Co-DC Greg Mattison (Official Thread)

This smells Beck-ish...
You were cackling and warning us when we opened that white elephant gift.

Ryan just strolled into Harbaugh's office during negotiations and not only stole his high level DL coach (hint: OSU already has a legend there) but also stole his up and coming star LB coach (who happens to be an Ohio guy, OSU legacy, rock star recruiter and african american).

Mattison is clearly on-board as a mentor to the 49ers coach hire.

I wouldn’t go that far. I’m just speaking in terms of the fact that they could’ve gone after a promising young DC, and paid him enough to keep him around for more than two years.
There is no such promise. The witchcraft at Clemson is unusual. Also, the offer there is: hey, come play with the only Bama level talent in the conference, oh and you get 2-5 superstars on the DL to play with. Think hard before you bolt to Rutgers or Purdue.
Instead, they went after a guy nearly 70 years old.

The other hires seem fine, but this one was a head scratcher.
I think it's a head scratcher if he's a long term play.

Mattison gives support for a culture change/radical approach change on defense, he helps gut the TSUN defensive coaching staff at a time they thought they could use that strength against a new Ohio State coach, and he brings a deep experience level to a relatively young, rising starts coaching staff. If your number 1 objective is to beat TSUN, then this hire makes one hell of a lot of sense.

Ryan Day doesn't have the same amount of rope Urban Meyer had. He has the first 2-3 years to win and win big.

The risk/reward profile of an unproven DC is all wrong for him.

Mattison, on the other hand, makes all the sense in the world for the next 2-3 years, especially in the context of the other hires.

To me it looks like Gene and Urban gave Ryan Day the checkbook he needed to go build a security blanket defensive staff for himself. This puts his fate as firmly in his own hands with the offense as he could possibly hope for. From the perspective of a person who runs an organization, I love to see people who are excellent at putting their talent in a place to succeed. Kudos to Gene Smith and Urban Meyer here imo.

Huh? When the F was that? I don't remember that at all. Not one bit. Did that happen before I was born?

I was bartending the Best in the West flair competition, and the game was on the big screen right behind my head, so luckily I didn't actually see much of it. However, I was wearing a jersey, so everyone who bought a drink from me that night (a LOT) felt compelled to talk shit to me.

When my shift was finally over, I went to the bar across the street. Half my coworkers were there. They had a pitcher of Fat Tire and an entire beer glass of Jager waiting for me.

Made a ton of money that night, but man it sucked. Got completely hammered, and was over it before I even got home.

Some time in the third quarter someone asked what I thought. I said, "man, whenever Tressel leaves, I want THAT guy to be the coach."

I got my wish.

Thanks, coach.
