Columbus Blue Jackets (Official Thread)

Blue Jackets' top-10 prospects rated #14 in NHL by Hockey Prospectus site:

14. Columbus Blue Jackets
Columbus' system improved thanks to their three first round picks at the 2013 draft, as well as the development of Boone Jenner. The Blue Jackets also possess some quality college prospects, such as T.J. Tynan and Mike Reilly. 2012 second overall pick Ryan Murray does not hurt, either. Columbus boasts good depth, but their top end is merely decent.

First-rounders Murray, Rychel to make Jackets debuts at Traverse City tourney

Two of Columbus’ most highly-touted prospects will be on display in a matter on days.

Ryan Murray — the No. 2 overall pick at the 2012 NHL Entry Draft — and Kerby Rychel, the 19th overall pick at the ’13 draft, will make their Columbus debuts at Detroit’s Annual NHL Prospect Tournament in Traverse City, MI.
The tournament runs from Sept. 5-9 and will feature eight teams: Columbus, Buffalo, Carolina, New York (Rangers), Dallas, Detroit, Minnesota and St. Louis.

.
There’s also a third prospect worth monitoring.

The Jackets will be paying close attention to the play of Boone Jenner, their second-round pick (37th overall) at the 2011 NHL Entry Draft. Jenner, 20, looked as though he was in line to make the team last season, but Columbus opted to return him to OHL Oshawa — where he scored 82 points in 56 games and was named to Team Canada’s entry at the World Juniors.

Richards warns Blue Jackets ‘we can’t just turn it on’ when season starts

richardsgetty.jpg

The Columbus Blue Jackets face a new challenge in joining the Metropolitan Division via realignment, so perhaps it shouldn’t be surprising that head coach Todd Richards is getting worked up about preseason games.

From Sunday to Tuesday, Richards has questioned his team’s efforts more than the results, emphasizing that they can’t just flip a switch when the regular season begins.

On Sunday, Richards downplayed an OT exhibition win against the Pittsburgh Penguins, bringing up the team’s Oct. 4 season opener.

“We can’t expect come Oct. 4 that we’re going to pick up right where we left off,” Richards said on Sunday. “We still have to work hard.”

Two days later, the Blue Jackets played a pair of preseason games, with one group beating the Minnesota Wild’s 3-1* and another losing to the Buffalo Sabres 3-1. Richards sounded like a broken record after those games tonight.

“One thing concerns me: are we waiting for Oct. 4? We can’t just turn it on then,” Richards said. “Your effort should never be questioned at what you do. Everything we got last year was through our effort.”

GroupAday1rotator.jpg

The Columbus Blue Jackets have made their second roster moves of training camp with the assignment of 18 players, club General Manager Jarmo Kekalainen announced today.
The following 17 players have been assigned to the club’s AHL affiliate in Springfield: forwards Alex Aleardi, Sean Collins, Jake Hansen, Andrew Joudrey, Jeremy Langlois, Broc Little, Spencer Machacek, Jonathan Marchessault, Lukas Sedlak, Dalton Smith and Trent Vogelhuber; and defensemen Thomas Larkin, Joe Lavin, Austin Madaisky, Patrick McNeill, Blake Parlett and Frederic St. Denis.
Machacek, McNeill and St. Denis were placed on waivers for the purpose of being assigned to the Falcons.
In addition, the club assigned forward Kerby Rychel to the Windsor Spitfires of the Ontario Hockey League.
The Blue Jackets, whose roster currently stands at 33 players (18 forwards, 11 defensemen, four goaltenders), are scheduled to practice on Friday at 11 a.m. at the OhioHealth Ice Haus.

Well, the team that should have been tired played with grit and heart and beat the Blue Jackets in their home opener. Calgary lost a heart breaker last night and should have been licking their wounds. The Jackets looked sluggish and uninspired. There also doesn't seem to be anyone capable of making a play right now on this team. One game of 82. Better get their shit together tonight. They travel to take on the Isles tomorrow. Can't stress how important it is that this team not get off to a slow start this season.

All that hype and they lose the home opener extremely disappointing but they did take down the Islanders in their road opener last night. It will be interesting to see how this team progresses throughout the season.

Turd in Detroit last night. Shut down by Jonas Gustavson. Going to have to score to win and I'm not sure where that scoring is going to come from.

Horton would help if he were in the lineup.

Gustavsson can be decent if he's able to see the puck. He has issues when people crash the crease because so much of his game revolves around the puck hitting him since he's so big. Detroit is playing defense like they haven't since Rafalski retired as well.

Sooooo...the Columbus Blue Jackets pretty much suck again this season. 3-0 early in the second period to the Habs. Just gave up a shorty. This team really looks like shit. I know it's early, but Jesus Christmas play with a heartbeat.

It's 3-2 now at the end of two.

There's are lot of new parts and they are facing new teams right now while they are still short handed a bit without Horton. You don't have to hit the panic button so far, they've only really been uncompetitive on one game.
