Game Thread BCS Championship Game, tOSU vs. Florida - Jan 8th

Man, I don't ever remember being so shocked and disapointed at the same time. I've never seen tOSU get blown out like this, and play this horrible.

I was there for the weekend and then went to the game, and I can't tell you that i've ever seen an environment more electric for Ohio State. The entire town was being taken over by Buckeyes, and the fan support was incredible. I don't know who was quarterbacking our team last night, and someone please let me know if Troy Smith is found wherever he is being held up at. Tressel got completely outcoached, which scares the hell out of me, and Florida played like a team that had something to prove.

We were completely flat, while Florida played the game of their lives. We didn't deserve to win that game. Congrats to Florida.

nicely put bro

Hey Buckeyes,

Please don't think of every single Gator fan out there as an asshole. I know it is hard to think that there are good Florida fans out there because I'm sure there are a ton of them on here trashing your team, but not all of them are like that. When the Swamp fills up on a Saturday night, I assure you that it is not 93,000 drunk, redneck, inbred jerks. For the most part, I would say that we have good fans; certainly not the worst. One of Georgia's fans killed a Florida student last year. Does that mean all Georgia fans are killers? No. So please don't think badly of the Gator Nation because of a few bad experiences.

Also, your band kicks ass. I've never watched them but that is really cool how they spell out "O-H-I-O" in script and weave in between each other.

we all know this already but props to you for going out of your way to reassure the idea of it. i do the same things and im glad you do the same. ohio state has the same issue with classless and drunken bandwagon fans but alot of major universities do sadly. luckily most of BP consists of TRUE fans and thats how we like to keep it. im glad to see that you are the same with your gators. there was a lot of trash talking going on and to an extent its all crazy with conferences, speed, etc but while we lost the game it was nice to look back after the game at troy smith going out on a personal agenda to almost pass the torch of MVP honors for the game and congratulate leak on a game played extraordinarily well. aside from all the media and everything else the two teams themselves really defines how the game should be played and im glad you are a fan of class of the gators and welcome to BP.

Some observations:

1). It's no coincidence that only one team with more a recent national title than the opponent has gone on to win the BCS national championship game.
Tennessee beat a FSU beat that had a NC in 93
Oklahoma then beat FSU
Miami beat a Nebraska team that had their last title in 95
Ohio State beat Miami
LSU beat OU
SC beat OU
Texas beat SC
and now Florida beats OSU

It wasn't that our players didn't want it, it was just that Florida players wanted it that much more.

2). Sexy offenses may get you to the national championship game, but it takes the team with the more physical defense to win it. Florida was simply more physical. Their DL was physical, their LBers were physical, and their DBs were physical. Our defense is very young and the offense has done a lot to put them in a position to succeed during the season, but it's apparent that we lack in some areas, especially at safety, to be a national champion caliber defense. Again, they are young, and they will have a chance to get there next season.

3). When the offense stalled, why not use Troy's feet? Our offense was being dominated by Miami as well in 2002, but Krenzel's feet allowed us to get some yards and more importantly control the time of possession. Lack of adjustments on our part.

4). Passive defensive playcalling all game long. Going into the game, we knew that if Leak had one weakness, it was his tendency to throw wild under pressure. Why were we sitting back in the zone and just rushing three, especially on third downs?

Also, Florida did not attempt to go long once in this game. Why the seven yard cushion given up by our DBs?

5). Can't blame everything on the OL. It's tough to pass protect when the QB holds on to the ball forever and when the team is in obvious passing situations. That's when the DEs just tee off on the tackles.

Despite the loss, our program is still a top five program and we will be back. It may take a couple of seasons and a couple more major wins to get the respect back nationally, but we will be back.

Still DAMNED PROUD to be a BUCKEYE!!!

I am down about the loss on Monday, but I'll be damned if I'm not still going to show my support to my Buckeyes! We had a great season and are a great team and there is no reason to hang our heads in shame. We have a lot to be happy about in the 2006 season, so just keep that in mind.

GO BUCKS!!!

every down i couldn't believe we would rush 3 and let them catch the ball in the middle of the field. everytime we brought four or five after leak he threw the ball in the stands. and we continued to rush 3 again and again and again until we were down 4 scores

You are totally right. I was at the 2002 championship. That was a special time. This year was a great year......the players provided us with a ton of great memories. Last night was bad, but it takes nothing away from what these kids did the weeks and months leading up to it. Thank you Guys for a great year and go bucks.

You don't pass for 316 yards and four touchdowns when you have Lamar Woodley and Alan Branch rushing in your face, Shawn Crable and David Harris stopping your run, and Jamar Adams, Willis Barringer, and Brandon Harrison covering your wideouts and not be able to call a blowout like this "luck," which most argue that it wasn't. Like some espn ****ysts say....the 51 days of off-time isn't an excuse but a reason..ive watched every game osu has played this season (except the michigan st.) and one thing that stood out to me about the florida game was the fact they seemed to have no intensity and willpower to take control of the game like they did in every regular season game (which they had to play two #2 teams, a fierce offense in iowa, and a great defense in penn state). if you refer back to the michigan game this season, it was either when smith threw the pick or fumbled (I forget) and hart ran it in for like 15 yards to close the lead by 7, on that ensuing osu drive there was 11 people in the osu huddle but only one was talking; smith (the commentators commented on this) You saw him take control and act as a leader for the team by the actions he took when he was talking, two plays later--a 50+ yard run for a touchdown....Unfortuantely you were never able to see someone take control of the team yesterday..almost as if they were mentally and physically drained from the wait..i do believe that there isn't any question that osu would have won had this game been played a week or two after the michigan game...

and I do believe the game would have been completely different had Tedd Ginn been playing this game..would have took defenders off of Gonzalez, Smith's primary target, and allowed a faster offense for OSU finding open recievers quickly like the Robenski kid during the Michigan game and avoiding some of those costly sacks. This could of provided more running lanes by spreading out the Florida secondary and provided momentum for the OSU defense to blitz in with more than three people--they wouldn't be losing by 21-- so they would heavily concentrate on keeping Leak on the ground, rather than focus everything on keeping Florida out of the endzone but still giving up three points on almost every drive. But whatever it's in the past...one thing i hate about college ball is there isnt any chance of a rematch...Smith will never get another chance to prove that he is in fact a better QB than Leak.

great season...loved every minute of it (except for the end). whats your picks for next year...im going to be rooting for usc and ohio state as usual but i like west virginia's chances as well. steve slayton reminds me of another warrick dunn (when he played for tampa) but stronger...and they are all really young so they could be dominant for the next couple of seasons. OSU will still do well next season, OSU still has a healthy group of quarterbacks that are good and could lead a successful team next year and hopefully ginn stays one more season (doubtful), the OSU defense is young and will get better. Bottom line: I can't wait for next year.

Revenge is a dish best served cold

I just realized that we came within 1 point (on the basketball side) of losing to Florida by 27 points in both basketball and football. Unlike the thought of losing to those other two major florida schools, I can't get too fired up about that humiliation coming at the expense of the Gators. And also unlike that jackass Jarrett from USC who was seen taunting scUM on two separate occasions, I did not see anything but class from UF players in the championship game and so my wish to get "even" is just that; a wish not a burning desire. That being said I do hope that sometimes in the near future we can return the favor and put a whoopen on them in basketball (this year?) and hopefully football too (another BCS match-up in the next few years)
