Co-DC Greg Mattison (Official Thread)

Offensive intel (even though we probably don't need it), maybe upcoming changes to the staff ?? Maybe how they prepare for us ?? Recruiting strategies ?? I'm not sure if that impacts the hiring anyway, I'm just taking a very wild guess anyway.

It's like getting a defector from North Korea..."dear leader is fucking nuts!" will be about the extent of it.

Yeah now that you mention it, we should probably start with getting Mattison a couple therapy sessions before he starts coaching, who knows what kind of madness the guy went through up north. Between surprise pajama parties, and LSD induced screaming about having it better than anyone, I don't know who'd make it out of there in one piece.

You bring the DC on first so he can be involved in the selection of the rest of the D staff. IMO he is coming in to groom the next DC. We will find out who that is shortly.

I was very unimpressed with the way that Urban Meyer left Florida, at the time. He very much appeared unwilling to accept a tough season or two ahead, almost like he was unwilling to be anything but the golden boy. I felt that I lost a lot of respect for him and didn't want him to coach the Buckeyes.

However, since then, the story has unfolded. The health problems that he mentioned, the inability to achieve balance in his life: these are things that can surely cause one to die well before their time.

I see him in a more balanced way now. A coach who has delivered big time and quickly, but perhaps one who will be less likely to do so unless he has a very competent supporting cast that allows him to delegate.

I hear ubet about Meyer not leaving Florida for an Ohio State opening. Frankly, I believe this is and always has been his dream job and you have heard his wife and kids saying it has been his dream job since he was three years old. Look at his face. Look at their faces. These are genuinely happy folks, just like the BuckeyePlanet.

I don't think he will go anywhere and I think he will be hugely successful.

Finally, enough of this Herbstreit influence backstory. This was always his dream job and this job was always on the cards from his side. Think back to the Akron game and the off-air comment that he made in the box during a commercial: "Now, that's my quarterback."

It sure is. This is gonna be a lot of fun to watch.

There was a lot of negativity about Urban Meyer. Mattison from TSUN--the enemy--I don't like. However, I see a guy who has friends in Columbus, who has worked for a very odd man for the last few years. I'm gonna watch Day assemble what he thinks he needs and then watch how it plays out. So, welcome Coach Mattison.

Oh, and please take our special welcoming shower before you enter the program. You need to get the crap off of more than your shoes.

If you look at this as a straight up replacement for Schiano, it's fine. Mattison is a great defensive mind and recruiter, even at 70. Is he a big upgrade over Schiano? Don't know. But he did take the worst defense in scUM history and made them one of the best in the country in year one. I get the feeling his job is to recruit well and groom Hafley, so it makes sense. With the added benefit of large quantities of butthurt from the dfbia.

I love the hire personally, excellent defensive mind and an outstanding recruiter. I would assume he takes over coaching the LB's with Davis' imminent departure and he has plenty of experience with coaching that position. And as MD said above, he will only be here for 2-3 years and it would be excellent to have his expertise in grooming a younger coach to take over. As for the *ichigan history, I don't give a shit about that either, I just see it as taking away from them. Welcome to Columbus Greg.

I still believe Day is going to bring in a LB coach. I have to think Mattison will be the same as Schiano, no position responsibilities, just co-DC.

I think Washington accepts the LB coaching job. So here’s what I see.

Larry Johnson - AHC/DL
Al Washington - LB
Greg Mattison - Co-DC
Jeff Hafley - Co-DC/CB
Bill Busch ? - Safeties

I love all of that, but wonder if Hafley would coach Safeties
