Co-DC Greg Mattison (Official Thread)

Could've done this before Freeman went to ND.

Honestly, it's felt like they haven't tried very hard to pull him here. Maybe that's due to him having less experience in 2019 when Day took over, or not running the scheme Day wants to. Maybe they have and it's not well known, just never seems to be any smoke about it.

Could be that Day is looking for something with more P5 or NFL experience. Gene and Day need to go hard after Todd Bowles and Dennis Allen as Co-DCs.

Thank you, Coach Mattison, for your time at Ohio State and especially for kicking Harbaugh and Michigan square in the balls on your way out the door.

Regarding replacement, if Day continues to insist on running that single high safety defense, I don’t think Freeman or Raymond would be particularly great hires as they don’t know the system.

He either needs to let Coombs run what he wants (and then, please, bring in Raymond and Elias Ricks with him), or hire someone who knows the scheme he prefers to call plays and make adjustments during games.

Mattison was a great hire for Day, as he got accilmated into his new role as HC. A defensive coach with a wealth of knowledge who provided stability to the staff.

I'm excited to see who they bring on in his replacement. One, I doubt this is a surprise, so my guess is they likely have somebody in mind. Secondarily, now that Day has his feet under him, I could see this hire going multiple directions. Mattison was not a heavy recruiter...he was a game-planner and developer of talent. Wouldn't be surprised if new hire is more of an up and coming defensive mind, that can also add on the recruiting trail. That said, the recruitng formula seems to be working well, so perhaps they stick to a more veteran coach, who kind of takes over the Mattison role.

It will be fun to follow.
