Columbus Blue Jackets (Official Thread)

a bit of a gamble… See last paragraph
The Jackets announced on Friday that they have agreed to a seven-year deal with the free-agent winger, the longest deal they could sign him to. According to Bob McKenzie, the contract is worth $37.1 million, or $5.3 million annually.

This is a huge splash for the Jackets -- and a huge gamble. Horton can be the type of scoring winger the Jackets really need. Offense was a major problem for them last season and he gives them a true top-line talent, even if he is a little inconsistent.

However it's a gamble for multiple reasons. First off, any time you give a player a seven-year contract it's risky. But then take into account that Horton will shortly undergo shoulder surgery and there must be concerns going forward.

A lot of money, but a truly determined player, who will give you everything he's got every night. I think it's a great move.

Good luck. He's asking for much more than he's actually worth. Could still be a solid option, but there's better value out there. Wouldn't be all that bad a move though.

Thank God.

Flip is a good 3rd line centerman and a decent 2nd PP center, but if you want to pay $5 million per year for a guy who will lose EVERY battle along the boards along with losing his defensive responsibilities at least 2 times per game or more, then he's your guy.

He'll be a complete disaster in TB.

Does the NHL teams still have insurance (in case of injury) on the players contracts?

Blue Jackets sign defenseman St-Denis

dskl.jpg

The Columbus Blue Jackets added depth on the blue line, signing free agent defenseman Fr?d?ric St-Denis on Sunday.

As per TSN, it is a one-year, two-way deal, and that he was an unrestricted free agent, after his previous contract with the Montreal Canadiens had expired.

St-Denis was never drafted and comes to the Blue Jackets after spending the last five seasons in the Canadiens organization.

He has only 17 games of National Hockey League experience, which came over the course of the 2011-12 season. He had a rather nice showing in his limited time with the Canadiens, scoring once and adding two assists.

#CBJ have hired Ville Siren (formerly of STL) as the team's head amateur scout, and Josef Boumedienne comes on board as a European scout.

Siren is highly-regarded & spent the last nine years w/#stlblues. Played a big role in drafting of Eller, Polak, Berglund, Tarasenko & more.

Boumedienne, a former defenseman, just wrapped up a 17-year career in the NHL, AHL & Europe. Will primarly scout for #CBJ overseas.
