If you can’t beat ’em, join ’em.

According to multiple reports, former Michigan Defensive Line coach Greg Mattison will switch sidelines for The Game this year, after accepting a role as the Defensive Coordinator at Ohio State.

Mattison spent four years working as a Defensive Coordinator under Brady Hoke at Michigan from 2011-2014, and then switched to Defensive Line coach for the last four seasons under Jim Harbaugh.

Adding Mattison accomplishes two things for Day. First, it gives him a veteran assistant with a proven track record of developing high-level talent in the conference. Second, it also takes all of that away from his biggest rival.

Mattison is one of the few Michigan coaches I've actually always respected, his defense was probably the only thing keeping them competitive in the Hoke years.

That said - interesting that Harbaugh / Brown elected not to bring him back. I wonder if they blame him for their late-season defensive struggles. Doesn't matter now, though - hopefully a change of scenery is what was needed.

Mattison's always struck me as one of those guys who stresses fundamentals over 'flash', which I for one am VERY happy to welcome to our defense.

I love this hire for two reasons:
1) Schiano is gone. He inheritted a good if not great D and has gone from bad to shit in the subsequent 2 years. He didn't maintain it or improve it, it went down the drain. The floor was set so there can realistically only be upside here whether or not it was the best DC available. It's has to be an upgrade.

2) scum apparently tried to keep him with more money. He helped them, they wanted him, we got him. Scum takes the L here, at least for the moment.

Reading that the non-renewal story was not entirely accurate... Was more of a "yeah... you don't need to worry about renewing that contract..." kind of thing. Makes for an easy out for him.

Edit: And I'm with you on your opinion of Mattison. It would be very hard for them to pin the end of season struggles on him... it's not like he was the DC or anything. Only the DL coach. The struggles at the end of the season are squarely planted on the shoulders of Hairball, Brown and Pep... and whoever the eff it was who thought it a good idea to put #28 on the field during the game. Whoever that was, I hope they keep him and we should co-fund his contract.

I will withhold judgement until I see what he puts on the field. I know he improved the skunks defense when he was hired by the Freakshow. He has that going for him.

Day would be hard pressed to fill out a staff that could put a worse product on the field than what we saw this year. We knew the defensive staff needed an overhaul. Day has certainly overhauled it.

I'm fine with it. Mattison is objectively one of the best defensive coaches in the conference, and has been since he returned in 2011.
