Ex-Wolverine BS (all merged - including the tearful goodbyes)

I think I finally get it...

Buckeye fans have said that I am not a "true Buckeye," and that I may never understand what it's like to be that passionate for the Buckeyes.

It's true, I may not. I want to give it a season in the Horseshoe before I say for sure that I never *will* have that "Buckeye spirit," but I don't have it yet.

That said, I *DO* understand the passion behind it. And I feel it.

I started hating UM about three weeks after I first got there. Every week since then, my hatred has grown and grown. I had season tickets for football in 2001, and only went to one game. I hated it.

Every week, more and more hatred. When I graduated, I didn't go to commencement, because it was just going to be thousands of people I hate. Instead, I spent the morning sleeping next to my girlfriend and spent the day with my family trying to get away from the worthless UM pukes.

My girlfriend still goes there, and I still go to pick her up every Thursday. I dread it, not because of the drive, but because spending that ten minutes at UM is miserable. Seeing the people makes me clench my fists and grit my teeth. I hate them. I hate the school.

Last night, I went to see UM play Hawaii, since my girlfriend is Hawaiian. We wore leis and were decked out in green. It was the first time I had ever been to see a UM game to root for the other team.

I have never seen a group of fans with less class. Period. I won't talk about what happened, but suffice it to say I am thoroughly ashamed of the school.

People sensed some hesitency on my part toward embracing Ohio State, and said so. I will tell you why.

I have been admitted, and I have spoken to the profs numerous times. I know what I would be doing. The problem is that I haven't been offered any money yet, and I can't afford it if I don't get money. They say they are trying to find it for me, but my (potential) department doesn't have a whole lot to give. I don't want to let myself go nuts for the Bucks and then end up having to go somewhere else because of money.

I was accepted everywhere I applied, I made my decision, I want to go to OSU. My heart is there. Now, I need the money to get my body there. And if/when I get there, nobody will lead the charge against Michigan with more zeal than I will. I can't call it "scUM" because "scum" isn't a strong enough word. I don't know words derogatory enough to describe Michigan.

I will tell you one thing, there is no scenario possible where I would root for Michigan over OSU. I don't care what it is. I said before that I would root for UM over OSU if they had a better chance to win a National Championship. Screw that. I was wrong.

If I end up at OSU like I hope, I will do my best to become a Buckeye as best I can. If I end up somewhere else, I will be a strong OSU supporter because OSU is Michigan's strongest rival.

I hate the place.

Ex-I don't know what happened to you at the bball game, but I do know how I have been treated at tOSU-SCum football games that I have attended, and I feel bad for you. Regardless, I hope you get the funding you need. Whether or not you do, though, do me one favor: attend at least ONE home football game this fall. If you do, you will definitely "get it", and will probably become a Buckeye fan for life, even if you don't attend school here. Remember, you don't need to be a student to be a fan.

You're from out of state, you'll get your money.... the university likes to take Ohio's tax dollars and give it to kids who come from out of state.

My wife is finishing up grad school at OSU. Every single person from out of state (about half the program), got a partial or full ride for at least the first year (those with partials, also got cushy jobs with the university, so they could earn money while they studied).

Of the half that were instate... ONE got help, the rest were on their own (some did manage to get cushy jobs from the university but no scholie help)...

And the funny thing is that the gpa's and test results were basically the same for all the kids... OSU wants to get a diversified class, and they pay for the kids who come out of state to get that. Now in their defense, most of the out of staters were only given one year scholies so they have to pay for the second year (and the out of state fees are much higher), but I still found it a crock that the scholies the program had to give to kids almost all went the the oos kids....

I hope the $$ comes through for you. Are there any teaching (GTA) positions open? When I was a grad student at OSU ('88-'91) I had a GTA position. Being a GTA meant that my tuition was paid and I earned money as well. My understanding at that time was this was standard operating procedure. Why didn't your wife do that gbear?

And do take FKA advice. Attend a home game this fall. That should go a long ways towards your conversion from the dark side>

prof,

OSU doesn't have her program at the undergrad level (only masters and PhD)... well didn't (I think this year or next year they are starting it up).

There were some other teaching positions, however they try to get the oos folks into those postions (for reasons stated above), that is actually how some got the tuition paid for, they didn't actually get a scholie, however as a TA (or whatever they are called) they had their tuition paid for.

My wife made some friends during her residence... those folks got her into a position that would pay her the same as she was getting, allow her a full flux 20 a week schedule (come in when you want, leave when you want.... so long as you get 20 hours in each week, and when you are in, you stay for at least two hours), and they picked up 2/3 of her tuition this year (winter and spring quarters... fall quarter she was on her own).

The oos folks were ticked when they found out she got it. Remember the scholies were one year deals, the bulk of them are on the hook for the tuition $$ this year (the job wasn't publicly released until they hired her... so that way her contacts could get her and not have to explain why they picked her over others  )... thankfully her contacts were of the same mindset as her, that most of the scholies/tuition paid jobs should go to the instate students since it is their tax dollars paying for a bulk of the education anyway (that and it costs the department less if they take an in-state kid, but politics don't allow them to take them...).

All's good in our house, I was a bit frustrated when I foundout about all the oos kids getting their first year for free... my wife and I joked that if we knew that, she should have gone out of state, and let others pay for her school :wink2: (assumeing the others state Universities are the same as OSU)...
