DT Doug Worthington (Official Thread)

Jab Taos.

Counter Winslow.

Taos responds, holds firm....

I'm sorry, I've got some UFC on. It just grows on you.

I like this DLine so far, with the youth and the talent being so even that we're gonna see all of 'em. If this is the byproduct of having great-but-small recruiting classes that go un-noticed, then I guess I'm in JT's boat. Worthington was certainly a well regarded recruit, as were most of those guys, but with small classes we slip off of the radar. But what we get in quality more than makes up for what we get in quantity. And even if it takes a few years to get acclimated and/or healthy, such as the case with Worthington, then by the time these guys get in the game for meaningful playing time (i.e. Bucks are young to the naked eye...), they really aren't that young anymore. I am very excited about the direction that this defense is headed, and that relies very heavily on what guys like Worthington, Denlinger, Larimore, Abdallah, and company are able to accomplish when the ball is snapped. We are in good shape. :oh:

Worthington feeds on foes? offenses

REPOSITORY SPORTS WRITER

COLUMBUS It was dinnertime last week at Ohio Stadium. Doug Worthington doesn?t like to miss a good meal. Just ask Dennis DiPaolo.

DiPaolo?s Italian restaurant (Ilio DiPaolo?s) has been in Buffalo for 42 years. Never before had Dennis hired a dishwasher who could eat like Worthington. After Worthington transferred to St. Francis High School because his school closed, he got the job.

I love Josh. He just has a "itchy trigger finger!" :tongue2:

I'm sure he loves you too and is just trying to protect you from injuring yourself while patting yourself on the back for something you vaguely suggested.

Meanwhile, Doug is an encouraging case study in perserverance. He's come here, looked to be making a push and then got injured in bowl practice and then comes back to a different position, a position he might be considered undersized or "over-tall" for, and is still pushing hard and doing quite well. Perhaps we can pat him on the back now. :wink2:

On the Minnesota win

"Every win is great. It was a Big Ten win, so that was special. We practiced hard and we have an in-season list and we're trying to accomplish our goals."

On Purdue

"Every Big Ten game is tough. With our reputations and rivalries, we have to get ready. Do what the coaches tell us, watch film, whatever can make us better and be ready for Purdue."

On playing at night

"It's a little bit different. The days are a little bit longer, but it is another game and the lights will be on and the stands will be as rowdy as ever."

On the defensive line

"We are a young group. We have a great leader in Vernon Gholston to pick us up. We all strive to get better everyday. So, as a young defensive lineman the sky is the limit. We're still trying to get better, get that first sack. We're still trying to get better everyday."

Ohio State notebook: Big moment for tackle
Worthington makes first interception of his life, but only after scare from referees

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

As elated as Ohio State's Doug Worthington was to cradle the interception, his stomach turned when he saw a penalty flag.

"I just hoped the play counted," the defensive tackle said yesterday after a 24-17 win over Michigan State.

He got his wish. The flag was on Michigan State for holding and was declined.

Worthington, a sophomore, said it was the first pickoff of his life.

"I've had some in practice," he said. "In fact, I caught a few this week."

In the second quarter, defensive end Vernon Gholston flew in and pressured Spartans quarterback Brian Hoyer, who hurried a low throw. Worthington went down and scooped it, an impressive display of athleticism for someone 6 feet 7 and 270 pounds.

"I just hugged the ball and hoped it wasn't on the ground," he said.

It was a good game for the defensive line, which didn't have starting tackle Todd Denlinger for a third straight game. Tackle Dexter Larimore had a sack and end Cameron Heyward half a sack.

The line also stymied the Spartans' ground game, which was averaging 242.7 yards, ninth in the country. Michigan State had just 59 yards in 28 carries, with a long run of 10.

"There's 11 guys out there, and every one of them can make a play," Larimore said. "It just depends on who's there at the moment."

I'll admit to being a bit concerned when I saw this relatively beanpole-like fellow starting at DT. But my concerns were ill-founded. He has played very well this year against the run, and his INT was icing on the cake. Great going, Doug!

I'll agree. I was very concerned about leverage issues with him being 6'7" down there in the middle. Coaches say he has great hands and plays very low for someone that tall. He has, as well as the rest of the d-line, played way beyond my expectations so far. It really is amazing what they have done against the run replacing so many vital pieces of the puzzle.

I think of big Doug as a better fit for attacking spread teams versus running teams like Wiscy who will push him and twist him sideways. If Doug can hold his ground and block a passing lane that's his best attribute. Hope he can gain some more weight(a problem).

So you felt that he got pushed around yesterday?
