HC Ryan Day (2019 B1G Media COY)

Don't roast too hard, just spitballing.

We might be applying old rules and approaches to an entirely new sport. Stanford just brought in Andrew Luck as a GM, and it may be that a GM is exactly what we need. I don't think Day is it, not in his current capacity. Narrow his field of view and hand pick his OC and DC, put a GM over him making personnel decisions and managing him, and maybe it's there. I don't know, I'm just thinking out loud.

General Manager: Urban Meyer? Brett Veach (KC) comes to mind? -- But I think this has to be someone with deep ties to the program. Maybe this is where Ryan Day fits.
Head Coach: Not Ryan Day. What would it take to get Urban back? Would we (or the admin) want him? Few answers here.
Offensive Coordinator: Maybe you stick with Chip Kelly. Maybe you open the wallet and get Ben Johnson (Detroit) or someone else (Bobo)?
Defensive Coordinator: I struggle here, and think you stick with Knowles IF LJ is the issue. Larry Johnson has to go if he's handcuffing Knowles. Else, Steve Spagnuolo (KC)? Jim Schwartz (Cleveland).
Recruiting Coordinator: Brian Hartline

I also think you bring in a distinguished statistician/data analyst (Eric DeCosta type, except more nerd), and someone running quality control oversight (passionate former player).

GM has final decision making authority. HC manages his reports, but the OC, DC, and RC *own* their columns.

Probably stupid (but as stupid as the offensive gameplan today?) Probably in the wrong thread too. My kneejerk reaction is "Day's going to get fired", but if they do that without a rock solid plan, things could get worse. I'm throwing out NFL names who would be unlikely without a big payday (also unlikely), but that's just it; this is all pro ball now.

That's the nice thing about being a rando on a fan forum. You can look at it all in a vacuum and just throw out pie in the sky names. Sure, I'd love to Have Brett Veach as GM, and fucking Ben Johnson and Steve Spagnuolo as our coordinators. Not going to happen, but this is more an exercise in reimagining the structure than it is the people in it.

Data matters. Had Ryan, Chip, or anyone else with decision making authority been paying attention to it today, the offense would have run differently. Instead, we didn't adapt. At all.

It matters to me. It actually remains to be seen whether it matters where it counts, the folks that control the money bags. It will actually be interesting to see what happens, if tOSU makes a deep playoff run. Win a natty and sure, Day's job is safe, but how much faith do you have that he won't turn turtle when the pressure is on in the playoffs.

Either way, even if they win it all this year, I won't be buying a national championship t-shirt.
I’m not going to let this game ruin a national championship year (and sure I don’t think we will but we are talking hypotheticals). I’m not letting those cheaters ruin my enjoyment more than they have for cheating year after year after year. We win a natty , I’m good. I’ll buy the shirt. The hat. Whatever.

Mins you in mid 50s and grew up where the ONLY game that mattered was this one. It’s 2024 and they’ve ruined that and I’m not going to change it. It’s never going to be the same.

Urbs has napalmed his relationship with the admin, so I don’t think he’s an option. I don’t hate your structure at all…I am the wrong person to comment though, because when my home pro team tried such a structure we got Fatboy Slim Holmgren sitting full time in a golf cart, so I’m a little traumatized

I agree with you basic thesis. It’s a new era and we need to apply new ideas.

I categorically reject any structure that has Ryan Day at the top and is in the business of winning big games.

Organizations take on the personality of its leader. This isn’t a guess, it’s a rule like gravity.

A Ryan Day led organization will always find a way to come up short. The Game or another one.

Here’s a mindfuck. Do we lose this game if Billybob O’ballchin is our OC not chip turtle Kelly
Wasn't a fan of the Chip hire (living in OR I saw an awful lot of him). Walking out on UCLA was totally in character and I don't think he has much passion for coaching anymore. Struggling to find any impact he may have had on the offense (that isn't negative).
