HC Ryan Day (2019 B1G Media COY)

Don't roast too hard, just spitballing.

We might be applying old rules and approaches to an entirely new sport. Stanford just brought in Andrew Luck as a GM, and it may be that a GM is exactly what we need. I don't think Day is it, not in his current capacity. Narrow his field of view and hand pick his OC and DC, put a GM over him making personnel decisions and managing him, and maybe it's there. I don't know, I'm just thinking out loud.
Right after the Game ended, I was thinking that Ryan Day would be the perfect GM – players and families love him, he runs a clean program, and he struggles to win big games. Find a young, energetic coach who can turn Day's proven talent into championships. Sounds like a plan to me.

For everyone that wants day fired , who do you legit want to replace him??? His offenses whether you like them or not have always been high scoring groups. He always has immense recruiting classes. Who is going to replace him and be better? I’m really curious because I can’t name on person that we could ACTUALY get that would be worth that mess that comes with it.
Legit don’t know, and it likely will get worse in the short term without him, but today felt like an inflection point: Zero reason to lose in that manner (UM didn’t really do anything but watch OSU commit offensive suicide) and the presser showed a lack of either awareness or accountability or both. Barring a playoff run that shows that this loss snapped something in him in a good way, he has to go. I’d rather OSU be bad than good but chokers.
What if you trip on the sidewalk and your dick accidentally falls into the hottest chick on the planet?
It’s a good day.
Call me crazy, I am, but if we moved on from Day, I’m going Clemson style, and promoting Brian Hartline to HC.

It nearly mirrors what Clemson did except when Dabo was promoted to HC from WR coach, he got some experience at end of year when they fired HC in-season.

Hartline is an Ohio kid, insanely good recruiter, and can absolutely be a CEO style HC while delegating all (3) phases to top notch coordinators.

And truth be told, as close as Brian and Day are, how could Hartline not watch today’s train wreck and think to himself “what the fuck are we doing? Why are we wasting my unit today??”.
Interesting. It could backfire spectacularly, but implosion isn’t really much worse to me than close but no cigar, so I’m not opposed to it.
People concerned about losing players if you move on from Day - does it really matter if Ryan Day is coaching them? He just oversaw the biggest upset in the history of the game. He is NOT the guy. Is there anybody out there that's a sure thing? Nope, but we know Day ain't it.
THIS. Don’t really need John Cooper/Gene Keady-like results with loaded teams. Was hoping Jay Wright might be the better analogy for Day, but that doesn’t seem to be the case.

C'mon, man! Twitter trolls like Acho know that they're going to get this kind of response from the more rabid elements of Buckeye Nation. Don't fall for that shit.
Saw it at the end of Fox’s broadcast. You can read Day’s lips say ‘what happened?’ The man had no clue. Maybe I’m a member of that part of the fan base? But i was certainly pissed off by it. Reading more former players responding on X leads me to believe they are also members of that part of the fanbase. Sorry but Day deserves the heat for the optics of it alone. Even more heat for that Techmo Bowl play calling, too.

I’m not going to let this game ruin a national championship year (and sure I don’t think we will but we are talking hypotheticals). I’m not letting those cheaters ruin my enjoyment more than they have for cheating year after year after year. We win a natty , I’m good. I’ll buy the shirt. The hat. Whatever.

Mins you in mid 50s and grew up where the ONLY game that mattered was this one. It’s 2024 and they’ve ruined that and I’m not going to change it. It’s never going to be the same.

Good for you. Have fun.

2015 MSU

Today

Which game do you have for worst offensive game plan/play calling?

I’m legit torn
No question in my mind today was worse. Zero question. In 2015 we knew Zeke was injured plus the weather was absolutely awful. Legit monsoon like conditions and the OSU running game at the time was pretty reliable.

2024 OSU had a spotty running game even when the OL was healthy, your OL is decimated including and injury your Remington candidate center two weeks before, literally the ONLY matchup SCUM had an advantage at was their two defensive DTs, and your offensive gameplan revolved around repeatedly smashing your face against that strength despite your OL being the weakest unit on the team?

Just absolute buffoonery.

Normally I can understand why Day calls games the way he does except for maybe the 2020 B1G Championship, but today made absolutely ZERO fucking sense. If someone told me Day got paid off, I'd absolutely believe them.

It’s a new era of college football 30 years ago it would be crazy to fire a coach who wins 9-10 games a year but now it’s not it’s beat your rivals and win titles or bust.
I was raised hearing stories about a dude named ole 9-3 Earle who was a pretty great coach in his own right. Ohio State is a different place.

Get a grip? I'm not sure what prompted that response.

