Lou Holtz (Official Thread)

For clarity, I don't believe that Holtz was offered the job but I must have been told by more than 100 people over the years that they didn't like Holtz because he thought he was toi good for Ohio State and turned down the job.

Well, yeah, like if you're standing in front of him without wearing a face shield.

Read the past few pages of the thread. There people yammering about how Lou doesn't want to be a clown on TV He just wants to talk football and hates being in the position he is.

One thing I learned long ago is to judge people by their actions, not their words.

If Lou really didn't want to be a clown prince dancing with Mark May....then he wouldn't be.
If Lou truly just wanted to talk football...then he would have found a different venue where he could.

Either the claims regarding what he 'really' wants are empty air OR he has compromised his principals for a few extra dollars.

The fact that he allows himself to be trotted out as part of lame comedy skits is all that matters. Everything else is [Mark May].

Of course, that is countered by pronouncements about his moral character based upon seeing him at a public speaking engagement.
Look, I've been gracious about it, but you're being obtuse. Those that know the guy know him to be good but you make bullshit statements about his being a whore which clearly is assailing the guys character - all over a fucking ENTERTAINMENT program. This is the kinda shit that folks point to when they say message boards are full of bullshit and venom.

Many people have good paying jobs that leave them feeling a little less than good about what they do... Perfectly honest jobs at that. This may be just one of those situations.

If that makes one a whore, then I guess there's a lot of that going around. It's very few lucky people who get to feel anything more than neutral about what they do all day long.

Yeah, I don't think it had anything to do with Lou thinking he was too good for Ohio State. He can be a loudmouth when he's defending one of his teams, whether it's ND, Ohio State, South Carolina, etc, but he has a pretty humble opinion of himself. I think he genuinely wouldn't have followed Woody if he had been offered the job, but it makes sense that he might follow the next guy. Think about Ped State after Joe was shown the door. They never really embraced Bill O'Brien despite doing fairly well given his circumstances. Obviously that's an extreme example as we're talking about the cultists here, but there was a lot of love for Woody and you're talking about a big change after nearly 3 decades with Woody at the helm. That's an incredibly tough act to follow, especially when you respect the man and previously worked for him.

I suppose Lou probably is whoring himself out to ESPN right now, but I don't think he plays up the character role as bad as Mark May does. I think Lou is fairly genuine with his on-screen persona and his true to life self. Obviously a lot of Gameday is going to be scripted, it's not like Lou and May are really going to differ all that often on certain college football topics, but if they didn't each take opposing viewpoints on a subject then they'd have to scrap the court segment and find some other ham bit to eat up the time. In the end, he's basically too old to coach again, he keeps threatening to retire and ESPN comes back with more money, so he keeps coming back because the scratch is good and he loves football. I'm sure most of us would do the same if we were in his position.

Ulukinatme, we are in agreement. In the post you cite, I was referring to my earlier post saying that he is "remembered" by many Buckeye fans. I thought when I wrote that original post that most people would understand that he took himself out of consideration very early on. I must say, it is a bit egotistical to take oneself out of consideration, but he was widely discussed at the time, so I don't think he was motivated by ego.

Lou Holtz also has steadily defended Ohio State the last decade.
