Buckeye Offensive Coordinator Discussion (merged)

OK...How about a show of hands...Who here believes someday we're going to just blow through the Big Ten+1, smoking every team in our path?...Anyone?...Just you in the back...Ok...You're a moron.

After a quick perusal of the data, since 1950, it's NEVER happened. There has not been one year where there hasn't been at least one close, defensive type game. It's time for some reality here. We smoked Miami, SDSU and Iowa. Texas and Penn State are better than those teams. To think we are going to be able to just destroy every opponent on our schedule is so unrealistic is ridiculous. Now, I understand many of you are not talking about "smoking" everybody. I'm not trying to insult your intelligence here. But I am saying that this idea that we are going to just waltz through our schedule in any one given year is pie in the sky, no matter how much talent we think we have. PSU needed to play a perfect game to beat us...They did. Going into that game I thought we had enough talent that we could've recovered from two major mistakes and still won. We couldn't. Now, we have won Big Ten and Nat'l Titles in the past. How did we accomplish that? Great defense and a running game. That's how it's done. If it's not exciting enough for some of you, well, I'm sorry. But there is no reason to believe that anything positive will come from a complete change in offensive philosophy. Those of you poking around the edges, calling for this coach or that coach to be let go or promoted and so forth, that's fine. I have no particular quarrels with that. I do have problems with the idea that becoming some kind of "fun-n-gun" type of offense will result in the success we are all hoping for. It ain't going to happen. JMO.

There really should've been no reason why we couldn't punch at least one TD out of those first-half three turnovers Texas gave us in their territory. And drive a little deeper into Texas territory so that Huston's 50-yard attempt was from 40 yards (and thus good) instead. That's not counting the Hamby dropped TD. Add those up (which is very reasonable) and we put up 36 points on Texas. So yeah, Texas is better than Miami, SDSU, and Iowa, but that's not an excuse for the chances we blew.

Dunno how many of you saw his Q&A after todays practice (transcripts on Bucknuts) but he was getting rather pissed off! Its good to see that he is showing emotion and a lil 'tude after a game that we could have won. He brought up to the reporters that "He knows more football than they do", that noone brings up OSU is the best team concerning turnover margin, and that we also are the top team in the Big Ten with time of posession.

I like the attitude, but what exactly did he say about turnover margin? We are 84th at -.40

Saw31 said "and so forth" .. is he from the JT household?

Ya like that?

I'd like to interject a little more reality here. In our 116 years of playing football, we've had a grand total of 10 unbeaten seasons. This includes our first season where we went 1-0 and seasons with a tie (I gave us the OT win :) ). That means we should expect an unbeaten season about once a decade or every 11.6 years. We just went undefeated in 2002. I would really like to see the expectations kept in check a little. As has been said, there is still a chance for a great season, unless the expectations are so high that 10-2 is no longer a great season (beating scUM is always a great season in my book). If we are going to start jumping off the bridge every time we don't go undefeated, there isn't going to be a lot of us left to enjoy that undefeated season of 2013...

Oh believe me, I agree...There are probably ten plays we could point to in that game where we could've grabbed the W. But dropped passes, penalties, not tackling the guy in the endzone, Smith getting sacked, Schlegal not making the tackle on VY...none of those has anything to do with coaching IMO.

Not at home, so Im not able to copy and paste the article. Its a free Q&A though on Bucknuts.

He pretty much said that hes getting tired of hearing about our 3-2 record, our offense that is ranked last, and said that he doesnt knwo why noone brings up good things like our Offense being #1 in time of posession and other things that we have done good offensively.

JWins, maybe you could post it on here for me.

someone on 1460 mocked the TOP stat, saying that when your defense is tops in 3 and outs, you are probably going to have the ball an awful long time. We don't have the highest TOP b/c we have the ball the most as much as b/c tressel calls runs until he is blue in the face.

TOP is great when you have a lead. But it doesn't do us much good vs PSU.

Because we are 3-2 with two tough losses that could/should have been victories. Had we won those two games the stats would be very close to what they are now but we would be 5-0.

Surely JT is smart enough to recognize this fact.

I don't believe it will happen. The boosters and alumni are already pushing for a change and Smith might oblige to speak to JT depending on the results this year. However, I don't get the feeling that JT will acquiesce. He just seems too stubborn. And even if he agreed, he'll agree to simply remove himself from the current offensive plan and still direct JJD.

our woeful offense

maybe it is not fair to compare what other teams have done against common opponents but here goes....points put up against penn st so far this year. south florida (13), cincinnati (24), northwestern (29), minnesota (14) OSU (10). except for central michigan EVERYBODY scored more points against psu than we did and i know that their defense was probably a little jacked up for that game :) but come on. is our offense seriously worse than all of these teams. the numbers would seem to indicate that and thats what sticks in my gut. how in gods name can our defense be so good and our offense be so miserable. it just shouldnt be possible :(
