DB Brendon White (transfer to Rutgers)

Best guy on D today.

No snaps coming into game.

Sounds about right for this season.
Want to know why?

Because he's not the body type they want or the skill set they want.

We want the 6 foot 195 pound cover corner as a safety.

Yet here we are White comes in and absolutely shows up more so than any safety we have.

Some kids are just football players and that's what Brendan is.

BRENDON WHITE HAD A CAREER PERFORMANCE AFTER JORDAN FULLER'S EARLY EXIT

Brendon White wasn't even expected to play meaningful snaps during Saturday's game against Nebraska, but when the dust settled, he had the team lead in tackles and tackles for loss.

When Jordan Fuller was ejected in the second quarter for targeting, White stepped into the first meaningful action of his career joining a secondary already missing two starters – and he had himself one heck of a a coming out party.

White finished the game with 13 total tackles – tied with Malik Harrison for the team lead in the game – and had team-highs with eight solo tackles and two tackles for loss.

“Brendon White came in and did a hell of a job,” Urban Meyer said after the game.

For White, it was a long time coming.

“It is a dream come true. Hard work pays off," White said after the game. “My time is ready. We all prepared for this. You never know what is going to happen in a game. We all face adversity, we faced it the right way and in a positive manner. No one got worried, we did our job and the rest took care of itself.”

Football: Brendon White stepped up when Ohio State needed him most

The Buckeyes have been susceptible to big plays through the deep ball, and, coming in against Nebraska, they were without sophomore cornerback Jeffrey Okudah with a groin injury and sophomore safety Isaiah Pryor to an impingement of the shoulder.

Then, in the second quarter, junior safety Jordan Fuller was ejected for a targeting penalty, leaving a depleted secondary with major question marks on who would step up.

This gave sophomore safety Brendon White the opportunity to be the guy. White proved he could be that and more in Ohio State’s 36-31 victory over the Cornhuskers.

“Dream come true actually. After the game, I started tearing up,” White said. “I just couldn’t believe, you know, growing up from Ohio … went to Olentangy Liberty 15 minutes from here and, always went to the games as a high school kid and then, being able to play at your dream school, it’s pretty cool.”

White finished the game with 13 tackles and two for a loss in the game, both of which were team highs. The sophomore had six tackles in his collegiate career before Saturday’s game.

“Brendon White came in and did a hell of a job,” head coach Urban Meyer said. “He’s been working very hard in practice to earn the trust of the coaches to get on the field.”

White made big plays all night for Ohio State, including on the biggest stop of the night.

With Nebraska down 30-21 in the fourth quarter, the ball was at the Buckeyes’ four-yard line. Senior running back Devine Ozigbo carried the ball up the middle on third down, and was stopped by White at the one, forcing Nebraska to kick a field goal, missing an opportunity that ended up costing the Cornhuskers in the long run.

“My time is ready, you know, we all prepare for this. You never know what’s gonna happen in any game,” White said. “You gotta face adversity and we faced it in the right way, in a positive manner and no one got worried and we just did our job and the rest took care of itself.”

I'm sure his father was an extremely proud man today.

He wouldn't be on the roster if he wasn't what they wanted physically.

Not sure why he hasn't been playing but pretty confident it isn't because of his body type.

He came in as a WR so I don't think that's entirely accurate.

Brought in as an athlete and found a spot. Early on there was discussion of OLB as well. I think he practiced with the team during bowl prep after graduating early... during that time I think they slotted him with the LBs. could be wrong... and too lazy to go look.

Can’t argue with his play though. Wonder if bouncing a few positions may have slowed getting him on the field. Hopefully he continues to play.

The most impressive thing Brendan showed to me was his awareness on angles and run fit. There were several times Martinez was shooting for the sideline and White closed it down with the proper angle and he played fast doing it.

He looked like the fastest player on the defense yesterday. I’m not sure that he is, but he played downhill a lot and took the proper angles doing so.

He was better than good yesterday....he was amazing. We haven’t seen our guys play downhill like that in a long time. It was just refreshing to see someone literally step up and make some plays.
