Co-DC Greg Mattison (Official Thread)

Looking over the timeline, Mattison was sole DC from 2011-2014. Durkin was hired as DC for 2015 and Mattison demoted to DL, then one year into a three year extension. Durkin left after one year for the Maryland job and Don Brown was hired Dec 21, 2015. Mattison was offered a two year extension which he signed Feb 17, 2017 to continue as DL coach.

So he is presently still under contract for another five weeks, but denies having been offered another extension.

If I'm him I view my loyalty being repaid with diminishing roles and diminishing extensions not commensurate to the product I put on the field given the level of difficulty regarding the job I walked into.

Dude was a damn miracle worker given what he inherited from Rich Rod's recruiting classes.

I still believe Day is going to bring in a LB coach. I have to think Mattison will be the same as Schiano, no position responsibilities, just co-DC.

I think Washington accepts the LB coaching job. So here’s what I see.

Larry Johnson - AHC/DL
Al Washington - LB
Greg Mattison - Co-DC
Jeff Hafley - Co-DC/CB
Bill Busch ? - Safeties

I would be good with Washington as the LB position coach, but would still love Marcus Freeman...I think he could learn from the senior coaches here and be groomed for the DC position pretty quickly. But I will defer to the staff on that one, either scenario sound great to me.

Mattison is one of the few Michigan coaches I've actually always respected, his defense was probably the only thing keeping them competitive in the Hoke years.

That said - interesting that Harbaugh / Brown elected not to bring him back. I wonder if they blame him for their late-season defensive struggles. Doesn't matter now, though - hopefully a change of scenery is what was needed.

Mattison's always struck me as one of those guys who stresses fundamentals over 'flash', which I for one am VERY happy to welcome to our defense.

Amen. I always despise the state up north, but I always respected Mattison and the way he coached and went about his business. I really think if he applies his style of coaching to the talent we have, we are going to have a hell of a good defense.
