Report: UGA hopes to schedule Midwestern football powers
By Alexis Stevens
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution

Imagine the Michigan, Notre Dame, Ohio State or Penn State football team at Sanford Stadium. It could happen, if the UGA athletic director can pull it off.

Preliminary talks are under way with the Midwestern schools for one or more of them to join the Bulldogs' schedule, but it could be several years before the kickoffs, UGA AD Greg McGarity confirmed to the Dawgs247 website.

?We?d love to do a home-and-home with a Big Ten or Midwestern school that has a rich tradition,? McGarity told the website. ?We?re going to work as hard as we can to make that happen. Hopefully, within the next year, we?ll be able to have something in writing.?

McGarity said the potential match-ups would happen several years down the road.

Georgia has signed a memorandum of understanding to play a home-and-home football series against Ohio State in the 2020 and 2021 seasons, UGA athletic director Greg McGarity said today.

McGarity said the memorandum indicates that both schools intend to work out final details and play the games. Exact dates have not been determined, although McGarity said they will be within the “first couple of weeks” of each season. He said it has not been determined which game will be in Athens and which will be at Ohio State.

Bye-bye to bye?

Ohio State's 2014 Big Ten schedule begins with two byes in the first three weeks of league play. OSU athletics director Gene Smith said today he hopes to fill one of those byes.

According to the schedule released Wednesday by the Big Ten, Ohio State is off on Sept. 27, plays Purdue Oct. 4 and is off again Oct. 11.

Ohio State has announced its non-conference schedule for 2014, which includes a Sept. 13 game against Kent State and a Sept. 20 game against Virginia Tech. Smith mentioned Kent State and Virginia Tech as possibilities to be moved to one of those Big Ten bye dates.

"Hopefully, we get that done," Smith said.

Smith said the agreement with Vanderbilt to open the 2013 season was finalized about 10 weeks ago. Smith said Ohio State is negotiating with another non-conference team to fill another opening in the 2013 season. Smith would not name the school.

As for a 9-game league schedule, Smith said he expects it to be adopted eventually. But he's not sure it will happen starting in 2015. That may be decided at Big Ten meetings next month.

OSU press release
BIG TEN SCHOOLS TO PLAY NINE CONFERENCE GAMES BEGINNING WITH 2017 SEASON
Teams to feature four or five Big Ten home games on rotating basis

Park Ridge, Ill. – The Big Ten announced today that conference football programs will move to a nine-game Big Ten schedule beginning with the 2017 season.

Three teams each from the Legends Division and Leaders Division will feature five conference home games during odd-numbered years, while the other three schools from each division will host five conference contests during even-numbered years. The 2017 schedule will include five conference home outings for Iowa, Michigan State and Nebraska from the Legends Division and Illinois, Indiana and Ohio State from the Leaders Division. The 2018 schedule will feature five Big Ten home games for Michigan, Minnesota and Northwestern of the Legends Division and Penn State, Purdue and Wisconsin of the Leaders Division.

The Big Ten will return to a full nine-game conference schedule for the first time since the 1983 and 1984 seasons. Eight of 10 conference schools played nine-game schedules during the 1981 and 1982 seasons, while two of 10 teams featured nine-game schedules from 1971-72 and 1977-80.

The 116th season of Big Ten football kicks off with prime time home games for the defending Big Ten co-Champions, with Wisconsin hosting UNLV on Thursday, Sept. 1, and Michigan State facing Youngstown State on Friday, Sept. 2. The conference’s remaining 10 teams open action on Saturday, Sept. 3, including Nebraska’s first official game as a member of the Big Ten. Conference play will begin on Saturday, Oct. 1, and will feature divisional play for the first time. The champions of each division will meet on Saturday, Dec. 3, in the inaugural Big Ten Football Championship Game to be played at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis and televised by FOX Sports. The winner of the title game will earn the Big Ten Championship and a chance to play in either the Rose Bowl Game or Bowl Championship Series National Championship Game.

Cincy will not be on the 2012 schedule, but they will still visit tOSU in 2014 and 2018.

UCF will probably be the 4th non-conference opponent next season.

Cincinnati No Longer On OSU's 2012 Football Schedule; Buckeyes Looking to Add Central Florida
By Tony Gerdeman

Ohio State confirmed recent rumors on Monday afternoon that the University of Cincinnati has been dropped from the 2012 football schedule.

To replace the Bearcats, who were scheduled to come to Ohio Stadium on September 8th of next year, Ohio State is currently in discussions with Central Florida to fill the opening.

According to Ohio State, agreements between the two schools have yet to be finalized, but the fact that both schools are openly talking about discussions all but guarantees the deal will eventually be signed.

However, the Bearcats won't be entirely absent from the Buckeyes' future schedules, because the game that was originally scheduled for 2012 has been moved to 2018. That game will still take place in Columbus.

Also, the previously scheduled 2014 meeting between the two teams will not be altered. That game will also take place in Columbus.

Central Florida's schedule opened when they were recently dropped by the University of Pittsburgh. That then led them to begin a search for a high-profile road game, which looks to have ended in Columbus.

Originally, both Cincinnati and Pittsburgh had to make room on their conference schedule for the pending inclusion of TCU into the Big East, but since TCU has opted out of that agreement, this is no longer a need.

It appears that this agreement to move the 2012 game to 2018, even though it is no longer a necessity, can simply be considered an agreement by convenience for both schools at the moment.

Future Football Schedule Updates

Gene Smith, The Ohio State University Director of Athletics, announced today a number of future football schedule adjustments, including the addition of games against the University of North Carolina and Florida A&M University and the cancelling of a home-and-home series with the University of Tennessee. The scheduling news, in order of occurrence:

1. Ohio State and Florida A&M, a Football Championship Subdivision school from the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference, will play on Sept. 7, 2013, at Ohio Stadium. The game will be the first between the two schools on the gridiron. Florida A&M will be paid a guaranty of $850,000.

2. Ohio State and Atlantic Coast Conference member North Carolina have agreed to a home-and-home series. The teams will meet in Columbus on Sept. 5, 2015 and in Chapel Hill, N.C., on Sept. 23, 2017.

3. And because of the Big Ten Conference decision to play a nine-game conference season beginning with the 2017 season, Ohio State made the request to Tennessee to cancel the games the teams were scheduled to play in 2018 (in Columbus) and 2019 (in Knoxville). 2015 and 2017 will be interesting years with a 9 game Big Ten schedule. That'll be totally [censored]! VaTech and UNC along with the Big Ten then Oklahoma and UNC with the Big Ten. Awesome! And I imagine one Ohio team as well.

9 game BIG schedule should put an end to the ridiculous 2 or 3 Ohio team schedules. Bring one in a year.

Re: Florida A&M, a Football Championship Subdivision

I'm against playing 1-AA schools. They are a "no win" situation (just ask scUM about Appalachian State) and they don't help your SOS.

:shake:

No kidding.

If you want to play a team from a school in Tallahassee, how about the Seminoles?

The Rattlers are seldom a good team, even by FCS standards.
