Not for nothing, different fans process things differently. I wasn't born into the Buckeye culture, hell, I was into my 20s when I finally came aboard. All I knew about OSU and the Big Ten was that they were all in what I, and other East Coasters, called "the middle state". Which was the big boring mass between civilization on the East Coast, and the crazies out in California on the West Coast. Can't say I feel the same way now, even though I'm still more East Coast than anything else, but it's all a matter of perspective. I grew up in Northern VA, I had strong family ties to Princeton. So I loosely followed the Tigers, and was a fan of Navy as well. I also followed Virginia and Virginia Tech loosely, because in Mount Vernon, if you didn't go to the first, then you were probably going to the second.
My ending up at Ohio State was an unlikely series of mistakes, coincidences and just random chance. But I did end up there, same time as Sloopy45 (and many of the same places from what I remember from our talking about it), and really started to appreciate that Buckeye football wasn't just a sport, it was damn near a religion. The fanaticism isn't what impressed me though, it was the gameday atmosphere, the passion (different than fanaticism) of the fans, and the history of the program. I got into it all quickly, and in a huge way, and it's hard to remember a time now where I wasn't die hard OSU.
I don't hate Michigan, except for one game a year. And that probably comes from not growing up learning to. I like talking smack about them, I like it when their fans suffer in the wake of our success, but for me it's not unlike being a Marine and ragging on the Navy. Oh sure, we don't like the little squidlies, but someone has to get us from point A to point B so that we can get to the fighting. I can joke at their expense, with their bellbottoms, dog bowl caps, and openly homosexual nature -- but at the end, it is just jokes. Because despite the 'rivalry', we're still linked. OSU and Michigan are linked. The reason this rivalry is often referenced as the greatest of all, regardless of sports, goes above the history and passion that goes into it. It also speaks largely to the level of success both teams have had, and how often the contest directly impacts the rest of the college football landscape. In the 90s and 2000s alone, how many times has "the game" impacted the national championship picture? Quite a few. That's why, when we're not playing them, I actually want UM to win. Don't get me wrong, I laughed when they lost to Oregon. Then I spent the rest of the season really wishing that they had won that game. Because of SOS, because it gave the Pac10 something to talk some smack about, because Michigan looking weaker takes away some of our thunder if and when they beat them. If UM could be undefeated every year we play them so that we destroy their hopes of a title, and in the process catapult ourselves closer to one, that's damn near ideal. I would derive FAR move pleasure from beating an 11-0 pack of Weasels, than I would if they were 5-6, 3-8, etc.
Some people disagree. Vehemently. And that's fine. But it doesn't make me less of a fan. It might make me less an extremist, and that can be either good or bad depending on your perspective, but not less a fan. It may even make me less "pure" a Buckeye fan. I just don't know. I am what I am, and that's all that I am, I'm Pop... Nevermind.
OSU literally got me through one of the toughest stretches in my life. The 2002 title season couldn't have been timed better for me personally, the *only* positive in our lives at that time was looking forward to the next game each Saturday. And we were never let down that season. That team defied natural law on several occassions, and literally willed themselves to win. "A team of destiny" was an entirely appropriate label. I will forever be an OSU fan, no matter where I go or what I do. Likewise, I will always have a tie to the Marine Corps wherever I go, and whatever I do. The things you do, the people you meet, and the places you go that have the potential to have direct and permanent an impact on your life, are few and far between. But OSU was definitely one for me.
Does coming into it late make me less a fan than my buddy Dubs? I don't know. I only know how it all is for me, I have no idea what his experience has been like, but I know when we talk, I recognize at least familiar levels of interest and passion in the program. Maybe he has 'more', but I'm not sure I care. I'm am sure that it's going to vary from person to person. I know 30something guys born and raised in CBus, who claim to be huge football and Buckeye fans, but they're definitely casual about it. I don't consider them huge fans relative to the average 'online' Buckeye fan, but they do. I know guys who have never even seen the Shoe, who are bigger fans than they are. It's all relative and personal, much like a religious interest I suppose.
I'm not "taking a side" here. I'm just sharing my perspective. Which in this case, is that if someone says they're a Buckeye fan, and shows they are through the things they do and say, then that's good enough for me.
It doesn't have to be good enough for someone else. That's my whole point. To each their own, as long as we can agree that being a Buckeye can mean different things to different people.
