Co-DC Greg Mattison (Official Thread)

I am not on board with this thought that DC's can't run or understand 1 high vs 2 high safeties etc. A college DC understands every single defense, coverage, who has what read, gap, lane, etc. It isn't like because one DC happens to run Cover 4 where he is now that he does not understand or know how to run Cover 2. Sure they have their preferences, hence they run what they run, but to think Freeman or someone else doesn't know how to run Cover 1 is not accurate. All DC's line up multiple ways and run multiple coverages from different formations. It isn't brain surgery, it is defense.

i tend to agree with this, although DC’s are always going to have preferences on what they like, and hence recruit for the system they prefer.

I think the common theme of most great DC’s is ability to disguise what you are in, which was the source of so much frustration last year. Our secondary got torched bc of it. Whether we blame it on Covid, simplicity in game planning, etc., it needs to be addressed and fixed. We have too much talent to be finishing in the bottom 10% in passing yards allowed nationally. That’s outrageous for Ohio State.

Of course they can run it, but the adjustments and tweaks are where it gets muddy. If an offense starts to gash you, you have to know how to adjust. Not everybody knows the intricacies to each defense. Lining up with one safety all game tells the offense what your plan is. How do you adjust to take away what they want to do. It’s about expertise. The same reason Urban doesn’t line up in I-formation. Could he coach it? Probably. But that’s not what he knows best.

I’d like to see the NCAA downsize the #’s on a coaching staff.

It’s ridiculous.
staff (coordinators, on field coaches, folks that can do off campus recruiting is what i mean by staff) size isn’t that bad.. its the analyst where the difference is... Bama seems to have like 35 analyst who were former HCs and dont need the money so they take $50k a year to be around saban and help him....
