Michigan Coaching Speculation

DaytonBuck;1022423; said:
I can buy the Les Miles basket but if you're AD or any executive worth your salt there should be a contingency plan.

Therein lies the catch....

And what if Schiano was the "plan B"??

There doesn't seem to be much of a selection list, it's ask one guy one day and when he declines, ask another.

They don't even seem to be bothering with interviewing a group of candidates or even anyone in particular.....it's very haphazard and not exactly what you'd expect from "the Leaders and the Best" :roll1:

Somehow I don't think they'll be writing a How To book when describing this hiring process

I agree it's a mess of 2girls1cup proportions. If the AD has known for 3 months Lloyd was done at the end of the season I would think the guy would have gone through back channels and vetted most of this stuff already. In addition to coming up with a list of 5 to 10 people to contact as soon as the season is over.

Rob Oller commentary: Michigan coaching job not the plum it used to be

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

First Les Miles and now Greg Schiano. It's as if the yellow on the Michigan winged helmet has dripped to create egg on the face of the Wolverines football program.
The school that likes to cluck about its rich football history -- NCAA records for most wins (860) and highest winning percentage (.745) -- is in the awkward position of wondering why its lofty reputation isn't enough to get coaches to crawl on their knees to accept the job opening created when Lloyd Carr announced his retirement in November.
Losing out on Miles is one thing. The former Michigan player and coach was a natural choice to succeed Carr, but his decision to remain at Louisiana State isn't shocking. The Southeastern Conference school is the more attractive program, if winning a national championship is the goal. The Tigers played for the title after the 2003 season and face Ohio State on Jan. 7 in New Orleans to decide this season's champion.

ANALYSIS
As UM struggles, questions abound

Saturday, December 08, 2007 Doug Lesmerises

Plain Dealer Reporter
Michigan might well stumble into the best man to lead its football program, but at this point, the final result will look more like an accident than a plan.
When Ohio State fired John Cooper on Jan. 2, 2001, Jim Tressel was introduced as his replacement 16 days later. When Illinois fired Ron Turner in 2004, in 16 days the Illini had Ron Zook. When Nick Saban announced he was leaving LSU on Christmas night 2004, it was eight days until Les Miles hit town. Notre Dame went 13 days between Tyrone Willingham and Charlie Weis in 2004, with a rejection from Urban Meyer thrown in the middle. That's because when Zook was fired by the Gators in October of that year, but finished out the season, Florida named Meyer coach 17 days after its last regular-season game.
In perhaps the most relevant example for Michigan, 11 days after Iowa legend Hayden Fry retired in 1998, the Hawkeyes hired Kirk Ferentz. Some Iowa fans, though, were angry they hadn't snagged Bob Stoops, who went to Oklahoma nine days after the Sooners fired John Blake.

Miles' old U-M teammates are livid with search, Carr
by John Heuser | The Ann Arbor News
Friday December 07, 2007, 9:30 PM
The son of a University of Michigan assistant football coach, Bill Dufek remembers traveling to Pasadena, Calif. for the Rose Bowl as a grade-schooler. Later, both Dufek and his brother Don played at Michigan under Bo Schembechler.

An insurance agent now, Dufek lives in Ann Arbor and follows the Wolverines as closely as ever. This week, Dufek said he's had trouble sleeping because the search for the next Michigan coach has become, in his words, "a debacle extraordinaire."

"It's a public relations fiasco, not being handled well by the people that are in charge, to say the least," Dufek said Friday. "(Michigan athletic director) Bill Martin might know how to build buildings, but he has no feel for running an athletic department."

Dufek spoke within an hour of the breaking news that Rutgers coach Greg Schiano had turned down an offer to succeed 13-year coach Lloyd Carr at Michigan, the latest setback in a rocky week for the search process.

Arrogance plain and simple. This was the first Michigan coaching job opened up to the outside since Bo, and they thought everybody would come begging to take a paycut for the honor of being Tressel's bitch.

If I were the UM president, I would remove Martin from the search immediately, put Lloyd under house arrest for the rest of the month and then quietly fly to Boise and offer Petersen whatever was necessary for him to take the job.

Now, as a Buckeye, I hope they give the job to English. Not only would that be an incredible stroke of luck, from our perspective, but it would completely screw up their next job search and make that position absolutely toxic should English fail and they go looking for a new coach in 3-5 years.

Debord would be my first choice followed by Brady Hoke

What has scUM done to keep no one from decommiting?

English or DeBoard(sp?) I don't really care wich.

They still owe us for the 13 years of Coop and are only just now past the halfway mark. A current scUM assistant pretty much guarantees another 4 years of the same(or worse) and by then it will take at least 2-3 years for a good coach to turn it around.

So to me its 7(Carr) + 4(assistant x) + 2(new coach) = We are all square for Hot Tub John.
