HC Ryan Day (2019 B1G Media COY)

Totally true

I just was talking about intangibles for the position that Day may not value as much as Urban

I’ve just been thinking about CJs body language and how I don’t think I’ve ever watched him and thought…well that dude can definitely rally the troops.
Is it CJ or Day? That’s what I don’t know. Is CJ allowed to lead or is Day the leader. You can laugh at JT or Tebow or even Krenzel but they took ownership..Holy Buckeye wasn’t the called play but Craig and Jenkins had the freedom to make that play.

Ryan Day is a REALLY good HC. The problem is, really good isn't enough for many of us Buckeye fans when you cannot win the game that matters the most. Is that fair to some people? No, but when you sign on to play or coach in Columbus, that's how you're judged...that's just the way it is. Again, to me, I just don't think Ryan Day is wired to win The Game or most games against top competition. Unfortunately, I can't just say "fire him" because I do not know who you get that is better. We just have to hope he figures it out, because if he keeps winning 90% of his games overall, he isn't going anywhere unless he takes another job.

Also, I’ll be the rare person that gives Day credit for personnel changes. He has fired and hired improvements at every chance. The idea he’s sitting on his hands is wrong (save Special Teams but that will happen).

He’s a young leader but he has TRIED and is a work in progress. His connections brought in the great Hafley but only for 1 year. Studwara? Gone. Defense? He got rid of beloved Coombs for underperforming.

He somehow got the early disjointed Defense (LJ Sr/Knowles) to get aligned by end of year. The guy has made tough decisions for Ohio State. Our secondary was back to DBU due to his hires. Give him credit.

I truly think Day wants to win badly. He isn’t some ho-hum aw shucks loser. He’s shown the red-ass fire in his belly and the team loves him. He cares a lot.

It doesn’t change the results that well…he has lost. And lost to top top teams.

I think he gets it and it just sucks we’re living through the growing pains. This will be our guy for a long time whether we like it or not.

Maybe things change - or maybe Ohio State history shows…we won’t win NCs, no matter how great the players or coaches.

Cherish ‘02 and ‘14 because it could be a while until it ALL clicks again.

(sports are stupid. Fin)

McCord made a really, really bad play and gave the other team 7 points right from the jump, a hole OSU was trying to dig out of literally the rest of the game and came up just short.

McCord also missed some reads to kill drives throughout the rest of the game. He was a first-year starter, he either gets better as a second-year starter, or someone beats him and the QB position is better next year.

But, otherwise, the offense was moving the ball, scoring points, and playing well enough to win the rest of the game. The play calling on offense was effective outside of McCord’s play in limited situations (I’m specifically thinking of missing a wide open Fleming running a corner route to the end zone).

Day could have been more aggressive at the end of the first half, I get that, but if he fails to get a first down there, there was a real chance UM puts up more points before the half with a few passes.

Hindsight is 20/20 and getting that first down was not a given.

It’s amazing to me how quickly expectations change. How many people were saying this is a 3-4 loss team at the beginning of the year? More than a few. By that metric, Day far exceeded expectations.

Similarly, a microcosm of the instantly changing expectations was in the game, Ohio State was pinned at its own two-yard-line with almost no time left in the first half. Praying to get a first down and not giving up a safety or blocked punt in the end zone was the reasonable expectation there. Instead, McCord makes one of his better plays of the entire game and the expectation instantly flips to getting points before the half, and people thinking Day should be fired because he wasn’t aggressive enough.

I get it. Losing The Game absolutely breaks people’s brains, but there are, in fact, a lot of broken brains here.

It sucks, it absolutely sucks.

Michigan ducked an epic ass beating in 2020 like cowards. That would have made Day 2-0 against ttun.

Day made a horrible DC hire, UM started cheating, the weather was bad, OSU players were sick, and UM was pretty damn good in ‘21.

In ‘22, UM perfected the art of cheating and they had a good QB who has had OSU’s number, OSU’s secondary was decimated by injury, OSU was on its 4th string RB, lost its best player on offense for the season, and the DC was too aggressive.

In ‘23, UM had its best team of a generation, with the experienced QB who had OSU’s number, at home, against an OSU first-year starting QB, Knowles was not aggressive enough, the OSU LB had a robot arm and couldn’t tackle a TE in the open field, the OSU special teams were a mess which left points on the field and utterly failed to pin UM deep when they should have on every punt, the first year starting OSU QB made a game killing mistake early, and OSU still had a legit shot to win at the end of the game.

