2018 tOSU Defense Discussion

Maybe with the lack of depth at end we go with the occasional 3-4 look?

Good thought. I think that might work on occasion, especially when you have some big, rangy LB's like Browning, Harrison, Jones, etc. that could come off the edge. That being said, seems like we always discuss that every year and that look has not seemed to happen since we Thad Gibson and Nathan Williams manning the Viper position.

Yeah i doubt we do it but we honestly have the LB depth to pull it off. Imagine Landers at DT, Bosa/Young at 1 end and Jones at the other end.

Then OLB of Harrison/Werner and ILB of Tuf/Browning.

That's some big dudes at LB that may we well be rush ends anyways. It would really be a fun possibility on 3rd and medium.

It would allow us to rest one of Jones/Bosa/Young on any given down.

We are still way better off than 95% of college football teams. Our over all depth is outstanding. You can find "fill ins" on this team. LBs who can play some DE.

tOSU could play a 1-9-1 defense and be better than most teams. The question is: are we better off in a 4-3 or a 3-4. I believe 4-3 is the right answer, and so, apparently, does Greg Schiano.

Give Tommy Togiai a year in the weight room and my answer may change.

Could be. Cooper being considered a co-starter alongside Young seems a bit telling assuming I’m not reading too far into it. Sounds like at the very least he’ll be a viable situational rusher to spell Young on obvious passing downs.

Hope T Smith can continue his ascension; good to see him crack that 2-deep

We really need Tyreke/Friday to play well this year. They have got to take some snaps away from Bosa to keep him ready to go.

OHIO STATE COACHES SHOW RECAP: POSITIONAL UPDATES, NEW COACHES, BREAKOUT FRESHMEN AND NEW NCAA RULES

With Urban Meyer suspended for the first three games of the season, Ryan Day and Greg Schiano filled in on Meyer's weekly coaches show on 97.1 The Fan to discuss all things Buckeye football with Paul Keels and Jim Lachey.

GREG SCHIANO ON THE DEFENSE

ON THE DEFENSIVE LINE:
  • "There's going to be a good mix of guys we're used to seeing and some new guys."
  • He says Tyler Friday, Tommy Togiai, Haskell Garrett and Tyreke Smith will all play.
  • "The more we can roll our guys through, the better we'll be in the fourth quarter."
  • Said he thinks they're going to give Nick Bosa a few extra snaps this year.
ON THE LINEBACKERS:
  • It's a deep group, but not a very experience one.
  • Tuf Borland is the leader of the group.
  • Malik Harrison is "just a gigantic man" who's only gotten better.
  • Baron Browning is "one of the most highly recruited guys we've had around here."
  • Dante Booker is available and "getting healthy."
  • They're going to try to regularly rotate linebackers.
ON THE SAFETIES:
  • Jordan Fuller is the leader.
  • Jahsen Wint and Isaiah Pryor are both competing for the top spot opposite of him.
  • Amir Riep and Brenden White are coming along too.
  • "What you're going to see is you're going to see all of them play."
ON TURNOVERS AND DEFENSIVE TOUCHDOWNS
  • "We do put a lot of emphasis on what we call takeaways."
  • He said it's not just the actual interception or a turnover, but an entire defense disrupting the play.
  • There are a whole bunch of opportunities we teach them to look for.
ON NICK BOSA:
  • "He's worked incredibly hard with coach Johnson to really hone his skills."
  • "He's even better than he was last year – which is hard to imagine. He's a dominant football player."
  • "He's a rare talent."
  • They have to give him enough opportunities to go and make plays.

Great update. I am so freaking incredibly ready for kickoff. It's about that time when I am trying to get work done and have absolutely zero focus thinking about the game. Let's do this.

Things that I like: (1) that Tyreke Smith and Tyler Friday look good at DE, we need them ready; (2) Taron Vincent looks as advertised; and (3) all of the freshmen LBs (Mitchell, Pope and Gant) look good.