I'm not really interested in winning 10 games. I'm a lot more interested in winning national championships. Ryan Day has kept Ohio State in the national championship picture from 2019 to 2024, and the Buckeyes could still easily win the NC this season (primarily due to the competition being less than stellar). I don't know who Ohio State could hire that would get this team over to actually win NCs as opposed to merely being in the hunt. If you have any suggestions, please post them.
- Nick Saban (make an offer .. $20m, $25m .. UM paid $10m for a QB lol .. tell him here's $20m, and here's another $30m for NIL have fun coach & let him say no. Everyone is confident he will, so let him. Start with the best possible candidate.)
- Urban Meyer (I don't really want this one, but, he's out there... and it satisfies the criteria of someone who can get the team over the hump but I think he was losing his magic and he's not the same ruthless UF Meyer)
- Cignetti. Saban tree. Has won at multiple levels and multiple destinations.
- Vrabel. Gets Ohio State. Build a recruiting staff around him, don't make him recruit. Have him be the big dick energy closer, he was very good at recruiting when he was here, but bring him the NIL package and unlimited assistants for recruiting.
- Fickell. Should have stayed in Cinci & it may be a no brainer. Wisconsin crap aside, "trust the coaches", if Tressel trusted him and Urban retained him, he's must not be so retarded as everyone likes to make him out to be. Definitely someone who gets "it". Would likely make us proud.
- Mark Stoops. Ohio guy.
- Jason Candle. Ohio guy.
- Ben Johnson. NFL coordinator.
- Brad Idzik. NFL coordinator.
- K.C. Keeler. Outsider, old, lower division winner.
- Craig Bohl. Outsider, old, lower division winner.

Dan Lanning is bush league to me. He will get what's his.

I am sure there are plenty of people out there that I don't know, I'm just a regular-ass dude, I didn't know Tressel or Day when they were hired either. And I am not saying it's easy and anyone can coach the Buckeyes, but no way Urban randomly found the one and only coach who could coach Ohio State and his name is Ryan Day. There must be another.

All I know is my expectations of an OSU team moving forward are out the window I’m over sports for real. I’m gonna start enjoying the next hopefully 20 years of my life doing things that have little bearing on what some young college kids are doing I their respective sport. The Ohio State stickers, hitch. license plate, camo wrap, and window cling are going to get removed from my truck tomorrow when I sober up! More to life than wasting it in disappointment! I’m not 20 anymore. I’d rather spend quality time doing family things than worrying about a bunch of college kids.
The sun will come up tomorrow, Fren. Definitely don't rip all your shit off drunk lol

Part of why he wouldn’t come here is our vocal fanbase is insane many times.
Is that why all the players left for the NFL and didn't come back? Is that why our best players transferred out and no one transferred in? Is that why we can't keep any good coaches on staff? Makes sense that's why we got Day, all the good coaches don't like our meanie fans.

Not sure how I am supposed to reconcile:

Team is just made up of a bunch of mercenaries here for the money.

We need to hire/cut a fat check to a coach to replace our current one who has one of the highest winning percentages of current coaches, if not the highest.
I don't believe the team is mercenaries. I think that's disrespectful as fuck to be honest. You start to realize how much time, blood, sweat, tears go into all this shit and to act like they are mercenaries and we, the fans, are the real Buckeyes is crazy to me.

What's Days buyout? I bet it's $50m+ --- that money should go to the "mercenaries" who do more for the school and program than any of us do. Unless you are the one writing the fat check, or are a former player, just enjoy the show is how I reconcile it.

Day is the current highest winning percentage I believe amoung active D1 coaches. Unfortunately the team goals aren't "win a high percentage of your games" it's beat UM, win the B1G, and win the NC. Day will be 0/12 after this season on those goals unless we string it together 4 times in a row here.

The Game Used to matter. Technically it doesn’t anymore. If you can win a natty without beating scum , it doesn’t matter. Inside in our souls it matters but in this new age - I’ll take a natty and a loss over no natty and a win. My old school brain had to readjust and that’s just how I see it in 2024 and moving forward. And it’s gross. Yea.
Game matters. Not sure if you're reading the same website as me but the game most definitely matters. Just look at Day...

A trained monkey could coach these Ohio State teams to 10 wins every year with the talent we have. Some of you are giving way too much credit to Day for that
The question is, how much of that talent bolts if Day is gone. Not really advocating for him staying, but people better get used to the idea of completely rebuilding the roster if he's gone. Look how many guys left Bama when Saban retired. ( we got 3 of them)

Flip side: what is being won with all that talent and Day as HC?

Can’t and won’t end you up in the same place.

I blame Urban. He’s the one that promoted Day. Also, give me another lesser name coach from Ohio, just like Tressel. Hell, Tim Goodwin from Marion local would probably do better. Along the lines of small school D7, why do we never recruit from the small schools? Those kids have more heart than the 4/5 stars we have every year. Curtis Enis was from a very, very small school. I know, I went to school with him at Mississinawa Valley. Year in year out, Marion Local keeps winning championships, yet no offers. I literally watched a skinny, lanky white boy from Georgia, number 17, make play after play last night. Don’t tell me no kid from a Marion Lical or Coldwater from the MAC couldn’t play here. Ross Homan did just fine. I’m tired of these overrated football camp players who get these 5 stars simply because they show out at camps. Not every kid can afford these camps. Some need to bake hay and milk cows. Just my 2 cents

I swore after last year's loss that it would take a win this year for me to not join @Jaxbuck on the Ryan's not the guy bus.
Welp, I'm with Jax. No trust on being the man at the helm.
I do not give a fuck about the playoff and NC chase IF there's a loss to tCUN.
I wanted Jax to be wrong. But... he's not wrong.
