LB Marcus Freeman (HC Notre Dame, Constant Backtracker)

Shades of Mike Doss - coming back to win a championship.

And we all know how that turned out......:)

Don't ask Jake Long, Bike Hart or Chad Henne how it turned out though...

...which is why it's nice to see that Marcus isn't just coming back for a championship. That's his goal, but not the reason he came back.

Marcus will be mostly done with his Master's program after the fall quarter.

On playing with James Laurinaitis

"I'm a football fan and to have a great player like that is really interesting because it's not so often that you're going to have that. I don't need all the accolades - I'm happy being the sidekick and I want to keep doing a good job."

On flying under the radar

"When you have a player like (James Laurinaitis), opposing teams are going to usually send two players just to make sure he is blocked. I was reading Sports Illustrated yesterday and it said when LSU was getting ready for us they had two No. 33's on their scout team. That helps me out a lot because with so much focus on a guy like that, maybe they aren't concentrating on me so that I can slip in and be unblocked."

On earning his undergraduate degree and beginning his master's degree at Ohio State

"Coming in early helped me a lot. Starting in the winter gave me two extra quarters and in the summer I took 12 hours which helped me complete my undergraduate and gave me an early start on my master's. Now after football season, I think I only have four classes until I finish with my master's.

"You have to have plans for after football and that is something coming in here I didn't have. Coming in here I said "I'm a football player and if I don't have football, I don't know what I am going to do.' Being here for five years now, I know football is not always going to be there and I have a plan and I have other options."

re: 9. Rico McCoy, Jr. Tennessee

That name brings back some old "recruiting memories". Some people thought he was a "lock" for Ohio State.

OSU football: Freeman steps from shadow of Laurinaitis

Friday, August 22, 2008 3:20 AM
By Ken Gordon

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH
Marcus Freeman's jersey number is false advertising. It says No. 1, but how can that be when the Ohio State linebacker isn't even No. 1 at his position?
That honor has and will continue to be held by Freeman's teammate and close friend, James Laurinaitis. Freeman can't compete with Laurinaitis' ready-made story line (son of a former pro wrestler), nickname ("Little Animal") or hardware (Nagurski and Butkus awards).
So jersey number aside, Freeman doesn't fret the lack of publicity.
"You see all the attention that he gets, and rightly so, he deserves it all," Freeman said. "I'm happy just sitting in the background."

From the official site:

Last season, we had so much to prove. This season, we aren?t paying attention to anything anyone is saying about us and how good we should be and stuff like that. We are just going out there and playing our game. This season is about this group of guys and that?s how we look at it

Amen.
