DB Brendon White (transfer to Rutgers)

The most impressive thing Brendan showed to me was his awareness on angles and run fit. There were several times Martinez was shooting for the sideline and White closed it down with the proper angle and he played fast doing it.

He looked like the fastest player on the defense yesterday. I’m not sure that he is, but he played downhill a lot and took the proper angles doing so.

He was better than good yesterday....he was amazing. We haven’t seen our guys play downhill like that in a long time. It was just refreshing to see someone literally step up and make some plays.

and related to the point I was making with the baseball analogy (the ability to judge a fly ball is innate)

Just like an extremely toolsy/athletic outfielder who constantly takes bad angles on fly balls, I don't think a guy is going to figure out how to take a proper angle after hundreds of failed attempts well into the middle of his college career. You can either read the angle from the jump or you cannot. Athleticism can only help you make up for the bad read. White can clearly read the proper run angle and get there with force which is something no one else has shown the ability to do at that position all year.

Now, given White's size, he may look a lot like Mike Doss in pass coverage as well so I am holding off getting my hopes too high but he damn sure is the answer to the safeties-taking-shit-angles-after-the-running-back-finds-yet-another-gaping-hole-in-the-front-7 issue.

Frustrating to believe coaches did not see this in practice......the revolving door we had at safety and the one guy who can take an angle didn't see the field until now?

Although I feel much better knowing we'll have someone at safety next year who gets it, and hopefully with Proctor next year will be a vast improvement. Okudah, Wade, Proctor, White.....yes, please.

.

The only thing I can even remotely guess here is that he gets absolutely destroyed in practice trying to cover (and it would have to be extreme to warrant leaving that kind of run stopping production on the bench).

If a lack of coverage ability turns out to not be the case, then it's just an inexcusable gaffe and would be a big indicator of Grinch being a significant part of the problem imo.

Pryor does alright in pass. Not elite. Not great. Just usually reliable.
But that still doesnt explain how the other guy was in there? I dont want to bash so left names out... it was painful to watch.

right so the logic here is

player X (avg vs pass + liability vs run) = starter with 9 game track record of eye popping failure.

White (Y vs pass + elite vs run) = wasn't even going to see the field yesterday but for injuries and an ejection.

White's "Y" better be a massive negative number or some coaches judgement is so bad he needs to be gone. Yesterday.

Not to get off topic, but I would contend Doss was a net ++ in pass d. He obviously wasn’t great in tight man to man, but made so many big interceptions and was a great zone defender.

fair enough, Donni Nickey then

Regardless, the biggest thing Buckeye Nation is going to be wondering is what happens this week when Pryor is back?

I get the rps nature of Pryor and White potentially offsetting.

I'm looking more at Player Z who proved to be a liability in every facet of the game and only stopped being a co-starter in Week 7.

Edit: closer analysis shows Z stopped splitting snaps Week 7 against Minny and went back to ST only. Updated accordingly.

There was a play Martinez bounced it outside and I'm thinking "oh shit" then 25 closed him off with a perfect pursuit angle. It was that play that impressed me most!

I'm not ready to say that yet; more of a chance than I thought before the season though.

He's got good size, his film is good, OSU DB history on his side, had a 2nd round grade coming into the season, and has played with a rough hamstring all year.

I'd still say it's more likely he's gone than he's back.
