2018 tOSU Defense Discussion

The second long TD run of the 2nd half was Young’s fault more than anything else...absolutely no squeeze from the edge. He was nearly unblockable on the pass rush all game, but had several lapses vs the run.

For as bad as the safeties were, the most disappointing player for me was Browning. Maybe we can hope he’ll be a different player when he moves to the outside.

I think

1. we played vanilla and didn’t put anything interesting on tape

2. we were hurting at safety without Fuller out there making the calls

3. our LBs need to get better but are young

4. we were scoring so quickly the defense was on the field all game with hardly any rest (the ultra anti-Tresselball)

Given that #3 is an ongoing concern from all of last season, I think continuing questions about Bill Davis are justified... if we don’t improve there he should probably be on a hot seat.

I don’t think it’s time to panic at all. I think the defense gave up some big plays (obviously) but overall there is plenty to be positive about.
I agree with your statements, but my only question, with all the rotating of players, wouldn't that negate them being tired from being on the field so much?

He's still very young and has a lot to learn. He's over-hyped right now. Werner made a lot of plays and will just get more solid in his play. Harrrison? I don't remember him doing anything. We need Borlund and Fuller back!!!!!!!!!!!

No Jorden Fuller today really hurt the defense. And limited Tuf Borland also hurt the performance.
Get those two back and we're a different defense.
Agreed!
And after watching the game again, and focusing on the 4TDs that Oregon St scored, these players stuck out:
1st- Wint looked lost in coverage and got burned
2nd-Pryor got burned bad on a route
3rd- Jackson with a bad missed tackle and then Browning with a bad angle
4th- Wint again looking lost and got burnt taking a bad angle

This defense isn't that bad, when you get further away from the game and take the emotions out. We have arguably the best DL in the country, and I'm not just talking about the 1s, we have depth for days! We have very good LBs, but when you have a true frosh at MLB in his 1st game in front of 100,000+ fans, I'm sure some jitters were involved, I'll let that be Browning's excuse. Borland at MLB, and I can assure you, some of those plays wouldn't have been nearly as big. Werner is a man out there, and Harrison is also damn good, but both had to pick up the slack at times for Browning, who has the athleticism but was out there thinking too much(which frosh tend to do) instead of playing his game. Getting Fuller back at S, will also be a big help like many have said, and having Pryor battle Riep for the other S position would be my suggestion(though I'm not on the staff and don't see these kids daily). I think Okudah is a kid that will continue to get better with more reps. This is only the 2nd time that he's started a game, and the first start at the Shoe. I remember similar growing pains in early starts for Apple and Conley, and they turned out very well. He played too aggressive at times and drew penalties, but I rather him be aggressive than play timid, and having Sheffield and Arnette(who stepped up and impressed me big time) as guys to lean on will only help.
Wint is a special teams player at best. He tried, and he put in great effort, but I just don't see him being a guy that we can rely upon at a very important position where you're the last line of defense. If he's getting torched by the likes of Or. St, I shudder to think of what the skill position players for Ped St, TCU, MSU, etc would do to him. We knew when he got to OSU that he was an undersized LB in HS who was a run stopper, he never had to cover anyone in space, or cover RBs or TEs on routes, so converting him to a S was going to be a task.

All in all, game 1 is in the books, the jitters for most players is out, and they know what big time CFB feels like. I still feel like we are one of the top 4 teams in the nation, and certainly the best in the B1G. We may have some bumps in the road(don't we every season), but I think this defense can be lights out as the season progresses.

Agree with this. Pryor was the lesser of the two evils, but Wint just looked lost out there. On the second of the long TD runs, Wint was in perfect position to limit the run to a 15-yarder, but he took a poor angle and the RB turned it into an 80-yd TD. He did pretty much exactly what you don't want your safety to do. Awful.

I wasn't as high on any of the LBs as others in this thread seem to be. Oregon State got their RBs into the secondary way too often--that's on Werner, Browning and Harrison. I have a hard time giving the LB corps a higher grade than a C- (if not a D+).
Watching again and I felt good about Pryor to be honest. I still overall feel good about the backers too particularly Werner and the little bit we saw of Borland. Harrison and Browning had a few bumps but IMO still not bad.

Oregon State knew where to go to take advantage though and credit to them for continuously going after it. They were exploiting #1 and #23 all day and we did nothing to minimize their exposure. Then again when we are naming our score we can afford to let Wint/Okudah work through things. Maybe now we know why Okudah always seemed to be on the wrong side of the highlight films all off season lol...

I know Oregon State isn't great on defense but I believe they'll have a fine offense. Their coach comes from a productive sysyem, they have a veteran offensive line, and they have a returning RB that definately is talented. So I know I should have given them more credit going into yesterdays game. Now its my belief we gave up at least 2 scores too many (the back to back 80 yard runs) but OrSt may proove to be one of the better offenses we play.

I don't know man. They put 31 points on the defense with their backup QB.

I am having a hard time finding a positive in that.

Yeah i agree with everything here. Browning eas thinking too much but I liked what Harrison/Werner were doing. Once Borland is back everything shores up when it comes to limiting big plays.

We were missing our best player in the back 7 and we were missing our best LBer. Couple that with a new system and no film and thats not a great combo.

I wouldn't be shocked if we throw a shutout next week. We know their system and we will assumed have Fuller back

For sure theres no excuses on the two big runs and even on their first TD. Should've only given up 10-17 points.

My only point is they had some nice peices and a new system we didn't have film on. When you combine that with not having our 2 best back 7 players and its a perfect recipe for disaster.

Yeah I am rolling with anything positive from this point out because, well, what the hell else am I going to do?

One positive note; by the time they play TCU, OSU will have faced two P5 teams, albeit two terrible P5 teams but I think that's an edge over facing Southern and SMU (who got raped by the Mean Green of North Texas 23-46)