Call it excuses, whatever. That is what happened. A lot of bad things have lined up against Ohio State for the past four seasons, and talk of being soft, not “getting it,” or whatever is absolute horseshit, in my opinion.

Look at Urban Meyer, who “dominated” the series. OSU won by 5 in ‘12, was fortunate as shit to win in ‘13 with a two-point conversion interception, and again in ‘16 with a 4th down conversion by inches on the game-winning drive. Some bad luck in any of those games and Meyer’s record is practically 50-50, assuming the momentum isn’t completely different in the rest of the games.

Maybe it’s some kind of Ohio magic in there that gets those lucky bounces, but I don’t really think so. Those lucky bounces are about confidence and momentum as much as anything else. Meyer had it and OSU benefited from things going there way.

OSU and Day don’t have it right now, and the bad bounces have stacked up against them.

Next year is lined up exactly opposite to ‘23. UM’s team will be decimated and coming to Columbus with a first-year starting QB. Day HAS to get the momentum back next year, or the narrative changes and even I’ll admit that the only was to get it back would be to make a coaching change.

Day does need to make some moves this off-season. I’m not saying things are fine and Day/OSU just need to wait for UM to be bad.

First with an exclamation point is getting rid of Parker Fleming and adjusting how special teams are coached. Pinning UM deep instead of 35 yards punts to the 30 all day give the defense a much better chance to get stops.

I also think Day needs to make a move with LJ Sr. and DL coaching by moving to someone new who is more on board with Knowle’s overall scheme.

Part of Knowles being able to hit the right level of aggressiveness (too much in ‘22, too little in ‘23) is either 1) implementing the Jack position and the variability/aggressiveness that brings or 2) a coach that can strike a better between between maintaining gap responsibilities and getting after the QB, which LJ Sr. has not been able to do. The DEs being good against the run, which they have been all season, does not mean they have to be lackluster at getting after the QB. Maybe that’s not having the Jack, maybe that’s the coaching of technique and situational awareness. Either way, moving on from LJ Sr. seems like the move.

That’s my magnum opus on moving forward. Another test for Day will be getting the team ready for whatever bowl game they’re in. I look forward to seeing the future in that game.

Hope springs eternal, and I will always be optimistic for the next wave of talent at Ohio State and their chance to shine next season.
Good stuff, but you make it sound like yesterday’s game was in a vacuum. Day needs to make sure we are able to adjust during the game. The Tight Ends were killing us. Zero adjustments from what I could tell. Why can’t Day order Knowles to dial it up in spots instead of vanilla to death? The signs of this were present all the way back to ND…..to Md…..to PSU. We can’t say we didn’t see it coming.

The players making mistakes happens. The guys played hard. The coaches coached vanilla. That should have been seen early in the game and adjusted.

Day’s first 4 years had generational talent at QB and WR. We don’t have that this year…..or next, probably. We have time to fix it. Tough decisions need to be made on personnel and coaches. I’m hopeful that Day will do this right. Because 4 losses in a row should be a guaranteed firing. No ifs , ands, or buts.

So I’ll leave my thoughts in the Ryan Day thread, as he’s the top guy in charge who calls the shots. I needed a few days to calm down and walk away from the ledge. First off, Day ain’t going anywhere, so I won’t even engage in the nonsense calling for his job. As that’s the default fan reaction. Day has shown that he can compete against any coach/team. But I echo the sentiments from Zach Boren on THE Podcast with Austin Ward and Birm, there are some assistants that need to be shown the door. The top ones, IMO are LJsr, Dennis, Fleming and Frye’s seat is getting hot.

LJsr is a legend, but there comes a time when legends are no longer getting the results they once did. I did my best to defend the DL’s lack of sacks, as it seemed like they were focusing more on stopping the run and setting the edge than getting to the QB. Gone are the dominant days of the Bosa’s and Young, LJsr has turned former 5star DEs Harrison, Sawyer and JTT into above average DEs. Sawyer was supposed to be another in the line of future 1st round DEs, and the guy hasn’t had more than 1 move in 3 yrs in S&G(that damn bull rush). JT is living off of one phenomenal game against Ped St, and being pedestrian pretty much the rest of his career. OSU had their coaches in leis and Hawaiian shirts at the Columbus airport to get this kid, who has a career who most of us will forget in a year. OSU needs a younger, hungrier coach to replace him. I don’t want to hear about him being an analyst or consultant, he needs to go into full retirement. The next DL coach needs to be comfortable running a DL with the Jack as Knowles wants. A slimmer DE who has ability to get to the QB, no more of the big plodding DEs who are 1 dimensional.

