COLUMBUS When Marcus Freeman decided to return to Ohio State for his senior season, it wasn't to heal his wounds or reshape a legacy after two straight national title losses.

He didn't want to regret not being a Buckeye for one more season.

"A lot of people think you just get to the national championship. Let's face it, the chances of getting back to the national championship are slim, very slim," Freeman said after a recent spring practice. "Being in this college football atmosphere, you never want to leave. You make lifelong friends. College is the (best) time of my life."

But Freeman knows what kind of talent Ohio State returns.

A year ago, Jim Tressel was supposed to be rebuilding. The pieces fell into place, OSU rebuilt and returned to the national title game.

But 2008 is the season most people point toward as being Ohio State's chance to make a title run.

OSU LB on PR
5/19/2008

COLUMBUS, Ohio- At weekly meeting of the Ohio State Chapter of PRSSA, Marcus Freeman enters a room full of anticipated students on Wednesday May 7 to speak of the importance of PR on and off of the field.

Student members had the opportunity to ask questions, and it was no big surprise that the USC game came up.

?We are excited to face a team like USC,? states Freeman. ?They have been very successful throughout their history, much like Ohio State. There are plenty of people out there who remember the battles in the Rose Bowl between these two schools and I am sure this will be the next great chapter.?

ESPN - Checking in with ... Marcus Freeman - Big Ten

Ohio State linebacker Marcus Freeman knows you don't want to see him on Jan. 8 in Miami. OK, maybe in the stands or outside Dolphin Stadium, but not on the field. Freeman has heard all about how nobody North of Cleveland, South of Cincinnati, East of Steubenville or West of Dayton wants to see the Buckeyes back in the national championship game. Too bad. Freeman and his teammates have every intention of disappointing everyone and crashing the party again.
Despite back-to-back losses in the BCS title game, Ohio State returns a stacked team led by Freeman and a host of others who bypassed the NFL draft for one more shot at college football immortality. I caught up with Freeman earlier this week.

A recent column in the Columbus Dispatch suggested you guys should use all this criticism as a badge of honor. Do you see it that way?

Marcus Freeman: I don't think we use it as a chip on our shoulder. We would be fools to say we don't think about it, the way we finished the last two years. But going into this year, it's going to be a new mindset of starting back at zero. I don't think any team can start where they finished. We can't start off at the national championship game. We've got to get ready for Youngstown State and always remember that feeling we had after these last two title games. We'll never forget that feeling.

Quotable
On going into his fifth fall camp ...

"I think a danger with any football team is complacency. To feel like you don't need to go out there and give everything because you have another practice coming in a couple days. We just have to focus and as leaders and seniors. We just have to be able to say this is what matters. This practice right here. This workout right here is what makes us better."

On camp competition ...

"Here at Ohio State, you are going to have competition. If you relax, you will see in the film room that guy behind you is going to be working hard trying to get some playing time. So, that will keep you on your toes."

On Ohio State being "hated" across the country ...

"That is just a sign of succcess. This university has been successful for many years. A lot of people envy that. They might be sick of us in the championship game, but that is what we want. That is what we are expected to do here."

Freeman Makes The Right Choice.............by Bill Greene.

I started hitting Ctrl-C on passages in that article with the intent of pasting them here and commenting on them.

But I would have ended up just copying the whole thing. Do yourself a favor. Read it. (Unless your evanstoncat or some other Buckeye/Tressel hater. If that's the case, this story will seriously conflict with your world-view.)

I had forgotten that he already has his degree. I've got a lot of respect for anyone who graduates in 5 years considering their other demands, but Free did it in the usual 4 and then came back for more. Much respect for those type of fellas.
