LB Marcus Freeman (HC Notre Dame, Constant Backtracker)

As for Homan, I wish the rest of the team were as productive as him. We have played four games in two games Homan got about 10% of the snaps and about 50% in the other two games. And is still third on the team in tackles and leads in solo tackle what do you want from him?

This is Marcus Freeman's thread, but I will answer your question.

I want LBs who are attacking downhill. Right now, and some of the blame goes to the poor DL play, we have a LB corp making tackles on the second level. Freeman and Homan have both been catching blocks all season so far.

Stats are great but they don't always tell the true story. Some of the best plays a LB will make will never show up in a stat line.

When a kid is all set to go pro, but stays solely to improve his draft status, then you've got a potential problem on you hands. Honestly, I don't blame a kid for looking ahead to the NFL, because that is going to be his career, but when he's playing like his head isn't into the college game any more, then you've got to bench him, at least temporarily.

yup I'd like to see Freeman in a position to succeed here. The problem is YES we do have depth at the LB position but I think it's young depth.

How about this thought??

Laurintius-Spitler-Freeman

I wont' lie I hate James playing middle linebacker. I think he's about 20-25 pounds too light (remember he's like 6'3") and has troubles shedding those big guys inside.
You're right on JL - he's going to be an OLB at the next level anyway, so you might as well move him now. Whether Spitler and Freeman are the answers for MIKE and WILL, I'm not so sure....

Same could be said of Freeman, look slow today from the WLB side too!!! Freeman has never been good in space, as I have said for three year now being on one side of the field or the other does not make you miss tackles. We get it, you're a Homan shill. If you would leave your obvious bias at the door, you'd see that Homan, while having all the tools, hasn't been all that spectacular this year. I agree with Grad. Tackles and stats aren't everything and most definitely DO NOT tell the entire story regarding production.

You are correct it is Freeman's thread. I just think some want to give Freeman a free pass when he plays poorly and yesterday was one of them. The reason our LB's are not attacking is because we have them playing as safety nets instead of playmakers. When you start 8 to 9 yards off the ball and in pass coverage like today, our LB's may be 10 -12 yards down field before they can react to a draw or run play.

If you've read any of the comments, I don't see anyone giving Marcus a free pass. His play has taken a step back.

I think the team needs a Boeckman type shakeup on defense as well. I'm not overly impressed with any of the LB play (weak DL not helping is duely noted). I can't recall seeing an OSU LB corp having such a hard time getting off blocks as we have seen the past 2 years.

Freeman would be a prime candidate to grab some pine and see if it doesn't wake up the rest of the defense imo. They have to do something.

Let's leave Homan out of it then. Come on Freeman has been a starter for three years and still can not make a tackle. Yesterday he looked bad in pass coverage slow at the very least. If you can not see that then you are not looking!! Freeman has been the WLB for about 70% of the snaps this year, the guy is just not getting it done.

Main point is that none of the LB's are coming up and filling gaps. Letting the play come to them instead of going to the play. We need to hit the play at the LOS, not 3 yards downfield.

Exactly. Every starter has been guilty of this so far. I hope Freeman returns to his previous form, for his sake and the team's.

Marcus Freeman: two cultures, one family

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

There were times, in those awkward adolescent years, when having an African-American father and a Korean mother was difficult for Marcus Freeman.
As a middle-school student, he recalled kids teasing him, and his fists would fly.
"Somebody says, 'Shut up, you're Korean,' and you want to fight. That's the first thing you know how to do," said Freeman, now an Ohio State senior linebacker. "As a kid, you don't want to be different."
Then there were the times when he found it easier to avoid embarrassment or confrontation.
"I would be like, 'Hey Dad, will you come with me here instead of Mom?'." he recalled.
But he hid those thoughts well. To this day, his mother, Chong, said she doesn't remember a time when her children (Marcus, 22, and Michael Jr., 24) expressed anything of the sort to her.

Freeman had 3 of the biggest plays on defense...A couple of the only negative plays Wisky had...

He believe he had 2 TFL and 1 sack...The one TFL that came on the reverse they ran about 4 times, he fought off the blocker and tackled the guy for a 5 yard loss...

These are the type of plays we need from him playing him close to the LOS...

The only problem is they are gashing us up the middle and he isn't filling those holes if he is playing outside...

It seemed like Marcus is a little banged up to me. I think the Wiscy game battered and bruise our entire team up. When he is healthy I think Marcus is the best LB on the roster and most NFL types might see that same thing in the next few years. He is a tad small for some teams in the NFL but he'll find a niche somewhere to be sure. As far as the rest of this season goes I hope we use him in all out attack mode where he is the most effective. I hate watching JL blitz right into an OT or G and go nowhere beyond the line of scrimmage. Send Freeman and leave JL and Homan or whoever else to clean up the scraps.
