DB Brendon White (transfer to Rutgers)

The most impressive thing Brendan showed to me was his awareness on angles and run fit. There were several times Martinez was shooting for the sideline and White closed it down with the proper angle and he played fast doing it.

He looked like the fastest player on the defense yesterday. I’m not sure that he is, but he played downhill a lot and took the proper angles doing so.

He was better than good yesterday....he was amazing. We haven’t seen our guys play downhill like that in a long time. It was just refreshing to see someone literally step up and make some plays.

100% this. With all the talent we have and the utter inability to take proper angles and run fits, I just had assumed the coaches were blowing it. Then Brendon came in and was lights out in those areas, so who knows at this point I guess (although my gut says it is likely a combination of players and coaching). All I know is we have a kid that grew up right on the banks of the Olentangy playing for his dream school and killed it on Saturday, so they better damned well keep him on the field. Looking forward to seeing what Brendon can do moving forward.

Switch Fuller back to his old position. Start White. We especially need him to help stop the run. I love his size, instincts, speed, angles and ability to bring guys down with bad intentions. This is exactly what we need on D right now.
White emerging also permits Wade to return to getting reps at CB, which is where he'll likely start next year opposite Okudah.

Who we've heard a lot about but couldn't get past Pryor and Wint... at least according to whoever (Grinch?) is deciding the depth chart there ?
Hopefully some things happen during bowl practice... seems like the next opportunity Meyer will allow big changes. We could really use a Vonn Bell stepping up.
There's no excuse for the LBs to be this bad. There's loads of talent and a lot of veteran talent.

Safety has a lot of excuses to be this bad. They recruited poorly for multiple years, and are left with Fuller (high 4), Wint (3 star), some transfers and nothing but guys who have been here for 4-18 months.

Pryor, White and Riep just started year 2. White wasn't even playing safety at first.

Proctor is less than six months into his career.

I'm digging back through that 2015 class and man, that was a rough group of safeties.

Setting aside non-options like Minkah, the biggest name that pops out is Brian Cole, who would not have helped. I'm probably missing someone there but overall, that was a rough group with even worse recruiting.
Remember Ginn not playing till midway through the year
Surely there's a Woody Hayes era one we can dig up
or Elliot not being the feature offensive weapon until our 2nd QB went out?
I remember Elliott running timidly in the VT loss and being outclassed by a 200 lb scat back, true freshman named Curtis Samuel.

I remember him being a 2nd year guy who really emerged down the stretch, and exploded from good to great when the offense took off.

Agreed, Fuller can play either spot and is a veteran, I see no reason why the move should be an issue. I think that pairing would bring a whole new dynamic to the secondary. And I think why White is getting so much love is because he came in and played like he cared, which unfortunately is not a common theme on our defense right now and it just blows my mind. Even if he makes some mistakes from here on out, at least he is leaving it all on the field.

Stupid question time... but assuming Fuller moves over so White start ... then leaves for NFL... who replaces him ? Are we back to square 1?

At the end of the day I think the answer is no. We should have the talent to field 2 good safeties even if Fuller leaves and I really think any of our safeties should be able to play either spot in our scheme. But you also have to just make the decision that is right for 2018. I'm as pessimistic as anyone that this team will make it through the year without at least 1 more loss...hell, I think there will be 2 more losses if I am being honest. But we can't play that way and I know that isn't where you were going at all, but we have to make the decisions that win us the most games in 2018. The reality is that we are still a 1 loss team with a shot at the conference title and a bid to the CFB playoffs...whether we want to be in the playoffs to get destroyed by Bama or Clemson in the unlikely event that we win out is another story, but the point is there is the possibility and that has to be the goal despite the way we have been playing. Get the best players on the field and let everything sort itself out.

Makes a lot of sense after reading this. I am with you though, the poor LB play is wholly inexcusable and the safeties at least have some excuse and have some hope for improvement in the next few weeks. But guys like White, Riep, etc. need to really come along.

URBAN MEYER DOESN'T NAME BRENDON WHITE A STARTER, BUT SAYS HE'S “CERTAINLY GOING TO PLAY”

98529_h.jpg

Brendon White stole the show on Saturday, even though he played a little more than half the game.

White entered the contest in the second quarter after Jordan Fuller was ejected for targeting and was immediately the most productive player of the field, leading the team in total tackles, solo tackles and tackles for a loss and earning himself defensive player of the game honors from the coaches.

With his performance, coupled with Ohio State's struggles at safety, it seems obvious that White could help fill that void, with Fuller moving to the field safety spot and taking over the boundary safety role.

But as of Monday, Urban Meyer was not ready to formally announce White as a starter.

“Those decisions are being made in the next couple of days,” Meyer said.

Film study: Brendon White brings a much needed spark to the Buckeye defense

The Buckeyes may have finally found the answer at safety.

1056960300.jpg.0.jpg

When Jordan Fuller was ejected early in the second quarter for targeting, you could almost feel the collective blood pressure of Ohio Stadium shoot up. At that point in the game, the Buckeyes hadn’t been great on defense by any means, but they had a nine-point lead, and Jordan Fuller, like he had all season, was keeping the defense together with his play at safety.

Now the defense’s top leader was gone for the rest of the game, and one of Ohio State’s weakest positions would have to go to the bench to find a replacement. As Buckeye fans know, Ohio State found more than a one-time replacement in Brendon White. They may have found a future star, and the answer at safety that had vexed Greg Schiano and the defensive staff all season long.

White’s impact on the defense showed up almost immediately. He was a bit quiet on his first drive, as he got into the flow of the game and mostly hovered around the defensive backfield, but on his second drive at safety, White caught up to the speed of the game, and started wreaking havoc.

This was the first of many times that Brendon White showed something that no other Buckeye defender has shown much at all this year. Out of his high safety spot, he read the play, tracked Adrian Martinez’s scramble, got downhill, and most importantly, took the correct pursuit angle to bring Martinez down in the backfield. This is not in any way an easy play to make, especially for a young safety, but White’s discipline, awareness and fantastic athleticism helped him make this first-down saving tackle.

Just a couple plays later he makes a similar tackle in the red zone, as he reads the run, gets downhill, and puts himself in a position to succeed. He actually misses the read slightly, setting the edge a bit too hard on the fake by Devine Ozigbo, but his quickness allow him to burst into the hole when Ozigbo does, and he wraps up and keeps Ozigbo out of the endzone with a tackle that he makes look pretty easy, despite a super high degree of difficulty. It’s great to see a young player make up for an over pursuit like this, because generally, that quick adjustment is the sign of a good player.

While Nebraska did end up finding the end zone a few plays later on that drive, it was still super encouraging to see White making the plays that Jordan Fuller has made all year, and in some cases (like the late adjustment on the running back), plays that I’m not entirely sure Fuller can make. Fuller is a steady tackler, a smart player, and a great leader, but White seems to be on a whole different level physically. That’ll make them excellent complementary players if Ohio State does go with a Fuller/White safety pairing for the remainder of the season.

Speaking of that ability to adjust and adapt his pursuit, White didn’t just do that on the on red zone run. He did it all game long. He did it on runs that got to the second level, tracking the ball the whole way and preventing any kind of big play, he did it in coverage, sticking close to his receiver, reading their route and either covering them completely or allowing a catch and immediate tackle.
