Ohio State Defense Not Looking for ‘Turnovers’ in 2018

Literally nothing kills an offense like turnovers. It ends a drive and can happen at any point on the field.

Turnovers change momentum like nothing else.

The Ohio State defense was spectacular in 2016, forcing 27 turnovers in 13 games.

They changed the momentum quite frequently that season.

The number of turnovers forced dropped to 24 in 14 games last year.

How do the Buckeyes get back to their 2016 measures?

“Well, you recruit Malik Hooker,” defensive coordinator Greg Schiano said, alluding to Hooker’s NCAA-leading seven interceptions two years ago.

“That’ll do it.”

Schiano was obviously joking, even if he was 100% correct.

There is still very much a plan in place to take the ball away from offenses this season, but Schiano isn’t planning on it happening via the “turnover.”

“We do put a lot of emphasis on, we call them ‘takeaways,’” he said on Thursday’s Urban Meyer radio show. “As a defense we don’t like to say ‘turnover.’ Turnover means they’re giving you something. And we believe we go take it.”

When you are watching football, all you may see if the ball leave the quarterback’s hand and then end up intercepted by a defender. While sometimes those are simply the product of a bad throw, according to Schiano there is so much more that goes on in creating a takeaway.

“A lot of it is not what people think about,” he explained. “It’s not the actual catching of the interception, but more important what happens 30 yards up the field where the defensive lineman is putting pressure on the quarterback. We call it ‘affecting the football.’ We’re going to have that hand up when we see him take his hand off the ball to throw it.

“If you can change the direction of the ball by just a little bit when it leaves his hands, 20 yards, 30 yards down the field, it could be a yard difference. And that’s the difference between an interception and a [pass break up], or a catch and a PBU. So we talk a lot about that, disrupting the football.”

Eliminating the amount of time a quarterback has to throw also rushes his decision making and possibly his mechanics. All of these are bad news for the accuracy needed to fit footballs into the diminutive windows that the Ohio State coverage may provide.

I thought Cornel was going to play DE this year? Haven't heard anything more on that.
He's in the depth Chart I think behind Bosa
From the presser on Monday:

  • Nick Bosa, Chase Young and Jonathon Cooper will lead the rotation at defensive end, "and then from there, we'll see, if Jashon Cornell or whoever else gets in the game."

So many highly rated players just waiting to emerge on the defensive side. Moreso than on offense given the depth at the skill positions.

Looking at the number of young guys who should get a lot of minutes on D is pretty interesting. Even guys who played some last year but will now get much more exposure. Lot's of opportunities for these young dudes to make a name for themselves.

Its crazy to think of the depth on this defense(it's very reminiscent of what Bama and Clemson have, hence why were all favorites to be in the CFP). There are so many former highly ranked prospects that are backups on this team! Cornell was a fromer #1 overall prospect, Hilliard a former 5star, Garret, Barrow and Pryor were high 4stars from football factories, Booker was a former 5star and Mr. Ohio, and the list could go on.

I don't remember Jashon Cornell ranked anywhere near that high. You sure?