Dennis needs to go, as McCord didn’t improve, Brown doesn’t even look ready. I don’t care about the Urban Meyer connections, because Urban isn’t the coach anymore. And whom ever replaces him should have another open competition. And honestly, I’d be happy with Kienholz winning and Brown moving into the Portal if need be. McCord is what he is, a young version of Todd Boeckman. He’ll win games he’s supposed to, but can be a liability to win the game himself. And the comments about The Game being just another game are beyond infuriating to any Buckeye fan. And I shouldn’t have to explain why, it’s the GAME!

Fleming has been talked about ad nauseum and I agree with all. And his replacement of JL as a full time assistant.

Frye was left with not much, I get it. We all do. But he’s still paid millions to get the best out of what he has. Sherrone Moore, tears and all has turned half the OSU talent into road graders who aren’t afraid to pummel DL. The last play on the season is watch Jackson and Hinzman on their stomachs, and Simmons hugging air as the 3 scUM DL get free and cause McCord into the game sealing INT. The OL inconsistency was frustrating all year long. Even if 4 of them return, the OC should be an open competition, I can see Fryar competing inside against Tshabola and Montgomery moving to RT. But honestly Day should hit the portal for another OT, and have him compete against Simmons if they don’t think Fitzpatrick is ready. The OL absolutely HAS to get fixed if this team can move forward.

Day needs to go into CEO mode like has been said all off season. Find an OC to work with Hartline to call plays, or just let Hartline call the plays. It can’t be any worse than the inconsistency that Day showed all season. Waiting to kick an f’in FG to close out the half is one of the most gut less calls I’ve ever seen. 4th and 1 in The Game, you ram it down their throats! And we all can attest that Hartline knows all about the Game and wouldn’t be afraid to call an aggressive game against our arch nemesis.

I don’t think that OSU is far off from winning an NC and beating scUM, but it seems like a sense of entitlement has creeped into the team. And coaches are needed to kick the complacency out of them.

1 more guy that needs to be shown the door at this time as well is Coach Mick. Gone are the days talking about his famous workouts, and being Meyer’s right hand man. His tactics are no longer working, and the players don’t seem to be buying in. The S&C coach is a guy who sets the tone of the team as well as the HC. And he’s now falling on deaf ears, regardless of all the IG posts and tweets or guys screaming and sweating.

Serious question. Who is going to hire Hartline as a HC anytime soon? Let's be realistic here, I think it's pretty obvious that despite his official title he has little to do with actual play calling. We are seeing the same play calls we've seen during Day's whole tenure. Hartline is a great WR coach and recruiter, but if he IS responsible for calling plays right now, well, he needs a lot of work. How many schools are going to hire a guy who is basically a position coach as a Head Coach?
Problem with Hartline is like you and @Mike80 said, Hartline was promoted mainly due to his recruiting and his room having immense talent. But an OC needs to not only know how to call plays, but know blocking schemes, he needs to also be working with the running game, and overseeing the entire offense. I think Hartline is a positional coach with a fancy title. Similar to LJsr.
Something needs to be done about LJsr. Knowles is on the cusp of building a fighting force of extraordinary magnitude, and he doesn't need one of his position coaches going rogue. And calling him asst head coach is fucking absurd from an organizational standpoint when he's a position coach amd not a coordinator. It leads to shit like we're witnessing between he and Knowles.
I think Urban gave him that title when he coached a game while he was suspended during the ZS scandal. But it seems to have gone to his head, and Im starting to think he also had an ego problem at Ped St after getting passed over when Paterno died. I thought LJsr coming to OSU would make this position his swan song. But tbh, if I’m Day I don’t want him even as an analyst if he’s let go. Break free cleanly, hire a new, young DL coach whose style aligns with Knowles. We can’t have an old bull standing in the way of a dominant defense
