Coaching changes: coaches hired and fired, comings and goings

If you had a choice between Pitt and Tempe, and you were offered the latter after a mediocre season at the former - which would you take?

I was surprised they hired him - I guess they figured the Ray Graham injury really hurt Pitt this year, and that they wouldn't be able to hit a 'home run' with their hire after they missed out on Sumlin.

If the Pitt administration doesn't place their first post-Graham phone call to Sal Sunseri, they are out of their minds...

Pitt Administration's FIRST phone call should be to Steve Pederson, telling him to start packing. The guy is not good at hiring football coaches.

Also a native of Arkansas and its where his family and friends live. Not everything points to NCAA sanctions.

It isn't unheard of for coaches to simply want to be closer to home and to make the requisite decisions to do so. Certainly Buckeye fans understand this point.

Was just going to say this.

Plus, it allows him to learn the ins and outs of being a head coach at the FBS level out of the spotlight that a BCS job would have. Supposedly Arkansas is the job he really wants, so if Petrino were to leave or not stick around when his contract is up (Yes, I know about his ridiculous buyout but in 5 or so years it's not so ridiculous) he's in great position.

Takes a pay cut (apparently 500k) to go to a Sun Belt team. Hmm....

I would have assumed that he could have snagged at least a bit higher profile job somewhere rather than take a pay cut. Must have some baggage that he needs to get rid of for a few seasons at Arkansas State.

Speaking of baggage, wasn't Malzahn also part of that mess with Houston Nutt and the Mitch Mustain package deal at Arkansas?

Not for Penn State, but for a perennial lower-tier school such as an Indiana (not specifically Indiana, b/c it's a lateral move), I always thought they should look at someone like the Navy head coach (Triple Option coach).

http://www.hometownannapolis.com/ne...-agent-deny-Niumatalolo-Penn-State-rumor.html

FootballScoop.com, a website that reports on college football coaching moves, posted yesterday that Penn State athletic officials had contacted Navy head coach Ken Niumatalolo about that school's coaching vacancy. No sources were cited and there was no corroboration of the report, which Niumatalolo denied.

Nutt was the mess, not Malzahn.

As to other posters suggesting that Malzahn wants the Arky job...that may be true, but I honestly doubt that Petrino is going anywhere anytime soon. I think both Arky and Petrino are quite happy, I doubt Petrino goes anywhere for quite a while. And I suspect that Malzahn knows this.

I can't fathom why Malzahn took this job as other opportunities surely were available to him.

I watched a 30 Rock episode the other day where Jack Donaghy was expecting to be appointed CEO of the company so he hired a private investigator to find out the skeletons in his closet. The PI found out that Jack collected cookie jars.

Wonder if Gus collects cookie jars.

Isn't Malzahn the guy with the batshit crazy wife? There's your baggage. No way she can handle the media around be a coach's wife at any school that has any kind of local media following. Her dumb ass will get him run out of any town with a daily newspaper and a part-time sports reporter.

Malzahn leaving looks suspicious. Maybe he knows the hammer is coming? Ala USC rats deserting the ship.
I think that ship has sailed. I think it's more him wanting to break into being a HC, plus the pressure of a down season on the plains...plus, Cam Newton isn't walking back through that door.

His success as an OC has come with superstars. At Arky, he had the DMac/F. Jones/Hillis backfield...then Cam at Auburn. Auburn will struggle to outrecruit bammer, UGA, LSU, and UF in the south. Now, after their '10 season, Auburn fan's expectations have probably grown pretty unreasonable. Good time to cut bait. He can get his foot in the door and cut his teeth at Arky State, then move on to a bigger job in a couple of years.
