Mark Dantonio to get new deal

Mark Dantonio has agreed to a new contract with Michigan State, athletic director Mark Hollis confirmed Wednesday night.

The deal will make him one of the three highest-paid coaches in the Big Ten and place his assistants among the three highest-paid staffs in the conference, a source told ESPN's Joe Schad.

Mark Dantonio has a 64-29 record in seven seasons at Michigan State, and his new contract will make him one of the Big Ten's three highest-paid coaches.
Dantonio's salary had been in the bottom third of the conference.

The No. 4 Spartans (13-1) beat No. 5 Stanford 24-20 in the Rose Bowl Game presented by Vizio on New Year's Day, Michigan State's first appearance in the game in 26 seasons.

The 57-year-old Dantonio is 64-29 with Michigan State in seven seasons. And consistent with the stability he has built for the program, Dantonio wanted to keep his entire staff together.

Pat Narduzzi, the 2013 Broyles Award winner as the nation's top assistant coach, withdrew as a head-coaching candidate at Connecticut to remain in East Lansing. He is often credited with helping the Spartans rank among the nation's top five defenses for three straight years. They are ranked No. 1 overall this season.

According to Joe Schad of ESPN.com, Dantonio’s new contract will make him one of the three highest paid coaches in the Big Ten. Ohio State’s Urban Meyer is making a total of $4.6 million this season and his staff receives a total pay adding up to $3.74 million according to the coaching salary database organized by USA Today. Michigan’s Brady Hoke earned $4.15 million and his staff earned $3.07 million. Dantonio was previously reported to be making $1.95 million in total pay at Michigan State, the fourth lowest in the Big Ten. His staff was earning $2.41 million, the fifth highest among Big Ten coaching staff payrolls on record.

Hoke is sure overpaid......

My guess is that Penn State will have to pay really "big bucks" (more than the $3,282,779 they paid O'Brien) too, if they want a "big name" coach and want to be able to keep him more than 2 years.

Is it possible this becomes a mini-10year war?
It has some of the makings... Dantonio was a very successful assistant here, recruits Ohio heavily, in that state up north...
This has the potential to become a major divisional rivalry. Not that I'm suggesting it's going to replace scUM in intensity and hatred, but... that 2nd-to-last regular season game may decide whose going to the faux playoffs for the next 5 years.

Dantonio probably has a better chance to make a run at the title than "big brother" does at this point, despite Michigan having some good recruiting classes. I mean, scUM has only beaten Michigan State 1 time since 2008, and it was a close 10-12 game last year. Thats pretty impressive given the roster differences. There very well could be some B1G Championship repeat appearances from OSU and MSU in the next 10 years. Some of that might depend on Dantonio keeping the staff together, and whether he gets any looks at bigger programs.

We can't see each other in Indianapolis starting next year; since we'll be in the same division. But I expect the regular season game will decide who represents the East Division in Indy for at least the next couple years.

For some reason, I felt inspired to post this quote this morning.

One issue is Meyer's strategy of poaching commitments from other conference schools.

In the two months after being hired by the Buckeyes, Meyer managed to flip several players, including defensive Se'Von Pittman from Michigan State and offensive lineman Kyle Dodson from Wisconsin.

Spartans coach Mark Dantonio, a former Ohio State assistant, wasn't pleased.

"They've got a new coach, and it's different," Dantonio told The Detroit News. "I would say it's pretty unethical, in the end."
