Coaching changes: coaches hired and fired, comings and goings

I can understand passing on the Vandy job. Turning around a perennial SEC doormat is a tough task. But turning down Maryland and then taking the Arky State gig is more confusing. Maryland had been competitive in the ACC, should be able to pull some talent, and is in a conference where you can vault to the top quickly, but isn't exactly a high profile job either, so there's not a ton of pressure to win.

I think Malzhan might have just been striking while the iron was still lukewarm. Add in going home and his crazy ass wife and that move is somewhat understandable.

The Graham to ASU move really surprises me. That guy sounds like a douchenozzle supreme.

I know, which it makes it all the more confusing, great fit down in Pittsburg.

Pitt has a 'coaching carousel' all by themselves. Pitt head football coaches since December of last year:

12-07-10 Dave Wannstedt fired

12-16-10 Michael Haywood hired (fired on 01-01-11 after felony domestic violence charge)

01-08-11 Phil Bennett was the interim head coach in the BBVA Compass bowl win over Ky

01-10-11 Todd Graham hired (quits on 12-13-11 to go to Ariz St, two weeks after referring to his assistants that left to work for RichRod at Arizona as "nothing but mercenaries", and Graham informs the team via text message)

01-07-12 Keith Patterson will coach the team in the BBVA Compass Bowl vs. SMU

01-??-12 Pitt will announce their 6th head coach in 13 months

Pitt fans wonder aloud why they can't return to their glory years of three decades ago. I have an idea...

Johnny Majors 73-76 / 93-96
Jackie Sherrill 77-81
Foge Fazio 82-85
Mike Gottfried 86-89
Paul Hackett 89-92
Sal Sunseri 1992
Walt Harris 97-04
Wannstache 05-10
Bennett 2010
Haywood 15 Days in 2010
Graham 2011
Patterson 2011
TBD 2012

This will be their 13th head coach (well, 11th, Majors had two tenures) in the past 39 years, or one every 3 years. That's insane.

The longest tenure in that span was Walt Harris

Malzahn to Arky State shouldn't be too big of a shock. Arky State has loads of talent in the Sun Belt, they went 8-0 in conference and 10-2 overall. They return a vast amount of their starters, including Aplin at QB.

More importantly, he has toooons of in-roads in-state due to his HS coaching career coming in Arkansas. He should be able to recruit extremely well, a chance to go back home, a great position to gain HC experience with a team that puts him in great position to further his resume and be able to hook a big fish 2-3 years down the road. Perfect situation for a first time college HC.

Hilarious discussion in Pittsburgh Post-Gazette article on Todd Graham's "Midnight Run" from Pitt:

5 p.m. Tuesday: Graham talks to athletic director Steve Pederson on the phone and informs him he is considering the Arizona State job. Pederson said he doesn't have permission to talk to Arizona State. The conversation ends.

11 p.m. Tuesday: After hours and hours of trying to reach Graham to no avail, Pitt sends a senior administrator to Graham's house to try and make contact. Graham tells administrator "get off my porch" and slams door.

Re: In fact, according to sources, the school already is reaching out to candidates, including Ohio State defensive coordinator Luke Fickell, who served as the interim coach of the Buckeyes this season, Iowa State coach Paul Rhoads, Florida State defensive coordinator Mark Stoops, Wisconsin offensive coordinator Paul Chryst, Northern Illinois coach Dave Doeren and former Illinois and Florida coach Ron Zook.

That comes as a surprise to me: however, (if he actually gets an offer from Pitt) it could be a good career opportunity for Fickell.

With the exception of Majors (pre 85 scholarship time where he would literally bring in 50-60 recruits/year) and Sherrill (notorious cheater), which was three decades ago, that job is where careers go to die.

Fickell's best career move is staying right where he is and watching UM for at least the next three years.
