HB Dontre 'DeSoto' Wilson (Official Thread)

I think it is difficult for all Buckeye fans to temper their excitement about Dontre b/c we haven't seen someone in S&G w/ that type of explosiveness w/ the ball in their hands since Teddy Ginn Jr. Personally, I can't wait for that 1st ko return, punt return or end around and watch him leave people in his dust. Mid 4.3's forty is smokin'. And even if he does not have a break out freshman year, 2-3 more years in the weight room and in Urban's offense, it's only a matter of time.

Here's hoping for a Michael-Wiley-versus-Rice type of breakout performance by Dontre this season!

Read that article this morning. The gist of it is:

Braxton Miller on Dontre Wilson:
"That boy, when he catches the ball he's like a fish running from a shark or something. Throwing with him is a different type of feeling. He says, 'Throw it anywhere and I'll go get it.' I threw it behind him and he turned around, landed on his back and caught it. He's got something special. You need to watch out for him this year."

"I feel like he better be starting. He'll fit in anywhere. He can run any route or come in the backfield and take hand offs. He goes out there all the time with me, so he works hard with me. I'll call him up and say, 'Be ready'. He works hard, and hopefully he can show it out on the field."

Jack Mewhort on Braxton on Dontre:
"Braxton has been raving about him since he got on campus. Not only to you guys [the media], but even around the Woody he's been talking about him. In Braxton's words, he runs great routes. He's a speed guy, and we need that to go along with our weapons that we've had in the past."

Christian Bryant:
"Dontre looks to be a special player." His speed, his agility... When he catches the ball and you see how he moves, you know he's gonna be a special player."

If these guys are excited about him, I'm excited. But then again, I was excited about him before I knew that they were excited about him - or something like that. :)

It's not just what Dontre can create when he has the ball it's what he should open up for other players if teams start to focus on defending him specifically. Can't help but think of Drayton's comments "last year we were only working at 60% of capacity for this offense."

If we put up all those points against Neb at 60% then.......

It's always good to temper enthusiam. I seem to recall Jeff Demps being fast too. Sometimes it works, and sometimes it doesn't.

I'm not sure if you're saying Demps didn't work out or not, but he rushed for 2,470 yards in his career and averaged 6.7 yards per carry. I think the Buckeyes would take 600 yards rushing from Wilson every year.

Lose a Carlos Hyde.
Gain a Dontre Wilson.

Not sure what you mean by this. Are you privy to info about Carlos that none of us know? He's still with the team as our starting RB and power back with deceptive speed.
Wilson will be playing the pivot and slot, and will be rarely used as a primary RB in the backfield, but used more in space for 1 on 1 mismatches.

I agree. Although Carlos might be classified as a big back, he does have deceptive speed. He's no slouch when it comes to speed. Carlos may be one of the 5 fastest players on this team. I think he was #2 behind only Roby 2 years ago (he's put on a little mass since then so who knows if his forty time has stuck).

Except for the fact that Hyde is suspended indefinitely, which could change tomorrow or a month from now.

I think it would have been better stated that if Hyde does miss any time Dontre will have more of an opportunity to touch the ball.
