rivalries is unable to be scheduled. Outside the Big 10, Notre Dame plays USC, Boston College, Navy, and Stanford just about every year. While theres been a dinstinct lack of a pulse in most of the Pete Carroll USC games, and Boston College had our number for awhile there, I would hate to lose either of those rivalries. I don't care much for the Navy and Stanford games, but meh, history I guess.

I still think that the conference should just freeze them out. If they don't want to join the conference, then they should go play some Big East or MAC teams. You'd see them change their tune in about 5 seconds if they stopped getting exceptional treatment that they haven't earned.

Scout.com: Report: Boyd to Transfer
Early Enrolled Spencer Boyd will transfer from ND before his freshmen year begins to most likely South FLA due to "Family Issues" and academic problems.
---------------------------------------------------------------------
Notre Dame freshman cornerback Spencer Boyd is expected to transfer from the University, according to a report by Eric Hansen of the South Bend Tribune. Boyd, who enrolled in January with four other freshman to participate in spring practice, based the decision on family reasons.
According to Hansen's report, because Boyd is not presently in good academic standing, he will return to the University for the summer semester (beginning June 20) to improve his grades.
His scholarship will remain active for the summer session.
Notre Dame head coach Brian Kelly had kinds words for Boyd.
?He?s been a good kid,? Kelly told the South Bend Tribune. ?He?s done the right things. He?s worked hard. He fell behind academically and had a lot of personal things going on in his life.
"Unfortunately, all of the things tipped the scale enough to make it difficult for him to stay in South Bend.?
Boyd saw early action on both the punt return team and at wide receiver in the spring session. He settled in at cornerback for the duration of spring practice where he appeared to be in competition with fellow early enrollee Lo Wood and redshirt-freshman cornerback E.J. Banks, for a backup role behind a trio of starting candidates: Darrin Walls, Gary Gray, and Robert Blanton.
Hansen's Tribune report included the University of South Florida as Boyd's likely destination. Boyd has a two-year-old son who lives in southwest Florida.

No it's not.

Notre Dame is synonymous with being Irish, Catholic, arrogant, and overrated. Independence is probably not even top 10 of things that come to mind when people think of Notre Dame.

This.

Unless of course "independence" is Latin for "being an asshole" then it fits. I don't know, I never took Latin.

Neutral site? Chicago is awash in ND. Pick up a Sunday Trib in the fall and look at the college coverage: ND, Illinois, Michigan, NW in that order.
