Columbus Blue Jackets (Official Thread)

Jarmo is the fucking man. They couldn't have done better for a GM.

Just wait, he's only be on the job for less than a year. When he gets his system, scouting and coaches all in place throughout the CBJ system, it will look entirely different than it has for the past decade.

Dare I say, they may look similar to the Red Wings in the 90's? I may be getting ahead of myself.

This is an interesting site (below), even with Bobrovsky's new contract and Gaborik making $7.5M; the Blue Jackets are still $9.591M under the salary cap for the upcoming season. However, this is with only 19 roster players. They still need to sign 4 more (including another goalie) to get to 23.

FWIW, here is a site that explains how the salary cap is determined: http://www.theglobeandmail.com/spor...lary-cap-could-hit-90-million/article7029575/

Looking at that sheet...they are probably paying too much for Umby, and I think resigning Vinny would be a good idea....after that, there isn't a lot in the non-roster pool that they need to worry about saving if they don't want or need too....

maybe the late 80s, but they are lacking the bonafide homegrown superstar like Yzerman was to the Wings.

by the time the 90s swung around, the Wings were basically competing for a Cup every year (they were the 1-seed in the West in 1992 and 1995 before winning one in 1997). They haven't missed the playoffs since 1990 - an odd non-coincidence of this is they drafted Lidstrom in 1989.

The CBJ are doing it right, they have found their goalie, they have 3.5 solid d-men and with Gaborik, they have an offensive weapon that can score a whole bunch of ways.

I'd say they are looking more like an early 2000s copy of the Anaheim Ducks than the late 80s Red Wings right at the moment, but as these kids come up through the system and as the system is established, we'll see what comes of it. REmember with Detroit, it's not just the 1st rounders who contribute, it's the Zetterbergs/Datsyuks/Franzens/Lidstroms who are all 2nd round and below who end up becoming all-stars and in Lidstrom and maybe Datsyuk's cases, HOFers.

Lots of speculation that Nathan Horton visited the Jackets today. He'd be a nice get, they need more offense and he would bring some of that.

Unless they are going to amnesty someone making some serious money (Umby?) - I doubt they can afford Horton.

But watch Jarmo pull a rabbit out of his hat.

And it would only cost the Blue Jackets $12.267M to buy him out. :yow1:

He's 31 so 2/3( $4.6M x 4 years remaining on his contract) = $12.267M

Teams get two amnesty buyouts as part of the new agreement with the NHLPA. While it would cost the organization some of that money, it wouldn't count on the cap:

The players bought out will still receive two-thirds of what?s left on their contract, but those costs will not count towards the salary cap. However, they will still count towards the players? share of hockey-related revenues.

Umby is seriously overpaid for his role on this team.

Any way the Jackets would try to restructure Umby's contract since cutting him loose is likely out of the question?

I'm sure they could, but I doubt Umby's agent would let him do it.

If they were to extend it 2-3 years at $1Million per, that would take the cap hit down (since that's an average anyway) to the point where it would make sense though....

Jackets sign Nathan Horton... Love what they're putting together

EDIT: Lori Schmidt, quoted a fake report, not yet

Hopefully soon though

Heard the Jackets were extending the offer today. Also heard that were looking to poach a teammate of his.
