DT Doug Worthington (Official Thread)

I think of big Doug as a better fit for attacking spread teams versus running teams like Wiscy who will push him and twist him sideways. If Doug can hold his ground and block a passing lane that's his best attribute. Hope he can gain some more weight(a problem).

I'm with you on this. During the first half, it seemed like the d-line was getting abused then making a great play to stop them. The 10 sacks are great but, when the QB got all day to go deep was driving me nuts.someone please explain that to me.

I look it as the Badgers O-line and OSU d-line as EQUAL. First half all badgers , Second half :osu:

Wiscy does that to a lot of d-lines. Their line is huge up front. The good thing for OSU, like OSU did in the first half, the Badgers abandoned the run even when they were having success with it. And then, in the fourth, they had to play catch up when the Bucks went on their scoring stretch. They forced them to throw and then the d-line could pin their ears back and rush the passer. It's a lot easier as a d-lineman when instead of having to read run-pass, it's just pass and get to the QB. The d-line has played great all year. Rushing stats are often misleading anyway. The Bucks would give up more ground yards if teams didn't have to go into pass-happy mode so quickly from being down so early in games. But even with that said, they have been very stout up front, considering that was one of most peoples areas of concern going into the season.

I thought Worthington played a real good game... best game of any of the DTs..

I also, didnt see Donovan having all day to throw downfield.. He hit one big play in the pass game downfield (to Beckum)..

The other huge pass play, was on a perfect 3rd down, where we blitzed a ton of guys and they slipped it underneath to the WR, with nobody within 20 yards of him..

On the layoff

"Everyone has been working really hard during this break. We have all just been working so hard and the preparation has been just tremendous."

On playing in the Superdome

"They (LSU) might have more fans than we have, but I know our fans will travel well. I'm really excited to get down there and get in that atmosphere."

On Ohio State's road schedule

"We have won at Penn State and Ann Arbor, so I think that will be a big help to us in this game. I can't even image how crazy it is going to be down there."

The defense was dominating in both games...gave up 354 total yards and 13 offensive points in those two games combined.

I like Donald's headphones.

I think you were looking for Donald's thread rather than Doug Worthington's......although Doug probably likes those headphones too

Ohio State?s Worthington steps toward his objectives
St. Francis grad finds a home at defensive tackle
By Allen Wilson - News Sports Reporter
Updated: 01/07/08

Doug Worthington arrived at Ohio State University three years ago with two primary goals: becoming a starter and a national champion.

The Buffalo native is halfway to accomplishing both objectives.

Worthington is a first-year starting defensive tackle for the top-ranked Buckeyes, who meet No. 2 LSU in the BCS national championship game tonight in the Louisiana Superdome.

It wasn?t long ago that Worthington was terrorizing opposing offenses as a high school All-America defensive lineman at St. Francis. Now he?s on college football?s grandest stage with a chance to help his team claim the sport?s biggest prize.

?For me personally it?s a blessing to be in this position,? Worthington said by phone from New Orleans. ?I have a great group of guys around me and some great coaches. It?s the best situation for me and I?m so happy to be here.?

?Every guy on this team has aspirations of going to the next level, but it?s going to be a while for me,? said Worthington, whose father, Doug Sr., played basketball at Canisius and the University of Colorado. ?I still have so much more to learn. I want to continue to work hard and get everything I can out of my last two seasons. If I do that, I feel the sky?s the limit for me.?

Putting on the Pounds: Doug Worthington moved from defensive end to defensive tackle last season, and was a bit undersized for that position. He also played with a knee problem.

Worthington's knee issues are resolved, and he has begun the process of getting his size up to where it needs to be to be an effective interior defensive lineman.

"I'm 282. That's about eight pounds (up) from the bowl game," Worthington said.

"I still want to be 290 for the season so I can play that defensive line and defensive tackle position and that three-technique position when I have to.

"I'm trying to put on good weight.

"I've got two seasons to be a 300 pounder. I want to be a 300-pound defensive tackle by the time I leave but there's no rush for it."
